Overnight plan: 2 nights in Pu’er, 4 nights in Jingmai Mountain, 1 night in Menghai, 2 nights in Jinghong. The final day is departure.

When to travel

November to April usually offers a drier travel window; spring can include seasonal tea activity. Summer is greener and wetter, with flexible walking plans.

How your private trip works

The day plan leaves room for meals, comfort stops and the pace of your party. Road times are planning estimates and may lengthen in rain or holiday traffic. Your final proposal confirms the meeting point, hotels, private vehicle, guiding language, included admissions and any booked workshops before payment. Domestic flights and trains are included only when itemised in that proposal. Travel insurance, personal purchases and meals not specified remain separate.

Tell us your dates, number of travellers, ages of children, walking preferences and preferred room arrangement. We can shorten walks and adjust departure times while keeping the overnight route practical. Hosted visits depend on the host’s availability; no shopping purchase is required.

Daily Itinerary

Lakeside greenery in Pu’er, Yunnan
Lakeside greenery in Pu’er, Yunnan

Meet your driver at Pu’er railway station or the airport and transfer to your hotel. Keep the first afternoon light: a short lakeside walk and a simple introduction to local rice noodles work well after a flight or train. Your guide discusses tea preferences and confirms the farm appointment for tomorrow. Late arrivals go straight to the hotel; no essential visit depends on arriving before lunch.

Overnight: Pu’er. Travel and walking: Local transfers, usually 30–60 minutes according to arrival point.

Coffee cherries on a shaded farm near Pu’er
Coffee cherries on a shaded farm near Pu’er

Spend the morning at a small coffee farm outside Simao, arranged with a host in advance. Walk a manageable section between shade trees, then compare a locally roasted cup with the raw agricultural product. Harvesting and processing are seasonal, so the visit centres on what is actually happening that week. Return after lunch, leaving the late afternoon free for a cafe or a rest before the mountain journey.

Overnight: Pu’er. Travel and walking: Allow 1–2 hours of road travel in total; easy farm walking.

Tiled village roofs among trees in Wengji

Leave Pu’er after breakfast and allow most of the morning and early afternoon for the road to Jingmai Mountain, with a lunch and comfort stop. Settle into a village guesthouse before exploring Wengji on foot. Notice how timber homes fit between mature trees and tea gardens. Keep the walk short on this transfer day, and ask before entering homes or photographing residents.

Overnight: Jingmai Mountain. Travel and walking: Pu’er to the mountain villages: roughly 4–5 hours including sensible stops.

Ancient tea trees beneath the forest canopy on Jingmai Mountain
Ancient tea trees beneath the forest canopy on Jingmai Mountain

Walk with a local guide along an established path through the old tea forest. The interest lies beneath the high canopy: scattered tea trees, leaf litter and the relationship between forest shade and cultivation. Plan about two hours with pauses, with a shorter option when paths are wet. After lunch, enjoy a hosted tea tasting; picking is added only during a suitable harvest period and with the grower’s agreement.

Overnight: Jingmai Mountain. Travel and walking: Short village drives; approximately 2–4 km of uneven forest walking, adjustable.

A quiet lane between timber homes in Nuogan
A quiet lane between timber homes in Nuogan

Take a relaxed morning in Nuogan, following lanes between timber houses rather than rushing from viewpoint to viewpoint. A guide can explain differences between nearby Dai and Blang communities without treating daily life as a performance. Spend the afternoon over tea with a willing host or read on the guesthouse veranda. Allow time for photographs in changing light, keeping cameras away from private interiors unless invited.

Overnight: Jingmai Mountain. Travel and walking: Short mountain-road transfers, generally under 1 hour each way.

A forest-edge path near Mangjing on Jingmai Mountain
A forest-edge path near Mangjing on Jingmai Mountain

Explore a village-edge route around Mangjing with a local guide, choosing the path according to the weather and residents’ advice. Look at the transition between homes, tea trees and taller woodland. Return for a leisurely lunch, then leave the afternoon open for another tasting or a missed viewpoint. Sacred areas and private plots stay outside the walk unless the community explicitly welcomes visitors.

Overnight: Jingmai Mountain. Travel and walking: Short drives between villages; around 1–2 hours of optional walking.

Tea-growing hills near Menghai in Xishuangbanna

After a last mountain breakfast, travel south towards Menghai. The day is primarily a change of base; allow a proper lunch break and avoid squeezing in a second long excursion. If arrival time permits, take a short roadside landscape stop at an accessible tea-growing area arranged by the guide. The lower, warmer surroundings make an interesting contrast with the canopy-grown tea you have just visited.

Overnight: Menghai. Travel and walking: Allow approximately 4–5 hours with stops; mountain sections can be slow.

The Lancang River beside Jinghong

Start with a prearranged tea tasting in Menghai, focusing on how storage and preparation change flavour. This is a tasting visit with no requirement to buy. Continue to Jinghong after lunch and check in before a gentle walk beside the Lancang River in the cooler late afternoon. Keep the evening flexible for Dai-influenced dishes, choosing spice levels and ingredients that suit your party.

Overnight: Jinghong. Travel and walking: Menghai to Jinghong: allow 1.5–2 hours plus city traffic.

Tropical leaves and shaded paths in Xishuangbanna
Tropical leaves and shaded paths in Xishuangbanna

Travel to Menglun for a day among tropical plants at the botanical garden. Use a selected garden circuit and any available official transport rather than trying to cover every zone. Pause for lunch and shade during the hottest hours, then return to Jinghong with time to rest. Carry water and rain protection; planted collections offer a rewarding visit without any promise of seeing wild animals.

Overnight: Jinghong. Travel and walking: Allow around 1.5–2 hours each way, plus a relaxed garden visit.

Enjoy breakfast and a final riverside coffee if your departure time allows. Your driver takes you to Xishuangbanna airport or the agreed Jinghong railway station with the check-in margin your carrier requires. The trip ends in Jinghong rather than doubling back to Pu’er. If you want to continue to Kunming by train, arrange the ticket and luggage allowance before finalising the tour.

Overnight: Departure. Travel and walking: Usually 30–60 minutes to the departure point, plus check-in time.

Frequently Asked Questions

The main spring harvest often falls between March and May, with exact dates varying by weather and grower. A tasting and forest walk can operate outside harvest time. We confirm whether picking or processing is possible for your dates rather than promising it throughout the year.

Expect uneven ground, roots and occasional steps. The usual forest outing can be kept to roughly 2–4 km with rests. Tell us about mobility needs before booking so we can select a shorter village-based alternative and a guesthouse with suitable access.

Village guesthouses are generally small and individually run. Room heating, air-conditioning, bathroom layout, stairs and vehicle access vary. We confirm the property and room type in your proposal; a scenic photograph does not describe a specific room.

Only when the residents agree. Your guide asks before arranging a home visit or photographing people. Ceremonies are community events, not scheduled performances, and private or sacred areas are respected.

The planned tastings explain tea growing and preparation. Buying tea is optional. Tell the guide if you prefer a tasting without shopping, and check your onward baggage allowance before purchasing large quantities.
