Compare private Yunnan tours through Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, Shangri-La and southern Yunnan, with practical guidance on routes, cost, season and pace.
Yunnan private tours work best when the route is built around geography, altitude and the season rather than a long list of attractions. VERO TRIP is based in Kunming and plans private Yunnan journeys around your arrival city, available days, walking ability, hotel preferences and the experiences that matter most.

How Many Days Do You Need?
Five or six days is enough for two connected bases, such as Kunming and Dali or Lijiang and Shangri-La. It is not enough for a relaxed four-city circuit. Eight to ten days is the most useful range for a first private Yunnan tour because it supports three or four bases without turning every evening into a transfer. Twelve to fourteen days allows Shaxi, Yuanyang, Meili Snow Mountain or another distinct extension. The number printed on a train timetable is not the full travel time. Hotel checkout, the drive to the station, security, boarding, arrival and the final transfer can turn a short rail sector into half a travel day. Our Yunnan itinerary comparison explains what different trip lengths can realistically include.
Which Yunnan Route Fits You?
First-Time Visitors
Start with Kunming, Dali and Lijiang. Add Shangri-La only when the trip has enough time for the elevation change and at least two nights in the highlands. This route connects efficiently by rail and road while presenting three different cultural and landscape settings.
Families and Older Travellers
Choose fewer hotel changes, rooms with reliable vehicle access and a gentle rise in altitude. Dali often works well for a slower day; stone-paved old-town lanes, stairs and distant hotel entrances should be considered before accommodation is confirmed. See the family Yunnan planning guide for pacing choices.
Food, Tea and Coffee Travellers
Build meals and producer visits into the geography of the trip. Dali and Lijiang add market and community food traditions; Pu’er and Jingmai focus on tea; Baoshan and Lujiangba add coffee origins. A food route should include time to taste, talk and walk rather than treating every stop as a short demonstration.
Hikers and Photographers
Tiger Leaping Gorge, Haba, Meili Snow Mountain and Yuanyang require different seasons and physical preparation. Sunrise, trail access and mountain visibility cannot be guaranteed, so the route needs alternatives. Luggage transfer, elevation gain, walking surface and turnaround rules should be stated before an active trip is confirmed.

What Does a Private Yunnan Tour Usually Include?
A proposal may include private airport or station transfers, an English-speaking guide, a private vehicle for the stated days, selected admissions, hotels, domestic rail or air tickets and specified meals. The exact list matters more than the word “package.” Confirm room category, breakfast, guide language, vehicle size, luggage capacity, train class, attraction tickets and optional activities in writing. International flights, visas, insurance, personal purchases, gratuities and meals not named in the proposal are commonly separate. Retail visits, performances, cable cars and optional local activities should never be assumed; ask whether each one is included, optional or excluded.
How Much Does a Yunnan Private Tour Cost?
There is no reliable single price because private guide and vehicle costs are divided across the group while hotel and admission costs are charged per traveller. As an initial planning range, a comfortable private journey for two international travellers often falls around USD 180–350 per person per day when accommodation, local touring and the principal domestic arrangements are combined. Four travellers can often reduce the per-person figure because the guide and vehicle are shared. This range is not a quotation. Public holidays, boutique hotels, domestic flights, remote mountain roads, single rooms and specialist activities can increase the total. Read how Yunnan tour costs are calculated, then request a dated proposal based on the actual group and route.
Best Time for a Yunnan Tour
Yunnan stretches from tropical southern valleys to high mountains, so one “best season” does not fit every route. Spring and autumn are broadly comfortable for the classic northwest circuit. Summer is green and culturally active but brings rain; winter can suit Yuanyang, Xishuangbanna and clear highland days, although nights are colder.
March to May: spring weather, blossoms and comfortable city walking, with changing mountain conditions.
June to August: green landscapes, wild mushrooms and school-holiday demand, balanced against rain and possible road disruption.
September to November: often useful for highland scenery, trekking and clearer travel days.
December to February: water-filled Yuanyang terraces, warmer southern Yunnan and colder northwest nights.
High-speed rail connects Kunming, Dali, Lijiang and Shangri-La, but stations are generally outside the historic districts. Private road transfers remain useful for Shaxi, Tiger Leaping Gorge, villages, trailheads and mountain areas. Southern Yunnan can be reached by rail or air, then explored with local road transfers. Indicative train times are useful for initial planning: Kunming to Dali is commonly around two to three hours, Dali to Lijiang around two hours, and Lijiang to Shangri-La around one and a half hours. Schedules and station choices change, so the final route should use the train available on the actual date. Read the Yunnan train guide before placing sightseeing on a connection day.
Altitude, Walking and Accommodation
Kunming is around 1,900 metres, Dali around 2,000 metres, Lijiang around 2,400 metres and Shangri-La above 3,000 metres. Elevation affects people differently and no itinerary can guarantee that a traveller will feel well. A sensible route rises gradually, protects rest time and avoids combining a high-altitude arrival with a demanding activity. Accommodation should be selected for access as well as atmosphere. Pedestrian lanes, stone paving and vehicle restrictions can make a beautiful old-town property difficult with large luggage. The Yunnan accommodation guide compares character, quiet nights and transport access.
These itineraries are starting points. Their existing day-by-day schedules remain unchanged; a new proposal can be prepared when your dates or route require a materially different sequence.
Why Plan with a Kunming-Based Team?
A local planning team can compare the entire hotel-to-hotel journey, not only the headline train or driving time. It can also identify when a scenic stop creates backtracking, when an old-town hotel complicates luggage handling and when altitude requires a slower sequence. VERO TRIP’s office is in Kunming, giving the team a practical base for Yunnan route design and local coordination. Local presence does not remove every uncertainty. Weather, rail schedules, attraction rules and availability still need to be confirmed for the travel dates. A strong proposal distinguishes what is included, what remains optional and what may change.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best first Yunnan tour?
For most first-time visitors, Kunming, Dali and Lijiang form the most efficient base route. Add Shangri-La when eight to ten days and suitable health allow a slower rise in elevation.
Is eight days enough for Yunnan?
Eight days can cover the classic four-city route at a moderate pace when arrival and departure times cooperate. Travellers who prefer longer village stays should use eight days for three bases.
Can I travel around Yunnan by train?
Train travel works well on the main Kunming–Dali–Lijiang–Shangri-La corridor. Private road transport is still needed for Shaxi, Tiger Leaping Gorge, Yuanyang and many rural experiences.
Are Yunnan private tours suitable for children?
Yes, when hotel changes, walking and altitude are adjusted. Family rooms, child seats and dietary requirements should be confirmed before booking.
Can older travellers visit Shangri-La?
Age alone does not decide suitability, but the altitude is significant. Travellers with health concerns should seek personalised medical advice and keep the route flexible.
Do I need a private guide every day?
Not always. Some travellers use independent rail travel between cities and private support for remote roads, cultural interpretation or active days.
Can the route be changed after I choose a sample tour?
Yes, before services are reserved. Major route changes may require a newly prepared itinerary rather than altering the published sample schedule.
When should I book?
Book earlier for major Chinese holidays, summer family travel, spring blossom periods and limited boutique hotels. Normal dates usually allow more flexibility.
Can dietary requirements be arranged?
Many needs can be supported when they are stated clearly, but ingredients and kitchen practices must be confirmed with the actual restaurants and hotels.
How do I receive a price?
Send your dates, group size, arrival city, preferred hotel level and must-see places. A written proposal can then specify the current price, inclusions, exclusions and payment conditions.
