Choose your travel pace
The two-day trip starts locally in the terrace area. From Kunming, allow five days for comfortable transfers and time around the terraces. Seven to ten days add Jianshui and other Honghe stops. The seasonal eight-day route combines Luoping and Yuanyang with a full transfer day between regions.
When to visit
Flooded terraces and winter light attract photographers, while other seasons show planting, green rice or harvest colour. Water levels differ between fields. Clouds may hide sunrise, so extra nights improve flexibility without guaranteeing a particular view.
Arriving and choosing a base
Yuanyang’s terrace villages are reached by mountain roads. Rail gateways include Jianshui and Mengzi, followed by a prearranged road transfer. Choose Duoyishu for early viewpoint access or Shengcun for a practical village base; confirm heating and vehicle access before booking.
