A foreign licence or an International Driving Permit on its own does not authorise driving in mainland China. Eligible visitors must obtain the locally issued Chinese temporary driving permit before taking the wheel. Permit handling, rental eligibility, road access and the final overnight plan are reconfirmed for your passport, licence, travel dates and chosen vehicle before any non-refundable booking is made.

Curious repeat visitors who want regional variety and are comfortable changing hotels. It works especially well with a professional driver, though eligible guests may self-drive supported sectors. The title refers to a heritage-focused road trip, not a claim that every stop is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. UNESCO status is named only for properties formally inscribed, and park marketing myths are kept separate from confirmed facts.
Choose between supported self-drive and a private professional-driver version. The final proposal names the vehicle class, number of seats after luggage, insurance scope, deposit, mileage policy, tolls, fuel, one-way fee, roadside support and the person responsible for each remote sector. We do not hide those decisions behind “vehicle included”.
Best time, pace and road conditions
April to June and September to November generally offer the most comfortable temperatures. Summer rain can affect karst parks and the Yangtze corridor; winter daylight shortens driving windows. Daily distances are planning estimates, not promises of arrival time. Road works, weather, queues, park reservations and hotel access can change the operating route.
Who should choose self-drive—and who should not
Self-drive works best for guests who are comfortable reading traffic situations through a bilingual navigation setup, sharing driving and accepting local parking and toll routines. Choose the professional-driver version if you want every traveller to enjoy the scenery, if only one person is confident behind the wheel, or if the itinerary includes a particularly demanding remote sector. A mixed solution is also possible.

Daily Itinerary
Meet the team, check in and check the 18-day route, driving division and luggage plan. Driving decision: No self-driving after a long-haul arrival.
Complete permit and vehicle formalities, then visit a panda base or neighbourhood market with a guide. Driving decision: The buffer prevents paperwork from pushing the road trip into the night.
Drive to Leshan and visit the Giant Buddha using the walking or boat option suited to mobility and river conditions. Driving decision: Stay locally rather than racing onward.
Continue to Yibin with a food, river or old-town stop. The shorter day creates room for an unhurried southern Sichuan experience. Driving decision: Alcohol tasting is never paired with driving.
Use local transport where practical for the Bamboo Sea and keep the main vehicle parked. Driving decision: Visibility and trail access depend on rain.
Split the long transfer with a proper lunch and a practical overnight chosen according to road conditions. Driving decision: This avoids a forced late arrival inside the scenic area.
Explore the open Wulong karst sites with advance tickets and realistic walking expectations. Driving decision: Elevators and shuttle routes are planned for mobility needs.
Drive toward Zhangjiajie but stop at a sensible intermediate city if traffic makes a direct run excessive. Driving decision: The exact overnight is fixed before booking.
Complete the shorter drive and use the afternoon for Tianmen Mountain or a relaxed city orientation depending on tickets and weather. Driving decision: Do not stack two major parks into one day.
Spend a full day in the core scenic area with a crowd-aware sequence and clear shuttle plan. Driving decision: The guide separates geological facts from film-inspired marketing.
Choose the Grand Canyon, a second forest-park sector or a Tujia cultural programme based on weather, mobility and interest. Driving decision: Glass-bridge entry is optional, not compulsory.

Complete the final road sector to Xi’an with two breaks, return the vehicle and keep the evening free. Driving decision: No same-night international departure.
Transfer for departure or begin a separately scheduled Xi’an stay for the Terracotta Warriors, City Wall and food culture. Driving decision: The extension is not falsely counted as part of an 18-day road programme.
