Home / Guides / Dali vs Lijiang: Which Fits Your First Yunnan Trip?

Compare Dali and Lijiang by culture, hotel access and available nights. Choose one base or plan both with a clear route and realistic transfer days.

Choose Dali if your priority is time around Erhai Lake and Bai villages; choose Lijiang if you want to explore its historic settlements and Naxi cultural setting. With only three hotel nights in this part of Yunnan, choose one base after checking your arrival and departure connections. With four or more nights, you can consider both, accepting that the move between them uses part of a day. Neither city is automatically quieter or easier to walk: the hotel address and the actual daily plan matter.

Reviewed 3 October 2026. This comparison explains how to choose your bases; the Dali destination guide and Lijiang destination guide provide the wider sightseeing overview.

Decision Dali Lijiang
Main reason to choose it Erhai shore visits, Xizhou and Bai cultural context, with time between outings. Dayan, Shuhe and Baisha, with historic streets, waterways and Naxi cultural context.
What needs a separate plan The old town, Xizhou and different lakeside areas are separate stops; one hotel does not put everything at your door. Dayan, Shuhe and Baisha are distinct areas. A mountain excursion needs its own arrangements.
A starting stay Two nights for a selective visit; consider three when lake and village outings both matter. Two nights for a selective cultural visit; consider three if adding another settlement or a mountain day.
Hotel question Are you staying near the old town, in Xizhou or beside a specific part of the lake? Which settlement and exact street is the hotel in, and where can the vehicle stop?
If you dislike rushing Choose one shore section and one village visit instead of trying to circle the whole lake. Choose one main cultural outing each day instead of combining every old town and the mountain.
Main trade-off A lake-focused stay may mean transfers for old-town evenings or other villages. A historic-lane stay may involve carrying luggage between the pickup point and hotel.

These stay lengths are planning suggestions, not a minimum ticket requirement or a promise that all sights fit. Two nights usually leave one uninterrupted day between arrival and departure.

What Feels Different: Lake and Villages or Historic Settlements?

Choose Dali for an Erhai and Bai-village focus

A Dali stay works well when you want to divide time between a chosen part of the lakeshore, the old town and a village outing. Xizhou offers a useful focus for learning about Bai architecture. The Dali municipal government’s account of Xizhou residences describes their courtyards, painted decoration and varied architectural influences.

Make the day specific: agree which village area you will visit, whether a house or workshop is actually open to visitors, and how much walking you want. A building’s heritage value does not imply free public access. Our eight-day relaxed Yunnan route pairs Xizhou with selected west-shore stops and returns to the same Dali hotel; it does not promise a complete lake circuit.

Choose Lijiang for its historic townscape and Naxi context

Lijiang is worth considering when the settlements themselves are a central interest. UNESCO’s Old Town of Lijiang listing explains the cultural exchanges behind its architecture and water system, and includes Dayan, Baisha and Shuhe in its heritage description. Treat these as places with different settings rather than three names for the same walk.

You can build a Lijiang stay around cultural visits without including a high-mountain excursion. The published nine-day slow Yunnan route uses Baisha and Naxi cultural interpretation and has no scheduled high-mountain cable-car day. If Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is a priority, plan it separately and confirm the actual area, tickets and weather alternative for your date.

Three Situations That Change the Choice

You have three nights and want a relaxed break

Choose one base. Pick Dali if your ideal full day combines a village visit and a selected lakeshore stop; pick Lijiang if historic streets and cultural interpretation matter more. Keep the remaining full day flexible. Moving hotels to sample both cities would reduce the time available for the experiences that motivated the trip.

You are travelling with children, large suitcases or limited walking tolerance

Compare the proposed hotels before comparing the cities. Ask for the vehicle meeting point, distance and surface to the entrance, any steps, lift access and who handles luggage. A shorter itinerary with a confirmed practical hotel may suit you better than a longer sightseeing list. Age alone does not determine the right pace; describe what your group can comfortably do.

You want both cultural settings and have a longer Yunnan journey

Give the two places different jobs. Use Dali for Bai village and lakeshore time, then Lijiang for Naxi cultural visits and its historic settlements. Avoid repeating a generic old-town shopping walk in both places and calling it a balanced itinerary. Choose one meaningful outing in each base, with additional stops only when the transfer and arrival times leave room.

Where to Stay: Check the Address and the Last Part of the Journey

“Dali hotel” can mean a stay near the old town, a village base such as Xizhou or a particular lakeside location. “Lijiang old-town hotel” also needs clarification: ask whether it is in Dayan, Shuhe or another area. Compare the actual accommodation against your planned mornings and evenings. A scenic room photograph cannot show how far you will carry a suitcase.

  • Ask the hotel or operator to mark the vehicle drop-off point and the entrance you will use.
  • Check steps, uneven paving, room floor and lift access for the particular building and room.
  • Confirm the luggage assistance included on arrival, departure and any station transfer.
  • If quiet sleep matters, ask about the room’s position and nearby activity for your dates rather than assuming a whole town is quiet.

Use the Yunnan accommodation and hotel-access guide for a broader comparison. Specific access details still need confirmation with the selected property.

Can You Include Both in One Trip?

Yes. An illustrative seven-day trip can allocate two nights each to Kunming, Dali and Lijiang, then end in Lijiang on day seven. This keeps the route in sequence but still includes two intercity transfer days. It is a planning example, separate from the bookable six-, eight- and nine-day products below. Check your onward connection before accepting Lijiang as the endpoint.

Days Overnight base Main move Planning note
1–2 Kunming, 2 nights Arrival; local city travel Leave arrival flexible and retain a city day.
3–4 Dali, 2 nights Kunming → Dali; confirmed rail or private vehicle Transfer first; keep a separate day for selected lake or village visits.
5–6 Lijiang, 2 nights Dali → Lijiang; confirmed rail or private vehicle Transfer first; keep a separate cultural day.
7 No further night Hotel → Lijiang departure point Confirm the onward connection and pickup buffer.

A train’s running time is only part of the move: add checkout, travel to the correct station, station procedures and the final hotel transfer. A private vehicle avoids rail-station handovers but still uses a travel window. Current train services and seats must be checked for your date; this comparison makes no fixed fare or timetable claim. See the Yunnan train booking and station guide.

If you must finish in Kunming, allow separately for the return. The Yunnan itinerary-length comparison explains different allocations, while the Yunnan route map puts this corridor in its wider regional context.

Match Your Choice to a Published verotrip Tour

  • Six-day Kunming, Dali and Lijiang tour: a compact Kunming round trip. Its daily plan moves from Dali to Lijiang on day three, so it is a brief Dali stay, not the two-night Dali example shown above.
  • Eight-day relaxed private tour: two nights in each main sightseeing base, plus a final Kunming night. Its published plan uses rail for Kunming–Dali and Lijiang–Kunming, a private road transfer between Dali and Lijiang, and local guide handovers.
  • Nine-day family and slow-travel route: three Kunming nights, three Dali nights and two Lijiang nights, ending in Lijiang. It allows a flexible Dali day and focuses the Lijiang stay on cultural visits.

Compare the daily programme and dated inclusions, not just the number of days. Explore the private Yunnan tour collection when you are ready to compare complete routes.

Questions Before You Decide

Do I need to choose Dali first just because I arrive in Kunming?

No. Your actual arrival and onward connections, available nights and priorities determine the route. Kunming → Dali → Lijiang is one useful sequence when visiting both. If only Lijiang fits your interests, check a route centred on Lijiang instead of adding a Dali stay simply to follow an example.

Can I stay in one city and treat the other as a day trip?

For this kind of first-trip comparison, we suggest choosing one city or allowing an overnight stay in each. A same-day return adds a second intercity journey and leaves less time for the destination. Compare the complete hotel-to-hotel schedule before committing, rather than treating a rail journey as the full outing.

Which city will be cheaper?

There is no supported city-wide price ranking in this guide. Compare the same dates, number of travellers, room standard, hotel location and transport services. A room that looks less expensive may require more transfers. Ask for an itemised proposal and confirm what is included before judging the total.

Does choosing Lijiang mean I must book Jade Dragon Snow Mountain?

No. Historic settlements and cultural visits can be the focus of the stay. The linked nine-day route provides one published example without a scheduled high-mountain cable-car excursion. If you want the mountain, ask separately about the exact visitor area, requirements, availability and alternative if conditions change.

Plan Around the Experience You Want

Tell verotrip your travel dates, arrival and departure cities, available hotel nights, room preferences and comfortable walking distance. Add whether lake time, village architecture or Lijiang’s historic settlements matter most. We can use those choices to propose a route and check the specific services before you book.
