Plan a Laos–China–Kyrgyzstan overland trip: compare Irkeshtam and Torugart, a 27-day China route, vehicle documents, rest stops and border-day choices.

For a Laos–China–Kyrgyzstan overland trip, choose the Kyrgyzstan exit before fixing your Chinese sightseeing stops. From Kashgar, Irkeshtam connects towards Sary-Tash and Osh; Torugart connects towards Naryn and Bishkek. Confirm both sides’ acceptance of your passports, vehicle and dates before committing to either.

A mainland route can link Mohan, Kunming, Chengdu, the Gansu Silk Road corridor and southern Xinjiang. The example below gives that China section 27 days and 26 nights, including time for entry arrangements and several longer stays. Add the journey through Laos, your Kyrgyzstan nights and extra contingency separately. These are overnight planning bases; hotels, tickets and cross-border services require a written proposal.

Updated 15 October 2026.

Irkeshtam or Torugart: start with your onward destination

The right port reduces unnecessary driving after China. Compare the next region you want to visit, where you can stop after clearance, and who coordinates the handover. An international checkpoint’s existence does not establish admission for every nationality or foreign-registered campervan.

Exit from the Kashgar area Where it leads Decide before booking
Irkeshtam / 伊尔克什坦 Sary-Tash and the approach towards Osh, in southern Kyrgyzstan. The accepted passenger and vehicle channel; the Chinese clearance location; your first Kyrgyzstan overnight and daylight available after entry.
Torugart / 吐尔尕特 Naryn, then the route towards Kochkor and Bishkek. Specific nationality and vehicle acceptance, receiving arrangements, mountain conditions and the first overnight beyond the crossing.
A different country or return route A different border and a different set of permissions. An amended China route, lawful vehicle departure and the next country’s admission. Agree these before changing direction.
Choose the Kyrgyzstan exit: numbered geographic planning map
Choose the gold Irkeshtam–Osh branch or the blue Torugart–Naryn–Bishkek branch. This north-up diagram uses approximate place locations; it shows neither road geometry nor the separate inspection offices. Select it to enlarge.

Ask for the actual Chinese processing point and the agreed meeting location, rather than navigating to a border marker. Vehicle offices, passenger inspection and the physical frontier can be different places. A bus timetable, freight announcement or another traveller’s taxi journey cannot settle an own-vehicle crossing.

Check the person and the vehicle separately

Use Kyrgyzstan’s official visa information portal for your passport and travel-document category. Ask the authorities to confirm the intended land checkpoint for your particular visa or exemption. Check the distinction between the visa’s validity window and the permitted stay. Do this for every passenger.

Then establish the Kyrgyz vehicle procedure: registration and ownership evidence, any authorisation from the owner, the declarant, insurance and the required re-export record. A Chinese temporary plate or driving permit does not grant these permissions. Keep both countries’ clearance records with your vehicle papers.

How much time should you set aside?

Count usable China days from road-border arrival to completed departure formalities. Pre-trip applications, the drive across Laos and the journey beyond the Kyrgyz frontier belong outside that count. Reserve additional flexibility within the validity of every relevant document.

China time you are considering How to shape the route What needs protecting
About 17 days Discuss a transit-led crossing with few sightseeing stops. Obtain the actual daily distances and wheel times before deciding. Entry and exit work, driver rest and a lawful contingency plan. A published short itinerary alone does not prove a workable schedule.
About 22–23 days Remove a whole detour or selected sightseeing stays from the longer framework. Long-road breaks through Sichuan, Gansu and southern Xinjiang. Avoid taking every saved day from formalities and recovery time.
27 days plus extra flexibility Compare the full framework below, with multi-night bases in Kunming, Chengdu, Dunhuang and Kashgar. Room for a changed working calendar or road stage, agreed before travel; no processing duration is guaranteed.
More time for Yunnan or the mountains Add a coherent regional stay and revise the remaining road stages. Dali, Lijiang, a plateau route or a different exit can change the permissions and the whole calendar.

This example prioritises the onward Kyrgyzstan crossing. It travels from Kunming towards Chengdu via Zhaotong and Yibin. If the Yunnan old towns are the main holiday, compare a Yunnan journey starting from Laos before combining them with a long trans-China drive. The broader China overland route comparison helps when the exit country is still undecided.

A 27-day framework, with 26 nights in China

Use this to discuss pacing, not to infer a road permit or a fixed departure. The opening three days keep vehicle work and initial rest near the entry area. Extra working days may be necessary. Remain within the area and conditions allowed by your documents until you can continue.

Day Overnight base China nights Main purpose
1–3 Mohan / Mengla 3 Arrive through the agreed road channel; complete the arranged formalities, rest and prepare the vehicle.
4 Pu’er 1 Begin the northbound drive after the documents permit it. Keep arrival plans flexible.
5–6 Kunming 2 Use a city/rest day for a modest local visit, supplies and any vehicle attention.
7 Zhaotong 1 Break the mainland approach to Sichuan. Choose the hotel by access and parking.
8 Yibin 1 Continue north with a separate overnight rather than combining every stage into one long day.
9–10 Chengdu 2 Keep one day free of intercity driving; select a compact city experience.
11 Guangyuan 1 Take the agreed northbound road stage and arrive with time to settle in.
12 Longnan 1 Retain another road break through the mountain corridor.
13 Tianshui 1 Continue towards Gansu without adding an ambitious excursion to a long arrival day.
14 Lanzhou 1 Restock and review the next Silk Road stages.
15 Zhangye 1 Choose any landscape visit around the real arrival time and ticket conditions.
16 Jiayuguan 1 Keep the regional stop distinct from the next drive towards Dunhuang.
17–18 Dunhuang 2 Allow a separate sightseeing day. Arrange any cave visit around actual ticket availability.
19 Hami 1 Continue west on the accepted corridor with a dedicated overnight.
20 Turpan 1 Keep sightseeing proportionate to the transfer and the day’s temperature.
21 Korla 1 Turn towards southern Xinjiang; agree fuel and overnight access for the vehicle.
22 Kuqa 1 Break the westbound journey; select one local visit only if arrival permits.
23 Aksu 1 Keep the final approach to Kashgar as a separate road stage.
24–26 Kashgar 3 Set aside city time, rest and the agreed exit preparations. Resolve the next-country handover.
27 China exit via Irkeshtam 0 Use the agreed crossing day. The first Kyrgyzstan overnight is additional to the 26 China nights.

For a Torugart exit, revise Day 27 and the onward accommodation around the confirmed arrangements. The China night total remains 26 only if the preceding allocation stays the same. Do not count a night in Naryn, Sary-Tash or Osh as a Chinese hotel night. Equally, extra time after entry into Kyrgyzstan does not solve a document deadline while the vehicle is still in China.

Laos to Chengdu: numbered geographic planning map
The southern part uses a direct mainland connection through Kunming, Zhaotong and Yibin. The numbered places match the overnight table; connecting lines express sequence rather than driving roads.
Chengdu to Kashgar: numbered geographic planning map
After Gansu, this example continues from Turpan through Korla, Kuqa and Aksu to Kashgar. Dunhuang is a sightseeing detour. Urumqi, the Duku Road and Tibet are outside this framework.

Choose daily stages using the actual vehicle

Ask for distances and wheel time calculated from the permitted roads and the hotel entrances. Map lines cannot supply those numbers. Separate driving time from inspections, meals, refuelling, sightseeing and city access. A campervan’s dimensions, a motorcycle group’s fuel range or one main driver can change the useful stopping points.

Protect the multi-night bases if you tire easily or travel with children. A shorter holiday is better discussed by removing a regional visit than by making every evening later. For an alternative trip beginning inside China, compare the Xi’an-to-Urumqi Silk Road programme and the self-drive journey collection. Their own routes and service terms apply.

Arrange the documents in the order the journey needs them

Send the receiving team the passenger and vehicle details before discussing non-refundable bookings. Build one calendar showing arrival dates, permitted regions, the chosen exit and expiry dates. Changes to a port, driver or vehicle need an answer before departure.

Decision Have ready Confirm the outcome
People entering China Every passport nationality, travel document, intended entry/exit, travel dates and relevant visa or exemption. The actual lawful stay and permitted movement for this journey. A visa decision does not admit the vehicle.
Vehicle entering China Registration, owner’s authority, class, dimensions, seats, relevant translations and customs papers. The receiving plan, temporary admission, applicable inspection and Chinese compulsory insurance.
Each person who will drive The appropriate foreign licence and required supporting documents for the intended vehicle class. The necessary Chinese driving permission, issue location, validity and territorial conditions.
Regional and border access The accepted road itinerary and the exact final border arrangements. Any applicable foreign-person border-area procedure, local access restrictions and the agreed inspection/meeting points.
People and vehicle entering Kyrgyzstan Each person’s accepted entry document, plus the vehicle ownership, driving and insurance dossier. Acceptance at the selected road checkpoint, temporary-import responsibilities and the applicable re-export deadline.
Completion and onward travel Clearance records, contact details and the next overnight. Chinese departure completed, Kyrgyz entry recorded, and a lawful plan if either stage cannot proceed.

The Chinese vehicle-office guidance illustrates why registration, customs evidence, insurance and the receiving plan are separate parts of the dossier. Its Beijing office arrangements are not a Mohan timetable. Read the practical Mohan–Boten road-crossing guide for that entry decision.

Chinese driving permission also has its own validity rules, explained in Suzhou police guidance. Its duration cannot extend your immigration stay or your vehicle’s permission. The 240-hour immigration policy has separate eligibility and route conditions; a 27-day drive cannot fit within ten days. For the full vehicle preparation, use the car and campervan entry guide.

Plan the crossing day around offices, weather and the first night

Kyrgyz customs’ 30 April 2026 notice temporarily changed both ports’ operation for people, vehicles and cargo. It labels its times in Bishkek time. Those dates illustrate why you need a current crossing calendar; they do not supply today’s opening hours.

Put the appointment, clearance deadline and handover in both sides’ local times. Agree the final check before leaving Kashgar, the person reachable if the schedule changes, and the decision point for returning to an agreed overnight. Avoid building the plan around a last-minute border arrival or a non-refundable same-evening flight.

Situation Practical response Agree who handles it
An office or checkpoint changes its working day Stay at a workable base and recheck the legal calendar before moving. Extra accommodation, revised appointments and document validity.
Snow, poor visibility or an interrupted approach Follow official/local instructions and delay the affected stage. An appropriate overnight, road update, recovery and any necessary route amendment.
Clearance finishes later than expected Reassess the first Kyrgyz overnight against daylight, conditions and driver fatigue. Contact on the Kyrgyz side, accommodation and the accepted vehicle/driver handover.
A passport, vehicle or permission is not accepted Resolve the specific issue with the responsible authorities and receiving parties. A lawful revised departure and customs responsibility; changing ports requires its own arrangements.

The UK’s Kyrgyzstan road and mountain advice describes winter road interruptions and limited rural fuel availability. Check the fuel type and realistic range before leaving a suitable supply point. Confirm what is permitted before carrying extra fuel across a border. Decide where you can stop if a mountain stage becomes unsuitable.

For travellers concerned about altitude, compare sleeping locations as well as the highest road point. Take medical advice for your circumstances. The CDC’s altitude guidance explains gradual acclimatisation and why worsening symptoms require action. A quick crossing or physical fitness does not remove altitude risk.

Make the long drive comfortable for your group

Parking and luggage: provide the vehicle’s real height, length and width, including roof equipment. Ask each overnight property about the usable entrance and parking arrangement. A hotel described as central may involve a walk with bags. Keep documents, medication, warm layers, drinking water and an overnight bag accessible if the vehicle has to be emptied for inspection.

Food and prayer: explain your requirements separately: ingredients, preparation, cross-contact, preferred meal times and a suitable prayer space. A mosque in Kashgar is a place to discuss respectfully; its photograph is not confirmation of tourist entry, prayer access or opening hours. Halal food requirements need venue-level answers, including hotel breakfast and road days. Have a practical meal alternative for delayed arrivals.

A Kunming snack stall. Ask about ingredients and choose meals around your own dietary needs.

Children and older travellers: favour convenient access, familiar food choices and lighter city days after long transfers. Establish suitable child restraints and walking needs from the start. For a self-driven journey, discuss a schedule the actual drivers can sustain. A guide’s presence is not evidence that someone else is licensed and insured to drive your vehicle.

Compare a quote by responsibilities

Ask for a dated proposal tied to your actual passports, vehicle, route and group. Separate official charges and refundable security from professional services. A price from another traveller or an old departure cannot establish your total.

Part of the proposal What should be explicit
Vehicle and border work Named receiving parties; paperwork, translation, customs, plate and driving-permission scope; any deposits and release evidence.
People supporting the route Guide or driver role, language, locations, dates and handover; whether any driving of your vehicle is actually included.
Travel and accommodation 26 China nights only if that framework is agreed; hotel standard, parking, meals, fuel, tolls, visits and ticket arrangements.
Insurance and disruption Territories, vehicle class, liability and personal cover; recovery, waiting, extra nights and route-change terms.
Kyrgyzstan continuation The first overnight, accepted vehicle procedure, insurance and any local services after the Chinese exit.

Questions that change the decision

Can I drive this route in the other direction?

Use the same corridor comparison, then rebuild the entry and exit arrangements for the actual direction. Starting in Kyrgyzstan changes the first China office work and the Laos arrival conditions. Reversing the table does not carry over the permissions.

Can I take a rental car instead of my own vehicle?

Ask the owner and the relevant authorities about cross-border authority before planning around it. Domestic rental availability does not establish permission to export the car. A journey using flights and domestic vehicle arrangements can be a separate option.

Can I combine an arrival flight with a border transfer?

You can investigate passenger travel separately, with the appropriate visa and an accepted transport arrangement. It needs its own schedule and luggage plan. Passenger transport is not an alternative customs procedure for a foreign car you still have to move legally.

What if I want Kazakhstan rather than Kyrgyzstan?

The Laos–China–Kazakhstan route uses a different northern Xinjiang finish and different onward entry requirements. Choose the country before fixing the final Chinese stages.

Discuss your overland journey

Use VeroTrip’s trip enquiry to send dates, every passenger’s nationality, group size, driver licences, vehicle registration country and dimensions, ownership arrangements, the onward Kyrgyz destination and your available time. Include dietary, prayer, walking and parking needs. Request a route-specific proposal identifying the receiving parties, services and responsibilities before making bookings.
