Plan a Dali, Tengchong and Nujiang road trip with 10 days, 9 nights, clear return roads, hotel choices, family pacing and shorter alternatives.

A Dali–Tengchong–Nujiang road trip works best when you decide what “Nujiang” means before booking: a short stay in Lushui, or a separate journey far up the gorge. For Dali, Baoshan, Tengchong, Lushui and Jianchuan, start with 10 days and 9 nights. Give yourself 12 days if you want more time in Dali and Lushui. Five driving days leave little room for hot springs, luggage changes, weather delays or a missed turn.

The example below returns from Lushui through the Baoshan–Dali expressway corridor, sleeps in Dali, then visits Jianchuan and Shaxi. Some roads are retraced. This makes the return leg explicit instead of assuming a short, continuous expressway across the mountains via Lanping. Travellers seeking a mountain-road circuit should agree the precise roads and overnight stops with their driver before committing to it.

Choose the trip by your priority, not the number of pins

Choose this combination for contrasting bases: Dali’s lakeside setting, a Baoshan stop, several nights in Tengchong, an introduction to the Nu River at Lushui, and a final village stay around Jianchuan. If your main interest is the long Nujiang gorge towards Fugong and Bingzhongluo, reduce the western stops and build a different itinerary.

Your priority Useful starting plan Main trade-off
Tengchong plus a short Nujiang introduction 10 days / 9 nights: the example below One Lushui night does not cover the upper gorge.
More time without adding destinations 12 days / 11 nights: add a Dali night at the start and a second Lushui night More flexible days; the same return corridor and village stop.
Only 7 days available Dali, Baoshan and Tengchong; arrange departure from Tengchong or allow for the return Leave Nujiang and Jianchuan for another trip.
Fugong, Bingzhongluo or remote valleys A dedicated Nujiang itinerary with its own access, roads and accommodation plan Do not add the upper gorge to the 10-day table as a day trip.

These are planning examples, not fixed departures or an all-inclusive package. The longer western Yunnan itinerary answers a different question: how to connect the southwest with Lijiang and Shangri-La over a much longer journey. This page focuses on returning to Dali.

What is the actual Lushui–Jianchuan return route?

For the example here, use Lushui → the Baoshan/Laoying junction area → Dali, then Dali → Jianchuan/Shaxi on the following day. Select the current permitted roads in navigation, check the day’s notices and allow a full transfer day back to Dali. You do not need to drive into central Baoshan simply because the expressway junction is in Baoshan’s administrative area.

Lushui is a county-level city in Nujiang Prefecture; Liuku is the urban name you will often see in hotel addresses and travel notes. Lanping belongs to the same prefecture, but that administrative relationship does not make it an easy riverside continuation from Liuku. Jianchuan belongs to Dali Prefecture, and Shaxi is a town within Jianchuan County. Choose the hotel by its exact address, not just the county label.

Connection How to plan it What not to assume
Tengchong → Lushui Use the expressway network towards Baoshan and the G5613 Baolu connection to Lushui, subject to current traffic directions. A straight line over the Gaoligong Mountains is not the road itinerary.
Lushui → Dali → Jianchuan/Shaxi Return through the established expressway corridor; the sample breaks this into two days with a Dali overnight. A map’s fastest arrival estimate is not time for sightseeing, meals and hotel access.
Lushui → Lanping → Jianchuan A separate mountain-road option. Request named via points, the day’s restrictions and an achievable overnight before choosing it. News about one opened section does not prove a complete direct expressway.
Jianchuan/Shaxi → Dali Use the appropriate local connection to the Dali–Lijiang corridor; keep the final Dali night before departure. A Shaxi hotel and a Jianchuan county-town hotel have the same pickup point.

The provincial transport authority describes G5613 linking the Baoshan side with Lushui. Its separate Yunlong–Lanping toll approval concerns that particular section. The 2026 Jianchuan government report also records the opening of the Shaxi branch. Read those as individual links, not a promise of a through Lushui–Jianchuan expressway.

A 10-day itinerary with 9 overnight stays

This example is for a car journey after vehicle, driver and hotel arrangements are settled. It deliberately gives Tengchong two full days and places an overnight between the Nujiang return and the Jianchuan visit. Start later, stop earlier or remove a visit if the day changes.

Day Route and overnight One realistic focus
1 Arrive in Dali. Sleep: Dali. Settle in, arrange the car handover and take a short local walk. No onward mountain drive after a late arrival.
2 Dali → Baoshan. Sleep: Baoshan. Transfer first. Add a city meal or an agreed coffee visit only if arrival leaves enough time.
3 Baoshan → Tengchong. Sleep: Tengchong/Heshun. Reach the hotel, leave the luggage and explore near the chosen base.
4 Tengchong. Same hotel. Choose a geothermal sightseeing outing or a separately booked bathing session; check what each ticket includes.
5 Tengchong. Same hotel. Choose one nature or cultural outing, with a shorter alternative for rain or tired travellers.
6 Tengchong → Lushui via the Baoshan expressway network. Sleep: Lushui/Liuku. Transfer, check in and enjoy an accessible urban riverside stop if conditions allow.
7 Lushui → Dali via the Baoshan/Laoying connection. Sleep: Dali. Protect the return drive. Keep dinner and the evening close to the hotel.
8 Dali → Jianchuan/Shaxi. Sleep: Shaxi or Jianchuan town. Choose the county-town streets or a Shaxi village stay; do not fill the transfer day with every nearby attraction.
9 Jianchuan/Shaxi → Dali. Sleep: Dali. A short morning visit, return journey and staffed vehicle handover if arranged for today.
10 Depart from Dali. No overnight included. Use the confirmed station or airport transfer, allowing time for any remaining rental-return steps.

Night count: Dali 3, Baoshan 1, Tengchong 3, Lushui 1 and Jianchuan/Shaxi 1: a total of 9 nights. Adding the suggested Dali and Lushui nights makes 12 days and 11 nights.

For the 12-day version, use the extra Dali day for a chosen lakeside area or rest. Use the extra Lushui day for an agreed local outing and a slower return to the same hotel. Neither extra night automatically includes a long journey to Bingzhongluo. Travellers with limited walking capacity may get more from two comfortable bases than from completing the whole circuit.

Choose hotels around the transfers

In Tengchong, staying three nights in one hotel avoids repeated packing. Heshun can suit travellers who want village evenings; a city base can suit travellers who prioritise direct vehicle access and simpler departures. Check the walking route from the drop-off to the room, steps, lift availability and luggage help. The Tengchong arrival and accommodation guide compares these choices.

For Lushui, choose the actual urban hotel and an agreed pickup point before travelling. A listing tagged “Nujiang” could be far up the valley. Give the property the guests’ passport nationalities and ask it to confirm the booking details and check-in procedure. A domestic traveller’s stay does not establish arrangements for your own party.

Traditional buildings along a street in Dali Old Town
A return night in Dali separates the Nujiang drive from the onward visit to Jianchuan and Shaxi.

On the return, a convenient Dali hotel can be more useful than a distant lake-view address. Ask about parking, breakfast timing and the next morning’s pickup. If the same property holds a bag while you travel, obtain its storage terms; keep passports, medicines and valuables with you. For the final village night, the Shaxi access guide helps you separate the main-road transfer from the last walk to the accommodation.

Under China’s Exit and Entry Administration Law, hotels register foreign guests; foreign visitors staying outside hotels generally need registration within 24 hours through the local public security authority. Have each person’s documents available. Confirm any destination-specific access requirements before adding border villages or remote valleys.

Self-drive, a car with driver, or a motorcycle?

A car with a properly arranged driver can remove the burden of finding the route, parking and rental return, but it still needs a clear daily scope. Confirm vehicle size with luggage, child-seat arrangements, working language, driver rest, hotel approach and what happens if a road is closed. An English-speaking guide and a driver are different services; request either explicitly.

If you plan to drive, arrange the required Chinese driving permission and a rental company willing to accept your documents before paying for the route. The national driving-licence regulations provide for temporary driving permission for overseas licence holders. Confirm the applicable process, vehicle category and validity with the issuing authority; an overseas licence or an international driving document alone is not a rental-handover plan. See the foreign-visitor rental guide for the questions to settle before collection, even if you intend to collect elsewhere.

Do not transfer a motorcycle route’s daily stages directly to a family car holiday. Riding qualifications, local restrictions, rental terms and support arrangements require separate checks. The table here assumes a car and does not promise a motorcycle rental, guide or support vehicle. Bringing a foreign-registered vehicle introduces additional vehicle-entry and route conditions beyond this domestic itinerary.

Meals, prayer, children and luggage

Put the main meal break in a town or an agreed stopping place before a long transfer. For Muslim travellers, confirm the kitchen’s ingredients, preparation practices and your required halal standard directly; a beef dish or vegetarian label alone does not answer those questions. Carry suitable backup food for days when the selected restaurant is closed or the drive changes.

Agree prayer breaks with the driver and request a clean private space at the hotel when needed. Do not assume a mosque, prayer room or suitable restaurant exists at every road stop. The Yunnan food, hotel and prayer guide gives a more detailed preparation checklist.

For children or older relatives, choose one main activity on a sightseeing day and preserve an easy return to the hotel. Ask for the actual walking surface, steps, toilets and resting places at the selected attraction. Keep a small daytime bag accessible in the vehicle. A full passenger count can leave insufficient space for large suitcases; send luggage quantities and approximate sizes when requesting a vehicle.

Rain, roadworks and changes to the plan

Check the forecast and local traffic notices before each long stage, then follow signs and directions on the road. A scenic mountain alternative should not become an improvised bypass around a closure. If the available route no longer fits the day, stay in the current base or an agreed intermediate town and revise the next hotel.

What changes? Practical response What to protect
The Lushui leg has an access or road problem Extend Tengchong or return towards Dali on a permitted route; remove the Nujiang stop if needed. Confirmed rooms and a workable vehicle plan.
The transfer runs late Drop the optional stop and reassess the overnight with the driver. Daylight driving and proper breaks.
Rain spoils a nature outing Choose a shorter local cultural visit or a hotel rest period, subject to opening conditions. The following day’s energy, rather than the full checklist.
A traveller wants the upper Nujiang gorge Redesign the trip with additional overnight stages and destination checks. A realistic return route; no last-minute dash to Bingzhongluo.

For geothermal visits, distinguish sightseeing around hot features from bathing in a managed facility. Do not build a bathing stop around an informal roadside pool. Check the operator’s admission, health restrictions and facilities for your party. The Tengchong hot-springs guide explains the choice.

What should the quote and booking confirmation contain?

Ask for the route with named overnight bases, vehicle and driver arrangements, hotel room types, local guiding, attraction admissions, fuel, tolls, parking, meals, and any rental deposit or one-way charge stated separately. Check cancellation and disruption terms before committing. Road distance alone cannot establish a trip price, and a planning diagram cannot establish that a particular service is available.

If coffee and a longer Tengchong stay matter more than the Nujiang branch, compare the existing Dali–Baoshan–Tengchong Coffee and Heritage Journey. Its route has a different focus; it does not automatically include Lushui or Jianchuan. The China self-drive collection provides broader choices for travellers considering driving themselves.

To discuss this route with VeroTrip, send your dates, arrival and departure cities, passport nationalities, party ages, mobility needs, luggage, meal and prayer requirements, and whether you want to drive or travel with a driver. Say whether Nujiang means a Lushui introduction or the upper gorge. That distinction determines the next useful step: comparing the feasible overnight plan and the services required for your dates.

Quick answers before you book

Can I do the whole route in five days?

Five days can describe a driving sequence, but it gives you very little time in each place. Use fewer bases for a short holiday. The 10-day example includes arrival, two full Tengchong days, a staged return and a final Dali overnight.

Does this loop go to Bingzhongluo?

No. It reaches Lushui/Liuku, at the southern end of the wider Nujiang journey. Fugong, Gongshan, Bingzhongluo and Dulongjiang need their own time and access planning.

Is Lanping a necessary stop?

No. The example returns via the Baoshan–Dali corridor. Choose a Lanping mountain-road alternative only after the precise route and overnight arrangements fit your dates, vehicle and comfort level.

Can I reverse the trip?

Yes, the planning sequence can be reversed if transport and accommodation work for your dates. Keep the same rest time and return buffer, and recheck each day’s routing. Reversing the arrows does not eliminate the long transfers.
