Overview

Western Tibet needs time as well as distance. This proposed Lhasa loop follows the southern corridor towards Everest, Saga and the Kailash region, then continues to the ruined hilltop kingdom of Guge near Zanda. It returns along the established southern approach rather than adding a remote northern crossing simply to draw a larger loop. The focus is the western cultural landscape; a Kailash kora trek is not included.

Trip style: Private guided ride for experienced motorcyclists. Adjust the pace, rest days and overnight stops to your group before booking.

Rider documents and motorcycle arrangements

Tell us whether you intend to bring a foreign-registered motorcycle or use a motorcycle registered in China. These arrangements have different requirements. A rental-car temporary permit must not be assumed to authorise a rental motorcycle. Read our motorcycle licences, guides and permits guide before paying for a motorcycle or arranging flights.

Compare the existing 10-day Everest and northern Ali route if the lake corridor matters more to you than the Guge extension.

Make the route fit your group

Tell VeroTrip which motorcycles you ride, your recent multi-day experience, passenger plans and comfortable daily riding time. Your trip proposal sets out the motorcycle arrangement, guiding, luggage support, hotels and return logistics before you commit.

Explore VeroTrip motorcycle tours or send us your riding plans. If you will use an overseas-registered bike, read our guide to bringing your own motorcycle into China.

Daily Itinerary

Potala Palace in Lhasa

Transfer to the hotel and rest after arrival. Meet the team for a short introduction rather than a full sightseeing programme. Keep the day adaptable to how you feel, and confirm the coming document appointments without promising that all preparation can be completed immediately.

Overnight: Lhasa.

Jokhang Temple in Lhasa
Jokhang Temple in Lhasa

Choose a measured city visit according to your condition and confirmed tickets. Barkhor and the Jokhang area can introduce the city without adding a long excursion. The priority is a comfortable start; sightseeing can move within the Lhasa stay if more rest is needed.

Overnight: Lhasa.

Finish the confirmed rider and vehicle requirements, check the motorcycle and review the remote-stage support plan. Any familiarisation ride takes place only when lawful and appropriate. Extra preparation or acclimatisation days may be necessary before leaving the city.

Overnight: Lhasa.

Yamdrok Lake shoreline

Ride along the approved southern corridor towards Yamdrok Lake and Gyantse. Stop at managed viewpoints with safe parking. Weather and road operation determine the final pauses, while the overnight in Gyantse keeps the first long mountain stage from becoming excessively crowded with visits.

Overnight: Gyantse.

Kumbum at Gyantse
Kumbum at Gyantse

Allow for a confirmed Gyantse visit before continuing to Shigatse. The shorter transfer creates time to prepare the motorcycle and supplies for the western stages. Check the Everest-area access plan and the next overnight base with the guide before departure the following morning.

Overnight: Shigatse.

Tashilhunpo Monastery in Shigatse

Follow the approved road towards the Himalayan approach. The team coordinates fuel, checks and rest stops, keeping the day focused on reaching the overnight base. Hotel standards and the exact village depend on current operation and the accepted route.

Overnight: Tingri or confirmed alternative.

Mount Everest viewed from Rongbuk

Visit the permitted Everest north-side area when access and conditions allow. Leave motorcycles at designated parking if required and use the arranged local transport. Return to the confirmed base after the visit, without treating sunset, summit visibility or access to a climbing camp as included guarantees.

Overnight: Tingri or confirmed alternative.

Continue west towards Saga through the approved road corridor. The day’s stops are practical as well as scenic, with fuel and arrival time taking priority. Review the longer western section with the team and keep luggage and essential documents readily accessible.

Overnight: Saga.

Travel towards the Zhongba area, using an intermediate overnight to break the distance to the Kailash region. The precise base follows current accommodation and access arrangements. Limited services make advance fuel and meal planning more useful than relying on an unconfirmed stop along the road.

Overnight: Zhongba area.

Continue west towards Darchen. A Lake Manasarovar stop is considered within the approved day plan and current scenic-area arrangements. Settle into the overnight base before discussing the following day’s local visits; off-road riding on lake shores or protected land is not part of the trip.

Overnight: Darchen or confirmed alternative.

Keep a day for rest and confirmed visits around the Kailash region. The journey does not include the multi-day kora, and motorcycles are not a substitute for a trekking programme. Any walk or transfer is agreed around access, available services and your condition.

Overnight: Darchen or confirmed alternative.

Ride towards Zanda on the approved connection, allowing for the sustained highland travel. The surrounding earth formations are a major part of the landscape, but stops must use permitted viewpoints. Reach the town with enough time to rest before the cultural visits planned for the following day.

Overnight: Zanda.

Visit Guge’s ruins and Tholing Monastery according to the confirmed local programme. Park where directed and follow site rules, including any restrictions on interior photography. This second night in Zanda leaves room to see the western heritage sites without combining them with a long riding transfer.

Overnight: Zanda.

Return along the confirmed road towards the Kailash-region base. This southern return is intentional and avoids assuming access to a remote northern shortcut. The team reassesses the remaining road conditions and can add an overnight if the group needs a slower finish.

Overnight: Darchen or confirmed alternative.

Begin the return east, stopping overnight in the Zhongba area to divide the distance to Saga. The precise base follows the approved road and available accommodation. Keep the day focused on a daylight arrival, with time to check the motorcycle before the next stage.

Overnight: Zhongba area.

Continue to Saga with the group, using the planned fuel and meal stops. The additional overnight on the western return leaves more space for rest and avoids relying on a single long Darchen–Saga day. Review the road towards Shigatse with the team after arrival.

Overnight: Saga.

Continue towards Shigatse on the approved return corridor. Confirm the day’s fuel and meal stops before departure and allow for checks or road controls. Arrival in a larger town creates time for a fuller motorcycle inspection before the last riding stage.

Overnight: Shigatse.

Return to Lhasa, then complete the motorcycle inspection and handover under the agreed terms. Keep the evening free of a departing flight. Any damage, deposit administration or transport arrangement is handled according to the signed agreement rather than a blanket promise on the itinerary page.

Overnight: Lhasa.

Transfer for the confirmed onward flight or train. If the road itinerary has been extended during planning, book transport to match the revised final night. A flexible departure arrangement is particularly valuable for a journey reaching far into western Tibet.

Overnight: Tour ends.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. It is a motorcycle journey to the wider Kailash and Manasarovar region, continuing to Guge. A kora needs a separate multi-day walking programme, suitable preparation and the relevant local arrangements.

The western focus is Darchen, the Manasarovar region and Zanda–Guge. The existing shorter circuit focuses on Everest and the northern lake corridor around Coqen, Nyima and Bange.

It makes the western heritage journey the main purpose without assuming that a remote northern connection will be available. A different return needs a separate feasibility review and usually more time.

No. The approved route, opening arrangements, road condition and realistic riding time determine the visits. A named place on a map is not confirmation of foreign visitor or motorcycle access.

No uniform hotel category is promised. Facilities in remote towns can be simple and availability changes. Ask for the proposed accommodation and any alternatives in the quotation.

The final programme can add preparation, rest or return-stage nights. Agree how changes, additional support and onward travel are handled before booking.
