A point-to-point journey that shows how the grasslands and monasteries of the eastern Tibetan Plateau meet the oasis cities of the Silk Road, finishing with enough time for Dunhuang.

A foreign licence or an International Driving Permit on its own does not authorise driving in mainland China. Eligible visitors must obtain the locally issued Chinese temporary driving permit before taking the wheel. Permit handling, rental eligibility, road access and the final overnight plan are reconfirmed for your passport, licence, travel dates and chosen vehicle before any non-refundable booking is made.
Why this VeroTrip road trip is different
Travellers who want cultural and landscape contrast with moderate high-altitude exposure. It suits confident drivers who prefer an overland story to a flight between Chengdu and Dunhuang. The route enters high grassland but not the Tibet Autonomous Region. Local rules, weather and foreign-guest hotel acceptance still require current confirmation.
Choose between supported self-drive and a private professional-driver version. The final proposal names the vehicle class, number of seats after luggage, insurance scope, deposit, mileage policy, tolls, fuel, one-way fee, roadside support and the person responsible for each remote sector. We do not hide those decisions behind “vehicle included”.
Best time, pace and road conditions
Late May to October is the core window. Spring snow and summer rain affect plateau roads, while Dunhuang can be hot and busy in midsummer. Daily distances are planning estimates, not promises of arrival time. Road works, weather, queues, park reservations and hotel access can change the operating route.
Who should choose self-drive—and who should not
Self-drive works best for guests who are comfortable reading traffic situations through a bilingual navigation setup, sharing driving and accepting local parking and toll routines. Choose the professional-driver version if you want every traveller to enjoy the scenery, if only one person is confident behind the wheel, or if the itinerary includes a particularly demanding remote sector. A mixed solution is also possible.

Daily Itinerary
Private pickup and a route briefing covering altitude, permits, one-way vehicle logistics and the driver/support division. Driving decision: Rest at low altitude before driving.
Complete the temporary driving permit process, inspect the vehicle and practise navigation, toll and parking routines. Driving decision: Keep the original foreign licence with the temporary permit when driving.
Leave the basin for the upper Min River corridor and Taoping. A village visit is guided with respect for residents and earthquake-recovery history. Driving decision: The short first sector supports gradual altitude gain.
Climb toward Hongyuan’s grasslands, stopping at safe overlooks and arriving before dark. The afternoon programme remains light so travellers can monitor altitude response. Driving decision: A lower overnight alternative is kept if needed.
Drive across open grassland toward Langmusi, where Sichuan and Gansu cultural geographies meet. Livestock and changing weather make daylight driving essential. Driving decision: Monastery access and etiquette are checked locally.
Continue to Xiahe on a relatively short sector, leaving time for rest and an orientation walk. Driving decision: The slower day is intentional after two plateau drives.
Visit Labrang with a guide, then head toward Xining, using Kanbula only when road and park timing work. Driving decision: A direct route protects against poor weather.
Cross toward the Hexi Corridor with mountain scenery and planned rest stops. The exact road follows current pass conditions. Driving decision: Menyuan flowers are treated as seasonal, subject to conditions.
See Zhangye Danxia at a useful time, then drive about 240 km to Jiayuguan. Driving decision: A pre-booked ticket prevents a late, rushed entry.
Explore Jiayuguan Pass and a selected Great Wall section with historical context. The car largely stays parked. Driving decision: The page distinguishes restored visitor areas from original remains.
Drive roughly 380 km through the Gobi to Dunhuang with two formal breaks. Driving decision: Water and sun protection are carried in the vehicle.
Visit Mogao Caves with the available official ticket category, then explore the museum or old town. Driving decision: Mogao tickets are limited and must be confirmed before the route is sold.
Use a local driver or the supported vehicle for the long desert outing to Yumen Pass and Yadan. The plan responds to heat, wind and opening hours. Driving decision: Do not combine the excursion with a late-night departure.
Transfer to the airport or railway station after returning the one-way vehicle according to the confirmed contract. Driving decision: One-way fees and return location are disclosed before payment.
