16-Day Kham & Amdo High-Altitude Self-Drive Expedition
Overview
An advanced east-Tibetan-plateau expedition that links Kham and Amdo cultural regions outside the standard city circuit, designed around acclimatisation and operational honesty rather than maximum daily mileage. A foreign licence or an International Driving Permit on its own does not authorise driving in mainland China. Eligible visitors must obtain the locally issued Chinese temporary driving permit before taking the wheel. Permit handling, rental eligibility, road access and the final overnight plan are reconfirmed for your passport, licence, travel dates and chosen vehicle before any non-refundable booking is made.

Why this VeroTrip road trip is different
Experienced mountain drivers with previous altitude exposure, flexible expectations and strong travel insurance. This is not recommended for a first China road trip or for travellers who require luxury accommodation every night. This expedition reaches sleeping elevations above 4,000 metres and includes remote services. It is offered only after a traveller and route suitability check, with a support vehicle, oxygen for emergency response and a descent plan—not as a promise that oxygen prevents altitude illness. Choose between supported self-drive and a private professional-driver version. The final proposal names the vehicle class, number of seats after luggage, insurance scope, deposit, mileage policy, tolls, fuel, one-way fee, roadside support and the person responsible for each remote sector. We do not hide those decisions behind “vehicle included”.
Best time, pace and road conditions
A narrow late-spring to early-autumn window is usually most realistic. Snow, flooding, grassland conditions and local access can change faster than a static web itinerary. Daily distances are planning estimates, not promises of arrival time. Road works, weather, queues, park reservations and hotel access can change the operating route.
Who should choose self-drive—and who should not
Self-drive works best for guests who are comfortable reading traffic situations through a bilingual navigation setup, sharing driving and accepting local parking and toll routines. Choose the professional-driver version if you want every traveller to enjoy the scenery, if only one person is confident behind the wheel, or if the itinerary includes a particularly demanding remote sector. A mixed solution is also possible.

Daily Itinerary
Meet the expedition team, rest at low altitude and discuss medical access, communications, luggage and driver experience. The route manager explains which sectors may change and what a safe descent looks like. Driving decision: Travel insurance wording is checked before final confirmation.
Complete temporary-permit formalities and conduct a detailed vehicle inspection. Test navigation, offline maps, radio or messaging backup, tyre equipment and the support-car protocol. Driving decision: No one drives remotely until the team is comfortable with the vehicle.
Drive from the basin toward Mount Siguniang with regular stops. The day ends around the first meaningful sleeping altitude, giving the body time to respond before moving higher. Driving decision: Any concerning symptoms trigger a pause or descent.
Use park transport and choose a short valley walk. The team checks sleep, appetite and headache symptoms rather than treating the rest day as spare time to fill aggressively. Driving decision: The following route remains adjustable.
A short mountain drive leads to Danba and Jiaju. Village viewpoints, watchtowers and a relaxed afternoon balance road time with recovery. Driving decision: The hotel is chosen for vehicle access and heating.
Climb gradually through Bamei toward Tagong grassland. Cultural visits are coordinated respectfully, and the group avoids late-night driving on livestock roads. Driving decision: Weather checks begin for the higher northern sector.
Drive via Daofu and Luhuo to Garze with planned fuel and lunch. The support team monitors road notices and confirms the next two remote overnights. Driving decision: A shorter stop in Luhuo is retained as a fallback.
Travel roughly 300 km toward Shiqu on the confirmed open route. This is a high, exposed day with sparse services, so an early departure and daylight arrival are mandatory. Driving decision: Foreign-guest accommodation acceptance is checked directly.
Cross remote plateau country toward Maduo. The page does not romanticise the altitude: eating, hydration, warmth and symptom monitoring matter more than adding roadside detours. Driving decision: The support car carries emergency supplies and a descent plan.
Plan limited driving or a short locally permitted excursion. Maduo remains at high altitude; this is not a lower-altitude recovery stop. The confirmed programme must identify an appropriate descent option if needed. The final programme depends on health, weather and conservation rules around the source-region landscapes. Driving decision: Wildlife and protected areas are viewed only from permitted routes.
Begin the long descent toward Qinghai Lake with scheduled driver changes and rest breaks. Arrive before dark and choose a quiet lakeside area that is legally accessible. Driving decision: A Xining diversion remains available if anyone needs lower altitude or medical evaluation.
Continue through Qinghai and Gansu toward Xiahe, using a route that balances scenery and reliable road conditions. The day ends with a calm monastery-town evening. Driving decision: Exact mileage depends on the chosen Qinghai Lake overnight.
Leave the car parked for a guided Labrang visit, local meal and rest. This improves cultural depth and gives drivers a break after the plateau crossing. Driving decision: Photography and prayer-hall rules are explained locally.
Descend through Gansu toward Tianshui, with a proper lunch stop and optional local heritage visit. Better roads do not remove the need for regular breaks. Driving decision: Arrive early enough to prepare for the final highway day.
Complete the road expedition on established highways and return the vehicle. A final team check helps travellers understand any route changes and organise onward tickets. Driving decision: No same-evening international flight is recommended.
Transfer for departure or begin a separate Xi’an extension for the Terracotta Warriors and City Wall. The extension is clearly priced and scheduled rather than silently compressed into the driving programme. Driving decision: Departure pickup uses the confirmed terminal and ticket time.
