Plan a Chengdu to Lijiang road trip via Ya’an, Xichang and Lugu Lake: 10 days, 9 nights, mountain-road choices, hotel access and one-way car arrangements.

A Southern Silk Road road trip from Chengdu to Lijiang works best as a journey through several different landscapes, with proper overnight breaks between them. For a first visit, allow 10 days and 9 nights: Chengdu, Pingle, Ya’an, Hanyuan, Xichang, Yanyuan, Lugu Lake and Lijiang. This example gives Lugu Lake two nights and finishes with a night in Lijiang before departure. Choose 12 days if you want full days in both Xichang and Lijiang.

The main decision is the mountain-road section west of Xichang. A stop in Yanyuan divides it into two travel days, but does not remove the bends. If your group dislikes winding roads, use separate Chengdu and Lijiang stays and visit Lugu Lake from Lijiang instead. Arrange that intercity connection before booking either end of the journey.

What does “Southern Silk Road” mean on this trip?

The Southern Silk Road was a network of trade routes linking Sichuan with Yunnan and lands farther west. The Baoshan government’s historical account describes the Lingguan route through the Ya’an and Xichang regions, with routes converging around Dali before continuing through western Yunnan. It gives useful context for the first part of this journey.

This driving itinerary uses modern roads. Lugu Lake and Lijiang form a scenic and cultural extension; the whole itinerary should not be read as the precise course of one ancient caravan trail. Pingle’s old trading-town setting is a good introduction to the theme. You can then choose whether tea, local towns or the lake deserves most of your time, without trying to trace every historic branch.

Choose 7, 10 or 12 days

Ten days is a workable starting point for travellers who enjoy the journey between places. Seven days calls for a different transport plan, while twelve days gives two useful pauses rather than adding more distant attractions.

Time available Suggested structure Choose it when
7 days / 6 nights Chengdu 2 nights; Lijiang 1; Lugu Lake 2; Lijiang 1. Connect Chengdu and Lijiang using transport available for your dates. You want both regions but fewer consecutive driving days. Skip Ya’an, Hanyuan, Xichang and Yanyuan.
10 days / 9 nights Chengdu 2; Ya’an 1; Hanyuan 1; Xichang 1; Yanyuan 1; Lugu Lake 2; Lijiang 1. You want the continuous road journey and accept several one-night stops.
12 days / 11 nights Add one night in Xichang and one in Lijiang to the 10-day plan. You want a full Qionghai day and a full Lijiang day without extending transfer days.

The seven-day version still includes winding roads between Lijiang and Lugu Lake. It reduces the length of the overall road journey; it does not make the lake a motorway destination. For a family that wants very little driving, keep Chengdu and Lijiang and leave the lake for another trip.

A 10-day Chengdu to Lijiang itinerary

The overnight total is nine: two in Chengdu, one each in Ya’an, Hanyuan, Xichang and Yanyuan, two at Lugu Lake, and one in Lijiang. The extra night in Yanyuan is a practical staging choice. Select a hotel with easy vehicle access rather than adding an outlying attraction just to fill the afternoon.

Nine overnight stays, including a staging night in Yanyuan. Illustrative sequence; not a navigation map or driving timetable.
Day and overnight base Main plan Keep the day manageable
1 — Chengdu Arrive, check in and settle into the city. Keep sightseeing optional after a long arrival journey.
2 — Chengdu Choose one main visit and a neighbourhood or teahouse walk. Finish vehicle arrangements and buy practical road supplies.
3 — Ya’an Drive from Chengdu via Pingle for an old-town stop, then continue to Ya’an. Choose the town walk; leave out a second major excursion.
4 — Hanyuan Consider a short Mengding Mountain tea-country visit, then drive to Hanyuan. A full mountain walk needs a different day plan. Skip the visit if weather or departure time makes it awkward.
5 — Xichang Continue south on the main road corridor to Xichang. Keep Qionghai to a short arrival walk if time permits.
6 — Yanyuan Take the established road corridor west from Xichang to Yanyuan. Allow for winding sections, slower traffic and proper breaks.
7 — Lugu Lake Continue to the lake and the pre-arranged hotel. Confirm the entry side and parking pin; keep the evening local.
8 — Lugu Lake Spend a full day around a small selection of lakeside areas. Choose a short walk and optional activity instead of a compulsory full circuit.
9 — Lijiang Drive to Lijiang and meet the hotel at its agreed vehicle access point. Leave major sightseeing for a longer stay; avoid a same-day flight.
10 — Depart Lijiang Complete the agreed vehicle handover and departure transfer. Separate car-return time from station or airport check-in time.

For the twelve-day version, spend Days 5–6 in Xichang, move the subsequent travel days back by one, and use Days 10–11 for Lijiang before departing on Day 12. If flights require a different entry or exit date, rebuild the overnight list first. Do not squeeze the same stops into fewer days by treating an arrival evening as a full visit.

Chengdu, Pingle and Mengding: choose one focus per day

Use the first full Chengdu day for the experience that matters most to your group. A panda visit, a museum visit and a long city food walk each bring their own reservation, walking and meal requirements. Choose one main appointment and fit a nearby neighbourhood around it. This also leaves time to resolve luggage, child-seat or rental paperwork before the intercity driving begins.

Two opening nights in Chengdu leave a full day before the road journey begins.

On Day 3, Pingle works as a stop between Chengdu and Ya’an. Meet the driver at a named parking area, decide how long you want to walk, and return to the same pickup point. Its riverside streets make more sense as a focused town visit than as a checklist of every surrounding attraction. An outdoor town walk can be shortened if rain arrives; a reserved activity may have separate cancellation conditions.

Mengding Mountain on Day 4 is an option for travellers interested in tea and walking. Decide whether you want a short accessible visit or a substantial climb before fixing the rest of the day. Steps, exposed sections and the distance back to parking matter more than the length of a route described by a fit hiker. Ask the operator which entrance, transport and walking section will actually be available on your date. Do not build the onward drive around an old shuttle timetable or a social-media medal challenge.

If you want a long Mengding walk, add a Ya’an night or drop the Pingle stop and rearrange the two days. If weather makes the mountain unsuitable, keep the Hanyuan overnight and choose a shorter local stop where conditions allow. Jiaoding Mountain is a separate excursion: obtain the current opening notice and lawful vehicle-access arrangement before adding it. It is outside the basic overnight plan.

Xichang to Lugu Lake: the choice that changes the trip

The base itinerary follows the existing road corridor through Yanyuan, with a night in the county town before continuing to the lake. It gives the driver and passengers an overnight break between stages. Both days still need daylight, patient driving and room for delays. A navigation estimate is a starting point for discussion, not a promise of arrival.

Do not assume the new Xichang–Shangri-La expressway has replaced this journey. The operator’s April 2026 Yanyuan Tunnel update and July 2026 construction report describe work in progress. Plan with roads actually open for your departure, and check current traffic-police notices before leaving Xichang.

Your group’s priority Route decision What must change
A continuous overland trip Use Xichang–Yanyuan–Lugu Lake, divided by the Yanyuan night. Accept winding roads and keep the two transfer days light.
Passengers dislike repeated bends Compare a longer approach using the main expressway network toward the Lijiang side, or the seven-day split trip. Recalculate the whole journey, overnight stop and backtracking. Do not assume “more motorway” means a shorter day.
Road restrictions or poor conditions Wait in a suitable town or use a route approved for the current conditions. Change hotel dates and omit activities; avoid an improvised night-time shortcut.
A historic trail or ferry detour Treat it as a separate proposal with a named crossing or access point. Confirm legal access, current operation, vehicle suitability and a land alternative before accepting it.

A motorcycle itinerary may use roads, ferry crossings and riding days that do not suit a family car. This plan does not depend on the Yalong River ferry used in some motorcycle programmes. Ask for the proposed car route in writing, including any ferry, unpaved approach or restricted road. If a replacement route changes the lake arrival side, update the hotel’s pickup instructions as well.

Book the lake stay around parking, meals and one full day

Lugu Lake lies across the Sichuan–Yunnan boundary. A lake name alone is not a useful pickup address: send the hotel’s Chinese name, map pin, province-side approach and parking location to the driver. If staying on the opposite side from your arrival, allow for the extra lakeside drive before check-in. Ask the admission provider how your passport and entry point will be handled; retain the booking and ticket records for any exit and re-entry.

At busy times, a convenient parking space can shape the whole stay. Confirm whether parking belongs to the hotel, is shared, or requires a separate transfer. Find out whether you can unload luggage at the building and how far the walk is from the vehicle. A room described as “lake view” does not establish step-free access, a lift, heating or a nearby evening meal.

Two nights leave one complete lake day. Choose a manageable lakeside area and return for a break rather than moving hotels to collect different views. If a boat outing is important, ask the licensed provider about operating conditions, duration, pickup, passenger limits and suitable life jackets, including the child’s size. Keep it optional when the weather is unsuitable.

The Yunnan Lugu Lake protection regulation prohibits swimming in the lake and restricts camping, barbecues and other activities in the ecological core area. Use designated visitor facilities and follow the rules on the side you visit. Do not treat an attractive shoreline as permission to picnic, camp or enter the water. For detailed base comparisons, use our Lijiang–Lugu Lake transport and overnight guide.

Foreign passports, vehicle arrangements and the final handover

Choose the transport arrangement before reserving the chain of hotels. With a car and driver, request the named vehicle, passenger and luggage capacity, seat belts, child seat if required, driver’s working arrangement, overnight costs and final drop-off. A driver is not automatically an English-speaking guide. If you need interpretation for cultural visits or food discussions, specify that separately.

Transport choices for a one-way journey from Chengdu to Lijiang
Agree the vehicle arrangement and Lijiang handover before reserving the route.

For self-drive, confirm the Chinese driving permission required for your circumstances and the rental company’s document, payment and insurance requirements. An overseas licence or International Driving Permit alone is not a substitute for the required mainland Chinese permission. Read the foreign-driver guide before committing to a car. This article’s example uses a car already available in mainland China; bringing a foreign-plated vehicle into China is a different procedure.

Obtain written acceptance of a Chengdu pickup and Lijiang return, including the actual branch, date, opening hours, deposit and one-way charge. With a driver, establish whether return or repositioning costs are included. If the proposed vehicle cannot finish in Lijiang, compare a revised transport arrangement before paying non-refundable hotel costs.

Before paying Ask for a specific answer If it does not work
Hotels at each overnight stop Foreign-passport registration arrangements, room access, parking and arrival contact. Use another named property in the same base or revise the night plan.
Vehicle and support Documents, insurance scope, child seat, luggage capacity, breakdown assistance and language support. Compare a suitable car with driver or separate regional transport.
Meals and prayer Dietary requirements, ingredients, kitchen practices and a private place to pray at agreed stops. Arrange suitable packed food and a different stop before departure.
Lijiang departure Hotel vehicle access, handover location and onward transfer. Keep the final night and adjust the departure connection.

Hotels handle accommodation registration for their guests; carry the original travel documents used for the booking. Confirm the property’s practical process before arrival, especially at a smaller staging town. For Muslim travellers, a non-pork dish does not by itself establish halal suitability. State whether you require halal meat, separate utensils or another arrangement, and agree on meal and prayer breaks that fit the driving day. Our Yunnan food, hotel and prayer guide explains the questions to ask.

Questions that help you decide

Can this road trip be done in eight days?

It can be shortened by removing stops, but the ten-day example should not simply be compressed. Reducing the Chengdu stay, combining mountain-road stages and departing immediately after the lake transfer changes the pace substantially. With eight days available, start from the seven-day split plan and add a night where your group will use it most.

Is a round trip from Chengdu easier?

It can simplify a rental return, but adds the journey back. Price and plan the return days before choosing it. A loop through western Sichuan’s higher mountains is a different itinerary with additional driving and altitude considerations, rather than a short add-on to this route.

What if we want more culture and less time in a car?

Compare the 13-day Chengdu and Yunnan private-tour outline. Its Chengdu-to-Dali connection and stays in Dali, Shaxi, Lijiang and Shangri-La offer a different regional sequence. Ask for the dated transport and service proposal; it is not the same route as this overland example.

Plan the route with VeroTrip

Send your dates, arrival and departure cities, number of travellers, children’s ages, luggage, driving preference and tolerance for winding roads through Plan My Trip. Include your must-see stop, walking limits, dietary needs and whether you need English-speaking guiding.

Ask for a proposal that identifies the overnight bases, road approach to the lake, vehicle arrangement, final handover and included services. The useful next step is to settle those choices together; individual hotel availability, admission arrangements and prices follow the agreed travel dates.
