Using a motorcycle registered in China
A Chinese registration plate does not establish your right to ride the motorcycle. You still need Chinese driving permission covering the correct motorcycle category. Guide and travel arrangements also depend on the destination and the type of tour. A rental agreement or a local companion cannot replace the required driving permission.

The correct permission to ride
An International Driving Permit does not authorise driving in mainland China. For an eligible rider bringing a motorcycle temporarily into the country, the Chinese temporary driving permission must match both the motorcycle category on the overseas licence and the motorcycle being brought in.

The standard temporary driving permit for rented Chinese vehicles covers small cars and automatic small cars, categories C1 and C2. It does not automatically authorise riding a rented motorcycle. A temporarily imported motorcycle needs customs entry formalities and Chinese temporary vehicle documents. An accompanying vehicle can carry luggage and agreed equipment and provide space for a rider who needs to stop riding. Its role, staffing and equipment should be specified in the itinerary. Motorcycle recovery, mechanical assistance and emergency transport need clear arrangements rather than assumptions.
For a remote or mountain journey, agree the daily distances, rest stops, communications and contingency plan before departure. Support equipment should match the route, and the vehicle must have enough legal passenger capacity for the planned team.
