See how a crowded Yunnan wish list becomes a well-paced 10-day route by balancing transfers, altitude, old towns, villages and mountain time.

This planning example shows how a long wish list becomes a workable 10-day Yunnan route. It is an illustrative route-design case, not a customer testimonial and not a fixed tour for sale. The goal is to make the decisions visible: what stays, what moves and what must be removed.

A useful planning conversation starts with pace, altitude and travel time before choosing individual attractions.

The Original Wish List

The imaginary travellers have ten calendar days, arrive in Kunming and depart from Lijiang. They want Kunming, Dali, Shaxi, Lijiang, Tiger Leaping Gorge, Shangri-La and Yuanyang. They prefer comfortable hotels, regional food, moderate walking and no consecutive late arrivals. Every place is worthwhile, but the complete list is not. Yuanyang lies south of Kunming while the rest of the route moves northwest. Including it would add a separate road chapter, at least two nights and an eventual return north.

Step 1: Protect the Direction of Travel

The clean direction is Kunming → Dali → Shaxi → Lijiang → Shangri-La, with departure from Lijiang if the available flight works. This avoids returning to Kunming only to use the same transport corridor again. Yuanyang is removed and saved for a southern Yunnan journey with Jianshui. Removing a good place is often the decision that makes the rest of a trip feel good.

Step 2: Count Usable Days

Day 1 is an international or domestic arrival and cannot safely carry major sightseeing. Day 10 includes the flight home or onward. The route therefore has eight reliable travel days, not ten full sightseeing days.

Step 3: Place the Altitude Gradually

Kunming and Dali sit at moderate plateau elevations, Lijiang is higher and Shangri-La is above 3,000 metres. The route rises gradually. A traveller with relevant health concerns should seek medical advice; no sequence guarantees that everyone will feel well.

The Revised 10-Day Outline

Day Base Planning purpose
1 Kunming Arrival, mobile payment and an easy first evening
2 Kunming One major cultural or landscape visit without a same-day train
3 Dali Morning rail journey, hotel transfer and a light old-town evening
4 Dali Erhai-area villages, Bai cultural context and unhurried food
5 Shaxi Road transfer through the Tea Horse Road landscape
6 Lijiang Shaxi morning, then road to Lijiang with an easy evening
7 Lijiang Baisha, Naxi heritage or a mountain day chosen for the weather
8 Shangri-La Tiger Leaping Gorge stop or direct rail, depending on fitness and weather
9 Shangri-La One full highland day with a flexible pace
10 Departure Return rail or flight connection only when protected by adequate time

The exact departure gateway determines whether Day 10 returns to Lijiang or uses a Shangri-La flight. That decision must be made with the real flight schedule, not assumed from the outline.

Why Shaxi Stays

Shaxi creates road travel, but it connects Dali and Lijiang rather than forming a separate detour. It also changes the rhythm of the trip: a smaller town, a quieter evening and Tea Horse Road context between two famous destinations. Two nights would be better for deeper exploration, but one night can work when it is treated as a meaningful transfer chapter.

Why Tiger Leaping Gorge Remains Conditional

The travellers asked for moderate walking, not a multi-day hike. A roadside gorge visit can fit between Lijiang and Shangri-La, while the high trail would require a different luggage, fitness and accommodation plan. Rain, trail access and traffic can still change the choice. The route therefore keeps two versions rather than promising both.

What the Route Does Not Promise

  • Guaranteed mountain visibility
  • A demanding activity immediately after reaching Shangri-La
  • Every famous attraction in Kunming, Dali or Lijiang
  • Specific seasonal flowers or agricultural conditions
  • A late connection that leaves no recovery option

Hotel Decisions

In Dali and Lijiang, the travellers want atmosphere but also easy luggage handling. The shortlist should therefore identify the vehicle drop-off point and actual walking distance. In Shangri-La, reliable heating, hot water and easy access matter more than a decorative courtyard. Read where to stay in Yunnan.

Transport Decisions

The plan uses rail where it saves road time and private road travel where the journey itself connects meaningful stops. The train timetable must be translated into hotel-to-hotel time. See the Yunnan train guide.

Two Alternative Versions

Family or Older-Traveller Version

Remove Shaxi or Shangri-La, add another Dali night and avoid a same-day gorge stop. This version reduces hotel changes and protects easier vehicle access.

Active Version

Remove one city sightseeing day and add a two-day Tiger Leaping Gorge hike with luggage transfer. This becomes a materially different itinerary and should be prepared separately rather than squeezed into the original outline.

What Information a Planner Needs

  • Exact arrival and departure flights
  • Group size and room arrangement
  • Walking ability and relevant altitude concerns
  • Hotel style and luggage quantity
  • Food, cultural, photography or hiking priorities
  • Activities that are optional rather than essential

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a bookable tour itinerary?

No. It is a transparent planning example. Compare current Yunnan private tours or request a new proposal for actual dates.

Why not include Yuanyang?

It sits in a different route family and deserves at least two nights. Adding it would weaken the northwest journey.

Can the route skip Kunming?

Yes, if flights allow arrival in Dali or Lijiang and the route still rises sensibly toward Shangri-La.

Is one night in Shaxi enough?

It can work as a meaningful road chapter, but two nights are better for Shibaoshan, villages and a slower pace.

Should Tiger Leaping Gorge be a day visit or hike?

That depends on fitness, weather and luggage. The two options need different daily plans.

Can this route be shortened to eight days?

Yes, by removing Shaxi or Shangri-La, not by compressing every stop.
