A foreign licence or an International Driving Permit on its own does not authorise driving in mainland China. Eligible visitors must obtain the locally issued Chinese temporary driving permit before taking the wheel. Permit handling, rental eligibility, road access and the final overnight plan are reconfirmed for your passport, licence, travel dates and chosen vehicle before any non-refundable booking is made.

Why this VeroTrip road trip is different

History and landscape travellers who want varied driving rather than extreme off-road terrain. The route includes several long transit days but uses mostly established highways and comfortable city bases. This is a broad regional drive, so the page states real road time and does not guarantee sunrises, flowers or clear mountain views. Scenic stops are sequenced around daylight and driver fatigue.

Choose between supported self-drive and a private professional-driver version. The final proposal names the vehicle class, number of seats after luggage, insurance scope, deposit, mileage policy, tolls, fuel, one-way fee, roadside support and the person responsible for each remote sector. We do not hide those decisions behind “vehicle included”.

Best time, pace and road conditions

May to October is usually practical. Menyuan’s famous flowering season is brief, while high plateau weather and desert heat vary sharply; the itinerary remains worthwhile outside the flower window. Daily distances are planning estimates, not promises of arrival time. Road works, weather, queues, park reservations and hotel access can change the operating route.

Who should choose self-drive—and who should not

Self-drive works best for guests who are comfortable reading traffic situations through a bilingual navigation setup, sharing driving and accepting local parking and toll routines. Choose the professional-driver version if you want every traveller to enjoy the scenery, if only one person is confident behind the wheel, or if the itinerary includes a particularly demanding remote sector. A mixed solution is also possible.

Daily Itinerary

Meet the local team, check into a central hotel and check the 2,000-plus-kilometre loop. The first evening is deliberately light so jet-lagged travellers are not asked to drive. Driving decision: Original licence documents are checked before the permit appointment.

Complete temporary-permit administration, inspect the rental car and practise toll-gate, navigation and parking routines. Use the remaining time for the City Wall or Muslim Quarter with a guide. Driving decision: A second Xi’an night protects the schedule if processing takes longer than expected.

Day 3, Xi'an to Tianshui, on the 13-Day Qinghai, Gansu & Ningxia Silk Road Self-Drive Loop
Day 3: Xi'an to Tianshui. GoChinaHoliday supported China self-drive itinerary.

Drive approximately 340 km west to Tianshui, using expressways for an easy first full day. Arrive with daylight for a local meal and briefing on the next day’s plateau ascent. Driving decision: Fuel, toll and rest-stop instructions are provided in English.

Day 4, Tianshui to Xiahe, on the 13-Day Qinghai, Gansu & Ningxia Silk Road Self-Drive Loop
Day 4: Tianshui to Xiahe. GoChinaHoliday supported China self-drive itinerary.

Continue toward Xiahe through changing loess and mountain landscapes. The long drive is broken with a proper lunch and an optional roadside cultural stop that does not force a night arrival. Driving decision: The group gains altitude gradually and avoids alcohol on arrival.

Day 5, Xiahe to Xining via Kanbula, on the 13-Day Qinghai, Gansu & Ningxia Silk Road Self-Drive Loop
Day 5: Xiahe to Xining via Kanbula. GoChinaHoliday supported China self-drive itinerary.

Visit Labrang in the morning with respectful monastery guidance, then drive toward Kanbula and Xining. The scenic detour is kept only when road and park timing make it worthwhile. Driving decision: A direct route remains available in bad weather.

Day 6, Xining to Zhangye via Menyuan, on the 13-Day Qinghai, Gansu & Ningxia Silk Road Self-Drive Loop
Day 6: Xining to Zhangye via Menyuan. GoChinaHoliday supported China self-drive itinerary.

Cross toward the Hexi Corridor on a high scenic road, with Menyuan used for broad mountain-and-field views. Outside the flowering period, the day focuses on the Qilian landscape rather than pretending the fields are in bloom. Driving decision: Weather and pass conditions determine the final alignment.

Day 7, Zhangye Danxia and local heritage, on the 13-Day Qinghai, Gansu & Ningxia Silk Road Self-Drive Loop
Day 7: Zhangye Danxia and local heritage. GoChinaHoliday supported China self-drive itinerary.

Keep the car largely parked and visit Zhangye Danxia at a timed entry, plus the Giant Buddha Temple if opening hours fit. This rest day improves both photography and driver recovery. Driving decision: Sunset is weather-dependent and always subject to conditions.

Day 8, Zhangye to Wuwei, on the 13-Day Qinghai, Gansu & Ningxia Silk Road Self-Drive Loop
Day 8: Zhangye to Wuwei. GoChinaHoliday supported China self-drive itinerary.

Follow the Hexi Corridor east for about 240 km, with an interpretive stop that explains why this narrow passage linked central China and Central Asia. Arrive early enough for Wuwei’s museum or local market. Driving decision: The day avoids unnecessary back-road detours.

Day 9, Wuwei to Zhongwei, on the 13-Day Qinghai, Gansu & Ningxia Silk Road Self-Drive Loop
Day 9: Wuwei to Zhongwei. GoChinaHoliday supported China self-drive itinerary.

Drive about 270 km toward the Yellow River and desert edge. Choose a practical riverside or desert-view experience based on wind and temperature rather than cramming several ticketed attractions together. Driving decision: Sand activities use site-authorised operators and equipment.

Day 10, Zhongwei to Yinchuan, on the 13-Day Qinghai, Gansu & Ningxia Silk Road Self-Drive Loop
Day 10: Zhongwei to Yinchuan. GoChinaHoliday supported China self-drive itinerary.

A short 180 km drive leaves time for the Western Xia Imperial Tombs or a winery visit selected to match the group. Non-drinkers receive an equally substantive cultural option. Driving decision: The driver never combines alcohol tasting with driving.

Day 11, Yinchuan to Guyuan, on the 13-Day Qinghai, Gansu & Ningxia Silk Road Self-Drive Loop
Day 11: Yinchuan to Guyuan. GoChinaHoliday supported China self-drive itinerary.

Travel south through Ningxia, adding a museum, Great Wall remnant or local food stop according to opening times. Guyuan breaks the return journey and reveals a less-visited layer of Silk Road history. Driving decision: This is not marketed as a filler night.

Day 12, Guyuan to Xi'an, on the 13-Day Qinghai, Gansu & Ningxia Silk Road Self-Drive Loop
Day 12: Guyuan to Xi'an. GoChinaHoliday supported China self-drive itinerary.

Complete the loop with roughly 400 km of highway driving and scheduled rest stops. The vehicle is returned before the evening programme, with extra time for traffic or inspection. Driving decision: Do not book an international departure for the same evening.

Day 13, Depart Xi'an, on the 13-Day Qinghai, Gansu & Ningxia Silk Road Self-Drive Loop
Day 13: Depart Xi'an. GoChinaHoliday supported China self-drive itinerary.

Transfer to the airport or railway station, or add a separate Xi’an extension for the Terracotta Warriors. A same-day attraction visit is offered only when departure timing is safe. Driving decision: Ticket time, terminal and luggage needs determine pickup.

Frequently Asked Questions

This loop concentrates on Qinghai, Gansu and Ningxia and returns the car in Xi’an. It prioritises Xiahe, Kanbula, Zhangye, Wuwei, Zhongwei and Yinchuan rather than continuing across Xinjiang.

No. The bloom varies by year and weather. We only describe fields as a seasonal possibility and make the Qilian mountain drive, villages and landscape the core value of the day.

Yes, but not as a rushed day trip. Add at least three days or choose the Eastern Tibetan Plateau to Silk Road itinerary, which finishes in Dunhuang and gives the city enough time.

No. A foreign licence or IDP alone is not enough for mainland China. Eligible short-stay visitors need a Chinese temporary driving permit. We check the current local process and your documents before confirming the rental.

Usually your passport and entry documents, original valid overseas driving licence, an accepted Chinese translation, photos or other local application material, plus the rental paperwork. Requirements vary by city and licence, so we provide a personalised checklist.

The proposal itemises vehicle class, insurance coverage and exclusions, deposit or pre-authorisation, mileage, tolls, fuel, parking, one-way fee, support vehicle and roadside assistance. Nothing is assumed from the word “rental”.

We check conditions before and during the trip. The route manager uses the written fallback described in your proposal and discusses any material change with you; safety and legal access take priority over ticking off a named pass.

Yes. We plan seating and luggage for the whole party, and can add a support vehicle or professional driver so companions are not stranded when the registered drivers need a rest.

Do not rely on a single overseas app or card. We prepare bilingual navigation, offline location names, local payment options and toll/fuel instructions, then test them during vehicle handover.

We normally confirm a vehicle category and critical features, not an exact model. We confirm seats after luggage, transmission, child seats, winter equipment and any 4x4 requirement in writing.
