The most useful Yunnan itinerary is the one that protects time in each place. Five days supports two connected bases. Seven days works for Kunming, Dali and Lijiang. Eight to ten days can add Shangri-La or Shaxi. Twelve to fourteen days allows one meaningful extension instead of a rushed collection of distant regions.

Yunnan Itinerary Comparison
| Length | Recomme |
Best for | Main comprom |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 days | Kunming–Dali or Lijiang–Shangri-La | Short breaks and repeat China travell |
Only two bases |
| 7 days | Kunming–Dali–Lijiang | First visits with limited time | No relaxed Shangri-La extension |
| 8 days | Kunming–Dali–Lijiang–Shangri-La | Classic highlig |
Little room for Shaxi or long free time |
| 10 days | Classic route plus Shaxi or deeper stays | Balanced first journeys | Still choose only one extension |
| 12 days | Northwest route plus Meili, Lugu Lake or southern chapter | Active or cultura |
Remote sections need weather flexibi |
| 14 days | Deep northwest or northwest plus one southern region | Slower travel and stronger regional contrast | Cannot cover all Yunnan well |
5-Day Yunnan Itinerary
Option A: Kunming and Dali
- Day 1: Arrive in Kunming
- Day 2: Kunming city or Stone Forest
- Day 3: Train to Dali and easy old-town evening
- Day 4: Erhai-area villages and Bai cultural context
- Day 5: Depart from Dali or return connection
Option B: Lijiang and Shangri-La
- Day 1: Arrive in Lijiang
- Day 2: Baisha, Naxi heritage and Lijiang
- Day 3: Train or road to Shangri-La
- Day 4: Full highland day
- Day 5: Departure connection
Five days should not attempt Kunming, Dali, Lijiang and Shangri-La. Two consecutive evening transfers would remove the atmosphere the route is meant to provide.
7-Day Yunnan Itinerary
| Day | Base | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Kunming | Arrival and easy first evening |
| 2 | Kunming | One city or landscape day |
| 3 | Dali | Morning train and light Dali introdu |
| 4 | Dali | Erhai, Xizhou and Bai cultural context |
| 5 | Lijiang | Train or road to Lijiang |
| 6 | Lijiang | Baisha, Shuhe, Naxi heritage or mountain option |
| 7 | Lijiang | Departure |
This is the cleanest short first route. Shangri-La should be saved for another journey unless the travellers explicitly accept a faster pace.
8-Day Yunnan Itinerary
An eight-day route can add Shangri-La:
- Days 1–2: Kunming
- Days 3–4: Dali
- Days 5–6: Lijiang
- Days 7–8: Shangri-La and departure connection
The weakness is that arrival and departure timing may leave only one full highland day. Families and slower travellers may prefer three bases and use the extra night in Dali or Lijiang.
10-Day Yunnan Itinerary
Ten days is the most balanced range for a first journey:
- Days 1–2: Kunming
- Days 3–4: Dali
- Day 5: Road to Shaxi
- Days 6–7: Lijiang
- Days 8–9: Shangri-La, with Tiger Leaping Gorge or direct rail depending on conditions
- Day 10: Departure
Shaxi can be replaced by an extra Dali or Lijiang night. See the 10-day planning example for the reasoning behind each choice.
12-Day Yunnan Itinerary
Twelve days supports the classic route plus one defined interest:
- Slow cultural version: add two Shaxi nights and deeper Dali villages.
- Active version: add a two-day Tiger Leaping Gorge hike with luggage transfer.
- Highland version: continue from Shangri-La toward Deqin and Meili.
- Food version: build more markets, tea, coffee and regional kitchens into fewer bases.
Do not add every version. Each changes transport, fitness and hotel needs.
14-Day Yunnan Itinerary
Deep Northwest
Kunming → Dali → Shaxi → Lijiang → Tiger Leaping Gorge → Shangri-La → Meili. This route suits highland scenery and active travellers, with weather alternatives.
Northwest Plus Southern Yunnan
Use the first week for Kunming, Dali and Lijiang, then fly or travel toward Xishuangbanna for tea, rainforest and Dai cultural context. Avoid trying to connect every southern stop by road in the remaining days.
Southern Yunnan Journey
Kunming → Jianshui → Yuanyang → Pu’er → Jingmai → Xishuangbanna. This is a complete alternative to the classic northwest, not a secondary itinerary.
How Transport Changes the Route
Trains connect the main corridor efficiently, but stations sit outside the old towns. A two-hour train can occupy half a day once hotel transfers and security are included. Road travel adds value when it connects Shaxi, Tiger Leaping Gorge, villages or Yuanyang viewpoints. Use the Yunnan route map and train guide to estimate the whole travel day.
How Season Changes the Itinerary
- Winter: consider Yuanyang and Xishuangbanna; prepare for cold northwest nights.
- Spring: classic northwest routes work well, with blossom timing treated as variable.
- Summer: allow rain alternatives and consider food-focused highland travel.
- Autumn: useful for northwest and mountain routes outside the early-October holiday.

Which Length Fits Different Travellers?
| Traveller | Better starting point | Adjustm |
|---|---|---|
| Family with younger children | 8–10 days | Use three bases, easier hotel access and free afterno |
| Older travell |
9–12 days | Rise gradually and reduce one-night stays |
| Photogr |
10–14 days | Add sunrise alterna |
| Hikers | 10–14 days | Separate trail days from transfer days |
| Food and tea travell |
9–13 days | Choose fewer areas and deepen markets and producers |
| First China trip | 12–16 days total | Combine Yunnan with only one or two major Chinese cities |
Budget by Itinerary Length
Longer trips increase hotel and guide days, but a slower route can sometimes reduce expensive flights and long private transfers. For two travellers, an initial comfortable private-tour range is often USD 180–350 per person per day before a dated quote. Read the Yunnan tour cost guide.
Common Route Mistakes
- Counting arrival and departure as full sightseeing days
- Adding Shangri-La for one rushed night
- Combining Yuanyang with Dali and Lijiang on a short route
- Ignoring station transfers and old-town luggage access
- Scheduling a demanding mountain day immediately after reaching altitude
- Using the same daily pace for children, older travellers and active adults
Frequently Asked Questions
Is seven days enough for Yunnan?
Yes for Kunming, Dali and Lijiang. It is too short for a relaxed four-city route with Shangri-La.
What is the best 10-day Yunnan itinerary?
For most first visitors: Kunming, Dali, Lijiang and Shangri-La, with Shaxi or a slower city stay as the one extension.
Should I include both Dali and Lijiang?
Yes when the trip has at least seven days. Dali adds Erhai and Bai culture; Lijiang adds Naxi heritage and mountain access.
Can I include Xishuangbanna in ten days?
Only by removing part of the northwest route and using a flight or efficient rail connection. It is better treated as a separate southern chapter.
How many nights should I stay in Shangri-La?
Two or three nights is a useful minimum for altitude and one full highland day.
Can an itinerary be customised?
Yes. If the change materially alters a published schedule, a new itinerary can be prepared instead of overwriting the existing one.
Which city should I fly into?
Kunming is the main gateway, but Dali or Lijiang can reduce backtracking when flights fit the route.
Where should I start planning?
Choose the trip length and route family, then compare Yunnan private tours.
