Compare G317 and G318 through daily pace, cultural time, photo stops, hotel changes, road updates and the complete sleeping plan.

Updated 22 October 2026

For a first Sichuan–Tibet journey, start by comparing G318 if your priority is a continuous sequence of mountain scenery, Ranwu Lake, Bomi and Nyingchi before Lhasa. Consider G317 if you want to spend longer around Garze and Dege, with cultural visits taking priority over covering ground. Neither choice makes altitude, road controls or foreign-passport travel arrangements straightforward. Your approved route, overnight elevations and available days should decide the journey.

This G317 vs G318 road trip guide compares the two corridors between Chengdu and Lhasa. It does not describe the entire length of either national highway. The northern option follows G317 toward Nagqu, then connects south toward Lhasa; the southern option approaches Lhasa through Nyingchi. A route called “Sichuan–Tibet” may also add substantial side trips, so ask for the actual overnight list before comparing quotations.

G317 or G318: which journey fits your priorities?

Choose the places you most want time for, then remove any route that cannot meet your access, pacing or accommodation requirements. “More adventurous” is not a useful substitute for a workable plan.

Your priority G317 northern corridor G318 southern corridor
Places shaping the trip Garze, Dege, the Chamdo area and the approach to Nagqu Kangding, Litang, Ranwu, Bomi and Nyingchi
Time you want off the road Town visits, printing and religious heritage where access is permitted Lakes, forested valleys, viewpoints and selected walks
First highland journey Requires close attention to consecutive overnight elevations and recovery options Still crosses high country; its familiar name does not make it an easy introduction
Limited holiday time Consider a shorter western Sichuan journey instead of forcing a Lhasa finish Trim side trips before shortening rest stops or making arrival days longer
Current route decision Resolve the Dege–Jomda construction restriction before committing to a through journey Allow for controlled sections around Markam, Zogang and Basu

For G317, Dege deserves time because of its printing traditions and wider Kham cultural heritage. The county government’s account of Dege’s heritage describes the continuing use of carved printing blocks. It does not guarantee that every workshop, hall or religious site will admit visitors on your dates. Ask about the specific venue, opening arrangements and photography before adding it to a day.

For G318, the appeal is the changing landscape rather than a single landmark. Adding Daocheng Yading, Danba or Siguniang Mountain changes the travel sequence and the time available elsewhere. These places are not all roadside stops on one unbroken G318 drive. A named add-on should have its own transport and overnight allowance.

On the Lhasa–Nyingchi leg, ask whether the day follows the scenic national road or an expressway section. The choice changes the available stops and the time left for the next overnight, so specify the route when comparing proposals. Agree named lawful parking or viewing points in advance; a suggestion to pull over whenever the view looks good is not a stopping plan. Drone footage does not establish flight permission, and a photograph from one autumn week does not fix the colour or weather for your dates.

A person in maroon robes overlooks Litang and distant mountains from a monastery terrace
Litang on the southern corridor. Choose cultural visits for their own time and access arrangements rather than treating every stop as a roadside photograph.

Read the corridor as stages, not a fixed daily timetable

The sequences below show the main geographic decisions. They are not instructions to drive each row in one day, and none of the listed towns automatically becomes an overnight stop. Use them to check whether a proposed itinerary matches the route you intended to buy.

Stage G317 planning sequence G318 planning sequence
Leave Chengdu Wenchuan → Barkam/Maerkang → Luhuo Ya’an/Luding approach → Kangding → Xinduqiao
Western Sichuan Garze/Ganzi → Manigango → Dege Yajiang → Litang → Batang
Enter eastern Tibet Gangto crossing → Jomda/Jiangda → Chamdo/Qamdo area; construction may prevent the planned sequence Markam/Mangkang → Zogang/Zuogong → Basu/Baxoi
Continue west Riwoche/Leiwuqi → Dengqen/Dingqing → Baqen/Baqing → Sog/Suoxian → Nagqu Ranwu/Rawu → Bomi → Nyingchi/Linzhi
Reach Lhasa Turn south from the Nagqu area using the agreed connecting route Continue from Nyingchi using the agreed road and any separate lake visit

English spellings vary. Save the Chinese name and a map pin for each hotel and meeting point, particularly around Ganzi, Jiangda and Chamdo. “Chamdo” can mean the wider municipality, not necessarily a night in the central city. The booking sheet should give the actual town, property and arrival contact.

Compare plans by nights as well as days. Count the arrival night, every road night and the Lhasa nights; then check whether the departure day contains sightseeing or only a transfer. Reserve a separate contingency allowance before an inflexible onward flight. A delay day already filled with a paid excursion is not spare time.

Road restrictions can change the choice before you book

The Tibet transport department’s 9 October 2026 road report lists full-width construction control on G317 from K911+050 in Gongya, Dege, to K976+400 near Jomda, scheduled from 12 July to 30 November 2026. It also lists several G317 sections under partial-width controls through 31 December. On G318, specified sections in Markam, Zogang and Basu have partial-width controls scheduled through 31 December.

These are restrictions on named sections, not a declaration that either entire highway is closed. The report is a dated snapshot, not permission to travel on a later date. Ask the receiving operator to confirm the current release arrangements, permitted alternative and revised overnight stops before you pay for a through route. Do not turn a map app’s shortcut into a substitute itinerary.

If a northern through journey cannot be arranged, there are three practical choices: change dates; finish a shorter Sichuan trip before the affected section; or redesign the whole journey around the southern corridor. Switching highways may change permits, hotel nights, luggage handling and the final arrival date. Get those changes agreed together.

Separate Tibet permission, driving documents and border rules

A visa or visa exemption for China is not, by itself, permission for a foreign visitor to travel independently through the Tibet Autonomous Region. The Shannan culture and tourism bureau’s September 2026 guidance says foreign visitors must travel through a qualified travel agency with the required Tibet approval. Start with your nationality, entry status and exact route; ask the receiving agency what documents and lead time apply to you.

Arrangement What it covers What to obtain in writing
Entry to mainland China Your lawful entry and permitted stay Nationality-specific entry basis and enough remaining days for the journey
Tibet travel arrangement The foreign visitor’s approved itinerary and receiving arrangements Exact entry point, travel dates, destinations, guide and transport
Driving and vehicle documents Your eligibility to drive that vehicle in China Accepted licence class, rental permission or imported-vehicle requirements
Additional restricted-area or border arrangements Requirements arising from particular places or extensions Destination-specific documents and whether that extension can operate

Hiring a vehicle in Chengdu does not establish that you may drive it into Tibet. A foreign-registered car adds a separate set of entry, vehicle and route questions. Use the guide to driving in China as a foreigner to prepare those questions, then obtain confirmation for the actual vehicle and itinerary. A chauffeur-driven arrangement can avoid you personally driving; it does not remove the passenger’s travel requirements.

Border-area documents are a separate issue. The National Immigration Administration’s electronic border-permit notice gives different application channels for mainland residents and foreign nationals; the latter are directed to in-person applications. Do not assume a domestic visitor’s app instructions work for your passport or replace a Tibet travel arrangement.

The 27 August 2026 NIA announcement, effective 28 August, suspended electronic border-area permits for Shigatse following the Gyirong disaster. Its subject is that particular border-permit process. It is not a notice cancelling every Tibet travel permit. If adding Everest, a border destination or a Nepal crossing, ask about that extension separately; reaching Lhasa does not establish onward access.

Choose your sleeping plan before your sightseeing list

Both corridors need a deliberate altitude plan. Ask for the elevation of each actual hotel, not just the highest pass or the average elevation of a county. Compare the first high night, the increase from the previous night, repeated high nights and the practical route to lower ground. Reversing the trip is not automatically easier: flying to Lhasa changes how you first reach altitude.

The CDC’s altitude guidance advises gradual ascent and cautions against travelling directly from low altitude to a sleeping elevation around 2,750 metres in one day. Above 3,000 metres, its general guidance limits increases in sleeping elevation to about 500 metres per day, with extra acclimatization time. Individual needs vary. Fitness does not rule out altitude illness, and children can also be affected.

Discuss your proposed overnight sequence with a qualified clinician before booking. If symptoms develop, do not keep ascending to preserve the schedule; worsening symptoms require prompt medical assessment and may require descent. Oxygen at a hotel is not a substitute for suitable pacing or an evacuation plan. Ask who will arrange medical help, where the vehicle can turn back and which costs your insurance covers.

For older relatives, children or anyone who tires during repeated transfers, request fewer hotel changes and easy access from the vehicle to the room. Confirm stairs, lift availability, heating, bathroom layout and luggage assistance. A property described as comfortable may still have features that matter to your party. The useful answer is the room and access arrangement, not a star label alone.

Weather, meals and long driving days

Choose travel dates against the entire route. Clear weather in Chengdu does not describe a high pass farther west. Rain, landslides, construction and snow can affect different sections at the same time. A 25 September 2026 Nagqu weather warning included snow and ice on local G317 sections. That warning has a specific date and forecast period; it demonstrates why “autumn” should not be treated as a promise of ice-free roads.

Situation Arrange before departure Useful fallback
Road release or weather delay Who checks the next section and decides the day’s limit Earlier overnight stop or a shorter permitted route
Limited food choices on a transfer day Lunch stop, dietary details and suitable packed food Carry food you can eat without relying on a late arrival
Halal meals and prayer Specific restaurants or ingredients, private room space and planned stops Agreed food alternatives and a suitable clean, quiet space
Large luggage or child seats Vehicle layout with passengers, bags and required equipment included A larger confirmed vehicle or a reduced luggage load

For halal requirements, explain whether you need certified meat, separate preparation and utensils, or particular packaged-food alternatives. A vegetarian dish alone does not answer every dietary concern. Ask about each overnight town rather than relying on arrangements in Chengdu or Lhasa. Prayer stops should fit a safe stopping place and the real driving day; roadside shoulders and restricted sites are unsuitable substitutes.

Build toilet, meal, photo and checkpoint stops into the travel day. Ask for a realistic hotel-to-hotel schedule and a latest arrival decision, with the day’s optional stop clearly identified. Download essential addresses and keep the driver and receiving agency’s phone numbers accessible offline. Carry enough medication and necessary personal supplies for delays, within the rules that apply to those items.

How to compare a quotation and make the next decision

A useful quotation names the receiving operator, proposed vehicle, passenger and luggage capacity, guide language, overnight properties and daily sequence. It should separate included arrangements from attraction admissions, meals, driver expenses, document handling, additional hotel nights and changes caused by disruption. Ask how refunds or substitutions work if the approved route differs from your original request.

Our 12-day Sichuan–Tibet private itinerary is a related southern-route starting point and includes a Daocheng Yading extension. Its published pace is not a guarantee of suitability for your party or of access on your dates. Request a revised overnight and altitude plan if needed. G317 requires its own route proposal rather than a changed highway label on that itinerary.

Send Vero Trip your travel month, passport nationality, total available nights, main cultural or landscape interests, group ages, hotel preferences, dietary and prayer needs, and whether you want a driver or hope to drive yourself. If bringing your own vehicle, include its registration country and type. Use Plan My Trip to ask which corridor can support those requirements and what must be arranged before booking.

If your dates or access conditions cannot support either through route, compare a shorter region using the China road-trip route guide. Leaving out an extension can preserve the places and experiences that matter most without turning every day into a transfer.

If you prefer a rail arrival to the road corridors, compare the Chengdu–Lhasa train and Samye–Namtso planning guide. It explains station and document checks, overnight counting and a ground-stay outline with a flexible lake day.

After choosing the northern corridor, use the G317 Chengdu–Lhasa route planning guide for the named stages, hotel decisions and changed-road options. The stages are planning regions, not one-day driving promises.

Compare the holiday day, not only the highway photograph

Two proposals can have the same duration and still feel very different. One may allow time to understand a town before lunch, while the other spends that period reaching a viewpoint and then continues to a late hotel. Compare the whole daily rhythm of the northern and southern corridors. The question is which programme preserves your interests after road time, checking in, meals and rest have been included.

Social route comparisons often favour the southern road for scenery and the northern road for culture. They can be helpful starting questions, but they are not reliable operating instructions. Comments on one recent comparison disputed which road was smoother and less busy; the author later gave a different road recommendation. Ask for conditions on the dates and sections you will actually use, with the information’s source and update time.

Traveller preference Compare in the northern proposal Compare in the southern proposal
Architecture and living culture Time inside authorised sites and explanation Whether town visits survive the driving schedule
Landscape photography Safe, permitted stopping places and daylight How many viewpoints have real time beyond parking
Travelling with a parent Room access, continuous seat time and rest The same details; a famous road is no comfort guarantee
A limited holiday Which stages can realistically be omitted Whether the scenery you want requires an extension
Fewer hotel changes Opportunities for settled regional nights Opportunities for the same, with extra road distance shown

Test each proposal with the same difficult afternoon

Imagine departure is delayed and the first road section takes longer than planned. Ask both organisers which stop is removed, where lunch is taken and when the party reaches the hotel. A robust answer can be quite simple: keep the essential visit, shorten a secondary photo stop and agree the next change before continuing. An answer depending on perfect road conditions gives you less control over the experience.

Then imagine the opposite: clear weather and a place you would like to enjoy longer. Is there room to pause without losing the approved overnight or forcing a late drive? Scenic roads need some slack to be enjoyable. A route that only works when nobody wants to stop is a transport schedule with attractive names attached.

Separate preference from tolerance

You may prefer dramatic landscapes but dislike long uninterrupted vehicle sections. You may be interested in monasteries without wanting steep hill circuits or several dark interiors in succession. Explain both parts. Ask for shorter authorised walks, a proper meal and a warm rest space where available, and identify which activities are optional within the agreed programme.

Avoid choosing a corridor as an altitude shortcut. The relevant comparison is the sequence of sleeping elevations and ascent, together with your health and previous acclimatisation. An extra kilometre or a paved surface says little about that risk. A city hotel advertising oxygen also does not make a rapid ascent safe.

What to request side by side

Obtain the settlement for every night, expected drive windows, main visit time, approved foreign-visitor scope, room details, included admissions and the separate cost of any extension. Compare the total nights away from your starting city, not just nights on the highway. Arrival and departure connections may add days to one option.

If the northern and southern routes both seem too compressed, shorten the ambition. A more focused trip with a regional stay can give you a clearer experience than an extended loop selected to collect both road names. Agree any combination only after the full route, permissions and practical stages have been assessed; do not assume a connecting line on a map is an available tourist shortcut.
