Compare 5, 7, 8, 10, 12 and 14 days in Yunnan by overnight stops, pace and travel days. Choose a classic circuit or a slower three-city trip.

A Yunnan (云南) itinerary should begin with the nights available, then the places you most want to experience. Five to seven days suits a compact route; longer journeys can add another region or simply slow the pace. Compare the overnight sequence and transfer days below before choosing between the sample routes.

Quick Answer: How Many Days Do You Need?

For a first Yunnan trip, start with seven or eight days if you want Kunming (昆明), Dali (大理) and Lijiang (丽江) without changing hotels every night. Five days works better as a focused two-base visit. Ten days gives more room for a highland stay or a village detour, while twelve to fourteen days can support a slower northwest route or one carefully chosen extension. Count overnight stays and transfer days before counting attractions: eight days normally provides seven hotel nights, and arrival and departure still occupy part of the schedule. Use the examples below to choose your pace, then check the linked product’s actual daily route.

Compare private Yunnan tour packages once you have chosen a trip length. This guide explains the trade-offs between durations; each product page specifies its own route and services.

Yunnan Itinerary Comparison

Length Recommended route Best for Main compromise
5 days Kunming–Dali or Lijiang–Shangri-La (香格里拉) Short breaks and repeat China (中国) travellers Only two bases
7 days Kunming–Dali–Lijiang First visits with limited time No relaxed Shangri-La extension
8 days Three-city slow route, or a fuller circuit including Shangri-La First visits with a clear preference for pace or coverage The same seven nights can mean very different hotel changes
10 days Classic route plus Shaxi (沙溪) or deeper stays Balanced first journeys Still choose only one extension
12 days Northwest route plus Meili (梅里雪山), Lugu Lake (泸沽湖) or southern chapter Active or culturally focused travel Remote sections need weather flexibility
14 days Deep northwest or northwest plus one southern region Slower travel and stronger regional contrast Cannot cover all Yunnan well

5-Day Yunnan Itinerary

Option A: Kunming and Dali

  • Day 1: Arrive in Kunming
  • Day 2: Kunming city or Stone Forest (石林)
  • Day 3: Train to Dali and easy old-town evening
  • Day 4: Erhai (洱海)-area villages and Bai (白族) cultural context
  • Day 5: Depart from Dali or return connection

Option B: Lijiang and Shangri-La

  • Day 1: Arrive in Lijiang
  • Day 2: Baisha (白沙古镇), Naxi (纳西族) heritage and Lijiang
  • Day 3: Train or road to Shangri-La
  • Day 4: Full highland day
  • Day 5: Departure connection

Five days should not attempt Kunming, Dali, Lijiang and Shangri-La. Two consecutive evening transfers would remove the atmosphere the route is meant to provide.

7-Day Yunnan Itinerary

Read the detailed seven-day itinerary.

Day Base Plan
1 Kunming Arrival and easy first evening
2 Kunming One city or landscape day
3 Dali Morning train and light Dali introduction
4 Dali Erhai, Xizhou (喜洲) and Bai cultural context
5 Lijiang Train or road to Lijiang
6 Lijiang Baisha, Shuhe (束河古镇), Naxi heritage or mountain option
7 Lijiang Departure

This is the cleanest short first route. Shangri-La should be saved for another journey unless the travellers explicitly accept a faster pace.

8-Day Yunnan Itinerary: More Places or More Breathing Room?

Eight days can describe very different trips. Compare the number of hotel changes and the actual overnight sequence, not just the list of cities.

Decision Relaxed three-city route Fuller classic circuit
Published product 8-day relaxed Kunming, Dali and Lijiang tour 8-day classic Yunnan private tour
City order Kunming → Dali → Lijiang → Kunming Kunming → Dali → Shangri-La → Lijiang → Kunming
Seven hotel nights Kunming 2 + Dali 2 + Lijiang 2 + Kunming 1 Kunming 1 + Dali 2 + Shangri-La 1 + Lijiang 2 + Kunming 1
What the extra time protects Two-night stays, village visits, lakeside pauses and an easier final connection A Shangri-La overnight and the named sights along the fuller circuit
What to check The selected mountain experience, train seats and guide handovers Long transfer days, the brief highland stay and departure-day sightseeing

The relaxed trip uses first-class rail for Kunming–Dali and Lijiang–Kunming, with a private road transfer between Dali and Lijiang. Local English-speaking driver-guides hand over between destinations; the train journeys are taken independently with boarding guidance. The classic trip includes more places, with only one night in Shangri-La. Compare each product’s inclusions separately.

For a planning outline with three sightseeing bases, read the detailed eight-day Yunnan guide. If keeping only three hotel stays matters more than returning to Kunming, compare the nine-day family route ending in Lijiang.

10-Day Yunnan Itinerary

Compare the ten-day route and extensions.

Ten days is the most balanced range for a first journey:

  • Days 1–2: Kunming
  • Days 3–4: Dali
  • Day 5: Road to Shaxi
  • Days 6–7: Lijiang
  • Days 8–9: Shangri-La, with Tiger Leaping Gorge (虎跳峡) or direct rail depending on conditions
  • Day 10: Departure

Shaxi can be replaced by an extra Dali or Lijiang night. See the 10-day planning example for the reasoning behind each choice.

12-Day Yunnan Itinerary

Twelve days supports the classic route plus one defined interest:

  • Slow cultural version: add two Shaxi nights and deeper Dali villages.
  • Active version: add a two-day Tiger Leaping Gorge hike with luggage transfer.
  • Highland version: continue from Shangri-La toward Deqin (德钦) and Meili.
  • Food version: build more markets, tea, coffee and regional kitchens into fewer bases.

Do not add every version. Each changes transport, fitness and hotel needs.

14-Day Yunnan Itinerary

Deep Northwest

Kunming → Dali → Shaxi → Lijiang → Tiger Leaping Gorge → Shangri-La → Meili. This route suits highland scenery and active travellers, with weather alternatives.

Northwest Plus Southern Yunnan

Use the first week for Kunming, Dali and Lijiang, then fly or travel toward Xishuangbanna (西双版纳) for tea, rainforest and Dai (傣族) cultural context. Avoid trying to connect every southern stop by road in the remaining days.

Southern Yunnan Journey

Kunming → Jianshui (建水) → Yuanyang (元阳) → Pu’er (普洱) → Jingmai (景迈山) → Xishuangbanna. This is a complete alternative to the classic northwest, not a secondary itinerary.

How Transport Changes the Route

Trains connect the main corridor efficiently, but stations sit outside the old towns. A two-hour train can occupy half a day once hotel transfers and security are included. Road travel adds value when it connects Shaxi, Tiger Leaping Gorge, villages or Yuanyang viewpoints. Use the Yunnan route map and train guide to estimate the whole travel day.

How Season Changes the Itinerary

  • Winter: consider Yuanyang and Xishuangbanna; prepare for cold northwest nights.
  • Spring: classic northwest routes work well, with blossom timing treated as variable.
  • Summer: allow rain alternatives and consider food-focused highland travel.
  • Autumn: useful for northwest and mountain routes outside the early-October holiday.

Which Length Fits Different Travellers?

Traveller Better starting point Adjustment
Family with younger children 8–10 days Use three bases, easier hotel access and free afternoons
Older travellers 9–12 days Rise gradually and reduce one-night stays
Photographers 10–14 days Add sunrise alternatives and weather buffers
Hikers 10–14 days Separate trail days from transfer days
Food and tea travellers 9–13 days Choose fewer areas and deepen markets and producers
First China trip 12–16 days total Combine Yunnan with only one or two major Chinese cities

Budget by Itinerary Length

Compare quotes with the same number of travellers, room arrangement, transport level and included visits. More days usually add hotel and service costs, but extra stops can also add long transfers, flights and separate guide arrangements. A longer stay in fewer places may use the budget differently from a fast circuit of the same duration.

Request a dated, itemised quotation covering hotels, transfers, guide language, rail class, attraction tickets, meals and any optional mountain transport. This comparison does not set a per-person daily price. Use the Yunnan tour inclusions guide to organise the questions to ask.

Common Route Mistakes

  • Counting arrival and departure as full sightseeing days
  • Adding Shangri-La for one rushed night
  • Combining Yuanyang with Dali and Lijiang on a short route
  • Ignoring station transfers and old-town luggage access
  • Scheduling a demanding mountain day immediately after reaching altitude
  • Using the same daily pace for children, older travellers and active adults

Frequently Asked Questions

Is seven days enough for Yunnan?

Seven days is a useful starting point for Kunming, Dali and Lijiang if your arrival and departure connections leave enough usable time. A simple six-night allocation is two nights in each city, finishing in Lijiang. Adding Shangri-La to the same week creates more movement; remove another stop or add days when an unhurried highland visit matters.

What changes between a classic and a relaxed eight-day tour?

The linked relaxed eight-day product stays in Kunming, Dali and Lijiang before returning to Kunming. The classic eight-day product also visits Shangri-La and has more hotel changes. Both have seven nights, but they distribute those nights differently. Compare the overnight table, transfer days and inclusions before choosing; the duration alone does not describe the pace.

What is a practical 10-day Yunnan itinerary?

One planning option uses two nights each in Kunming, Dali and Lijiang, followed by three in Shangri-La and departure from that end of the route. Another uses one of those nights for Shaxi. Check your flights and interests before choosing between them. These are proposed allocations, and a longer highland stay does not guarantee that altitude will suit every traveller.

Should I include both Dali and Lijiang?

Include both when you want their different cultural settings and have time for the transfer: Dali is useful for Bai villages and the Erhai area, while Lijiang provides Naxi heritage and nearby village or mountain visits. On a short break, one well-chosen base can be more rewarding than two arrival evenings. Choose the places that match your interests.

Can I include Xishuangbanna in ten days?

You can design a ten-day trip with Xishuangbanna, but it should replace part of the northwest route instead of simply being added to it. Confirm the actual flight or rail connection, including station transfers, and protect full days after arrival. For a tea, food or tropical-landscape focus, a southern Yunnan (滇南) route may be the better starting point.

Are arrival and departure days included in the tour length?

Yes, the planning examples count both. Eight days normally provides seven overnight stays, although the number of sightseeing hours depends on your connections. An evening arrival and an early departure leave less usable time than midday flights. Provide those times before the daily plan is confirmed, especially when the final day includes sightseeing or a return to Kunming.

Does a longer itinerary have to include more destinations?

No. Extra days can mean a second village visit, a free afternoon, time for laundry, an easier mountain-day alternative or a buffer before your onward flight. A twelve-day trip with fewer bases can be more suitable than an eight-day circuit with many transfers. Decide what the additional nights should improve before adding another distant place.

Which city should I arrive in and depart from?

Start with the available flights and the route you actually want. A Kunming round trip is useful when that is your international or domestic gateway. Entering in Kunming and leaving from Lijiang or Shangri-La can reduce backtracking if suitable connections exist. Compare the complete journey, including local transfers and any overnight needed before the flight.

Local Planner Notes: Check the Nights First

Begin with your actual arrival and departure times. Mark each hotel night, each change of base and the days that include regional transport. Only then add activities. Read the destination details for Dali, Lijiang and Shangri-La when deciding which stops deserve more time. Families can also compare the Family Tours.

5 days = Kunming 2 + Dali 2; 7 days = Kunming 2 + Dali 2 + Lijiang 2; 8 days = Kunming 2 + Dali 2 + Lijiang 2 + Kunming 1; 10 days = Kunming 2 + Dali 2 + Lijiang 2 + Shangri-La 3; 12 days = Kunming 2 + Dali 2 + Shaxi 2 + Lijiang 3 + Shangri-La 2; 14 days = Kunming 2 + Dali 3 + Shaxi 2 + Lijiang 3 + Shangri-La 3. The 8-day example returns to Kunming; the other examples finish in the final named town. The 12- and 14-day allocations are slower northwest examples, separate from the longer-distance published circuit linked above.

Choose a route that suits your arrival times, pace and interests. Transport, services and activity access are confirmed for your travel dates.
