A foreign licence or an International Driving Permit on its own does not authorise driving in mainland China. Eligible visitors must obtain the locally issued Chinese temporary driving permit before taking the wheel. Permit handling, rental eligibility, road access and the final overnight plan are reconfirmed for your passport, licence, travel dates and chosen vehicle before any non-refundable booking is made.
Why this VeroTrip road trip is different
Photographers and active travellers who want high mountain scenery but prefer to return to Chengdu rather than continue into the Tibet Autonomous Region. Zimei Pass appears in older itineraries but cannot be promised. The operating team confirms the open, legal viewpoint route for the exact dates—such as a recognised observation area near Xinduqiao or another locally authorised alternative.
Choose between supported self-drive and a private professional-driver version. The final proposal names the vehicle class, number of seats after luggage, insurance scope, deposit, mileage policy, tolls, fuel, one-way fee, roadside support and the person responsible for each remote sector. We do not hide those decisions behind “vehicle included”.
Best time, pace and road conditions
May to June and September to early November often provide a useful balance, but cloud, snow and road controls can change any Gongga viewpoint day. Daily distances are planning estimates, not promises of arrival time. Road works, weather, queues, park reservations and hotel access can change the operating route.
Who should choose self-drive—and who should not
Self-drive works best for guests who are comfortable reading traffic situations through a bilingual navigation setup, sharing driving and accepting local parking and toll routines. Choose the professional-driver version if you want every traveller to enjoy the scenery, if only one person is confident behind the wheel, or if the itinerary includes a particularly demanding remote sector. A mixed solution is also possible.

Daily Itinerary
Meet the road-trip team, rest and check the loop, altitude profile and viewpoint alternatives. Driving decision: No post-flight self-driving is scheduled.
Complete temporary permit processing and vehicle orientation. If timing permits, visit a panda base with a guide rather than driving immediately into the mountains. Driving decision: The first long sector waits until paperwork is complete.
Drive about 200 km toward Mount Siguniang with careful rest stops and an early arrival. Driving decision: Current Balang Mountain tunnel and G350 controls are checked before departure.
Use park shuttle transport and take an adjustable walk in Shuangqiao Valley. Driving decision: The car stays parked and travellers acclimatise.
Continue to Danba and Jiaju through deep valleys. Visit a selected watchtower or village viewpoint with local guidance. Driving decision: Short mileage leaves margin for road works.
Drive via Bamei to Tagong, adding grassland and monastery context without overloading the day. Driving decision: Local access and photography rules are respected.
A longer drive via Daofu and Luhuo reaches Garze before dark. Driving decision: Fuel and lunch are planned before remote stretches.
Travel south on the confirmed open route. A Yarchen detour is used only when foreign access and road conditions are clearly confirmed. Driving decision: The base itinerary does not depend on that detour.
Drive toward Xinduqiao through changing valleys and plateau scenery, arriving early enough to prepare for the mountain-view day. Driving decision: Weather forecasts are compared from multiple local sources.
Use the best open, authorised viewpoint selected for current road conditions. A local 4×4 transfer may replace the rental car on a permitted rough approach. Driving decision: Zimei Pass is included only when current access is explicitly authorised and road conditions are suitable; otherwise, use the confirmed alternative viewpoint.
Return toward Kangding at a relaxed pace, with a hot-spring or cultural stop if timing and interest suit. Driving decision: This shorter day absorbs viewpoint delays.
Descend to Luding and continue to Chengdu, returning the vehicle before evening traffic becomes difficult. Driving decision: A separate night is kept before departure.
Private transfer to the airport or railway station, or begin a city extension. Driving decision: Pickup time accounts for the actual terminal and traffic.
