China motorcycle tours need two separate plans: start in China with an agreed motorcycle, or enter through a border with your own foreign-registered bike. The journeys below start in Kunming or Lhasa. They are China-start riding proposals, not packages for bringing a motorcycle across an international border.
Choose the riding format before the route. Tell VeroTrip which motorcycle licence you hold, whether you need a bike in China, your recent riding experience and the riding days you want. A car driving permit does not qualify you to ride a motorcycle.

Fly & ride or bring your own motorcycle?
| Your plan | Where the ride starts | What must be confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Fly & ride: motorcycle arranged in China | Join in the Chinese starting city; arrive separately from the motorcycle. | A lawful vehicle arrangement, the correct Chinese motorcycle driving entitlement, insurance and route access. Rental availability is conditional. |
| Own motorcycle: international border entry | Enter at an agreed port with your foreign-registered motorcycle. | Personal entry, motorcycle customs entry, temporary vehicle documents, the matching driving permission and the accepted route. Ask for a separate border-entry proposal. |
The official temporary-permit guidance limits the locally rented-vehicle route described there to small cars, C1/C2. Do not rely on that car procedure for a rental motorcycle. Send your licence category and vehicle plan first; the relevant traffic authority must confirm the appropriate lawful arrangement before a motorcycle is handed over or a riding booking is accepted.
Motorcycle Itineraries and Starting Points
Both outlines suit experienced riders who want a supported mountain journey. They involve more than attractive roads: altitude, weather, road access and the rider’s ability to handle the chosen motorcycle determine whether the plan fits.
| Itinerary | Entry type and route | Who should enquire |
|---|---|---|
| 12-Day Kunming–Lhasa Motorcycle Tour | China-start / fly & ride proposal. Kunming → Dali → Lijiang → Shangri-La → eastern Tibet → Lhasa. | Experienced riders seeking a one-way journey. Discuss the demanding pace, extra rest time, motorcycle return and Tibet travel arrangements. |
| 10-Day Tibet Motorcycle Tour: Everest & Ali Northern Loop | China-start / fly & ride proposal. Start and finish in Lhasa; proposed Shigatse, Everest and northern-plateau stages. | Experienced riders considering a remote high-altitude loop. Restricted sections need an authorised alternative or a later date; no departure is guaranteed. |
For the Shigatse and Everest section: the National Immigration Administration notice of 28 August 2026 suspends issuance of electronic border-area permits for Shigatse and advises affected existing holders not to travel there. Confirm the rules applying to your documents and route with the responsible authorities before booking; choose a lawful alternative if a proposed section is unavailable.
Choose the ride around your experience
Use your recent riding, not your best riding years ago, to judge the fit. Share the bikes you currently ride, typical multi-day distances, experience with mountain descents and whether you travel with a pillion.
| Question | What to discuss with VeroTrip |
|---|---|
| Can I handle the motorcycle? | Model, seat height, loaded weight, luggage and a handover familiarisation session. Do not assume a preferred model is available. |
| How demanding is the programme? | Riding stages, rest days, overnight elevations, road surfaces and weather alternatives. Ask to shorten the route if the daily pace is too ambitious. |
| What happens if I stop riding? | Recovery arrangements, spare capacity in the support vehicle, luggage handling and the effect on the group itinerary. A support vehicle is not a medical evacuation guarantee. |
| Can a partner come without riding? | Request a specifically agreed passenger place or separate transport. Seat availability and price must be stated. |
| What equipment do I bring? | Suitable helmet, protective clothing, gloves, boots and weather layers. Confirm equipment rental separately rather than expecting it at arrival. |
Allow time to rest after arrival and discuss any additional acclimatisation before a plateau journey. Two nights in a starting city do not make every rider ready for a remote high-altitude route. Seek individual medical advice when needed and agree how the itinerary changes if a rider becomes unwell.
What the riding quotation should contain
Compare the actual service plan. “Supported motorcycle tour” should explain what the guide, motorcycle and support vehicle each provide.
| Item | Ask for a clear written answer |
|---|---|
| Motorcycle | Supplier, model or substitution policy, collection/return, condition record, deposit and damage responsibility. |
| Insurance | Vehicle cover and excess; personal travel cover that applies to the planned motorcycle activity and route. |
| Support | Guide language, support vehicle, mechanical assistance, luggage arrangements and emergency contacts. |
| Daily costs | Fuel, tolls, meals, accommodation, admissions and any riding equipment: which are included and which are paid locally? |
| Permissions and changes | Rider eligibility, Tibet or border-area permissions where applicable, route alternatives and cancellation terms. |
Border Entry With Your Own Motorcycle
Start this as a separate project, not a rental-bike booking. State your proposed entry and exit ports, dates, nationality, motorcycle registration country, make and model, engine size, licence categories and desired regions. If the motorcycle is not registered to you, explain the ownership arrangement early.
Personal immigration permission, motorcycle customs entry, temporary vehicle documents and the rider’s driving entitlement are separate parts of the plan. A country being visa-free for a traveller does not authorise that traveller’s motorcycle to cross any port.
The official temporary-entry vehicle checklist covers vehicle registration, customs entry evidence, applicable inspection documents and China motor liability insurance. The Beijing temporary driving-permission service guide also distinguishes drivers bringing their own foreign vehicle. Procedures at the chosen port and permission for the exact route must be confirmed before dates and services are accepted.
No border departure, guaranteed permit, motorcycle model or fixed price is offered by this enquiry section. Once the proposed entry and exit can be supported, the written plan can identify the services, documents, responsibilities and price.
Practical questions before choosing
Can a beginner join one of these routes?
The two published outlines are demanding journeys for experienced riders. They are not riding lessons. If mountain riding is new to you, tell us before choosing an itinerary and consider a different trip format.
Can we add a border crossing to the Kunming–Lhasa ride?
Do not assume so. The published route starts inside China, and a foreign motorcycle introduces different vehicle-entry and exit arrangements. Send the border plan separately before combining the journeys.
What if the route or motorcycle permission is unavailable?
Postpone the riding plan, choose an authorised route, or request a journey with a professional driver. Do not ride on an unsuitable licence or enter an unapproved road section.
Plan Your Motorcycle Tour
Send your dates, rider and passenger numbers, licence country and category, recent riding experience and whether you need a bike in China or will bring your own. Add preferred regions, luggage needs and the start and finish you can use. VeroTrip will discuss route suitability and the conditions needed for a written proposal.
