To rent a car in Kunming as a foreigner, first arrange a driving document valid in mainland China, then have the actual pickup branch accept your documents and payment method. A successful online reservation does not complete either step. If you are arriving without a Chinese driving licence or temporary driving permit, keep the first night in Kunming flexible and arrange transport to your hotel separately.
A rental car is most useful when your Yunnan trip includes rural stops, luggage-heavy changes of hotel or places that do not fit a convenient rail journey. For a short visit to central Kunming followed by Dali and Lijiang, trains and local transfers may save you the permit visit, parking and one-way rental arrangements. Make that decision before paying for a car.
This guide focuses on starting and finishing a rental in Kunming. For the wider rules, read our China car-rental guide for foreign visitors and temporary driving permit guide.
Separate your arrival, permit visit and car pickup
Kunming Changshui International Airport, Kunming Railway Station and Kunming South Railway Station are different arrival points. Copy the Chinese name from your ticket when discussing collection. “Kunming station pickup” is too vague, especially when a supplier uses a nearby office, a shuttle or a meeting point in a parking building.
| Your arrival point | What to establish before booking | A practical first-day choice |
|---|---|---|
| Kunming Changshui Airport / 昆明长水国际机场 (KMG) | Terminal meeting point, branch address, shuttle procedure and staff availability after your flight. | If you still need a permit, arrange the hotel transfer independently of the car. |
| Kunming Railway Station / 昆明站 | Station exit, exact handover address and whether collection includes a transfer. | Collect after your city stay if you will not need the car in central Kunming. |
| Kunming South / 昆明南站 | Use this full station name; do not select a branch by “Kunming” alone. | Compare the branch location with your hotel and onward route before committing. |
A rental office cannot issue a driving permit. An airport information desk is also not automatically the issuing counter. Put three separate pins in your plan: arrival, the traffic-police office handling your application, and the rental handover. Avoid a non-refundable out-of-town hotel on the assumption that all three will fit between your flight and dinner.

Prepare for the Kunming temporary driving permit visit
A foreign driving licence or an International Driving Permit by itself is not a substitute for the mainland Chinese driving document required for your rental. The national rules provide a temporary-permit route for eligible overseas licence holders, described in this official foreign-driver guidance. Match the permitted vehicle class and validity to the vehicle and your whole rental period; use Kunming’s local instructions for the application visit.
Older local police reporting describes an airport temporary-permit service. The 2021 airport-police notice also contains pandemic-era requirements. It should not be used as a current appointment or opening-hours guide. Do not assume that the international-arrivals hall has a counter that can issue your permit when you land.
For a city-office enquiry, use the full name 昆明市公安局车辆管理所. Its map listing gives 经开路12号 / 12 Jingkai Road and 0871-67267863. Ask which counter currently handles your temporary-permit application and obtain the correct entrance before travelling there. The map pin identifies the office; it does not establish an appointment, opening hours or acceptance of your application.
Ask specifically for 临时机动车驾驶许可, the temporary driving permit, rather than a permanent Chinese licence exchange. Those are different applications. Before leaving your hotel, establish the office entrance, whether an appointment is required, the accepted translation format, photograph requirements and the time to attend on your chosen date.
| Prepare | Check with the issuing office | Keep separate |
|---|---|---|
| Original passport and evidence of lawful entry or stay | Documents for your nationality and entry arrangement, including visa-free entry if applicable. | Admission to China does not itself grant permission to drive. |
| Original valid overseas driving licence | Licence category, expiry date and the Chinese translation it accepts. | A translation helps the application; it is not the issued permit. |
| Photographs and requested application details | Current photograph specification, copies, local contact details and any accommodation record requested. | A checklist for another Chinese city is not the Kunming counter’s instructions. |
| Rental dates and intended vehicle category | What the resulting permit authorises and how long it remains valid. | The rental branch must separately accept your documents and driver profile. |
Arrange translation before the appointment where possible, but first ask which format the office accepts. Keep your name and licence details consistent across the translation and rental account. Each intended driver needs appropriate permission and must also satisfy the rental agreement; the main renter’s documents do not cover another person taking the wheel.
If the permit visit cannot be completed before collection, contact the rental provider before the order’s change deadline. Move the pickup or use a different transport plan. Do not drive the car to the licensing office while waiting for permission to be issued.
Choose a staffed branch and get a usable answer
eHi and CAR Inc. publish foreign-customer document requirements, but your useful answer comes from the branch that will release the car. Tell it that you hold a foreign passport and specify whether you have a full Chinese licence or a temporary permit. Give your age, driving experience, vehicle category and dates. Ask whether the listed vehicle is supplied directly or by a partner, and who handles collection and problems.
eHi’s pickup guidance lists passport, Chinese driving documentation and credit-card requirements for foreign customers. A 2026 transport-authority guide to eHi’s foreign-traveller process also explains temporary permits and staffed pickup. These are useful starting points for discussing your booking; they do not constitute acceptance of a particular Kunming reservation.
For a first rental, prefer a staffed handover that can deal with your passport and permit. Ask how account registration, SMS codes and identity checks will work with your phone number. A convenient self-service collection option may require steps your documents cannot complete online. Resolve that before relying on an early-morning or late-night pickup.
Save the answer inside the booking channel where possible. Ask the branch to identify the vehicle class, permitted drivers, required originals, payment card, handover point and opening arrangements. If the answer is simply “foreigners can rent,” follow up with the exact permit type and card you plan to present.
Compare the full rental cost and the card hold
Compare quotations for the same dates, pickup and return branches, driver details and protection options. A low daily rate is not a complete trip price. A card pre-authorisation also uses your available credit even though it is different from a final charge.
| Item | Ask for this in the booking terms | Why it affects the choice |
|---|---|---|
| Rental and compulsory charges | Total for the whole period, service charges, mileage allowance and late-return calculation. | Compare the same package, not two headline day rates. |
| Deposit or pre-authorisation | Accepted card network, cardholder name, amount, available-credit requirement and release process. | Do not assume a domestic credit-score waiver works with your foreign account. |
| Protection and accident costs | Excess, exclusions, reporting steps, roadside assistance and extra authorised drivers. | “Full cover” is not an explanation of what you must pay after damage. |
| One-way or different-branch return | Acceptance at the named return branch and the complete additional charge. | Kunming–Dali or Kunming–Lijiang availability depends on the actual order. |
| Fuel, charging and later adjustments | Required return level, service fees, toll settlement and handling of later traffic notices. | A clean handover does not necessarily close every later transaction. |
Ask specifically about an overseas-issued card in the main renter’s name. A shop accepting mobile payment for the rental charge does not necessarily mean it accepts the same method for the security requirement. Keep enough credit available for the agreed hold and other travel costs.
If a booked car becomes unavailable, request the replacement category and total price before accepting it. Check luggage capacity, transmission, fuel type and protection again. A different model is not a useful substitute if your child seat or suitcases will not fit, or if it changes the trip to an unfamiliar charging routine.
Inspect the car before leaving the handover point
Walk around the car with the handover staff in adequate light. Photograph existing damage and have it entered on the condition record. Include wheels, windscreen, roof where visible, interior, fuel or battery level and the odometer. Keep the images together with the order and handover record; a video is helpful, but does not replace agreement about the condition.
Ask where the vehicle registration and required insurance information are kept, which documents must be carried, and how roadside assistance works. Do not accept “we can send a photo later” as an explanation without understanding what you need on the road. Ask staff to explain dashboard warning lights; if a safety-related warning remains unresolved, request a suitable replacement before setting off.
Try the controls while parked. Check the parking brake, lights, demisting, mirrors, navigation audio and phone charging. Fit and check any child seat before loading all the luggage. Choose a car that carries everyone and the bags comfortably without obstructing visibility.

For an electric car, ask staff to demonstrate starting a charging session and paying through the system you will use. Establish the required return charge and where you can charge before returning. Plan charging stops around your route and meals; another driver’s advertised or reported range does not predict your car’s range with your passengers, weather and roads.
Choose the part of Yunnan where a car earns its place
Collecting a car for the whole holiday can mean paying for several days when it sits outside a hotel. Start with the journeys that actually benefit from driving, then decide where collection and return belong.

| Your plan | When a rental makes sense | Alternative to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Central Kunming stay | You have several dispersed stops and have arranged convenient parking. | City transport and local transfers, with car collection later. |
| Stone Forest and a return to Kunming | The driver and car are ready and you want control over stops. | A day trip with a driver if permit arrangements outweigh the benefit of one driving day. |
| Kunming, Dali and Lijiang city stays | You want meaningful rural stops between hotels and have a workable parking plan. | Intercity trains plus transfers; compare the full rental and one-way costs. |
| A longer rural or mountain itinerary | You are comfortable with the roads and have checked vehicle, route and recovery conditions. | A private-driver itinerary when navigation or demanding driving would reduce the holiday. |
For Dali or Lijiang accommodation, ask the hotel for its actual vehicle-access and luggage-drop point. An old-town address does not guarantee you can drive to the door. Arrange assistance if a traveller cannot comfortably walk with bags. Check parking and overnight access before choosing a picturesque but inconvenient hotel.
Keep the first driving stage modest after a long journey. If heavy rain, road restrictions or an unfamiliar mountain section make the planned day unsuitable, change the sightseeing plan within the rental and road rules. Do not use a navigation shortcut as permission to enter a restricted road or take the car across a national border.

Make the return work with your departure
Confirm the return address, opening arrangements and inspection process before the final day. An airport branch may still involve a shuttle or a walk to the terminal. Allow for refuelling or charging, unloading, inspection and the transfer to your flight; do not treat the order’s return time as your airport check-in time.
Prefer a joint inspection while staff are present. Photograph the car, odometer and fuel or battery level again, and retain the final condition record. If you need an unattended return, obtain the agreed location, key procedure, liability handover point and evidence requirements in advance. A message saying “leave it in the car park” is incomplete.
Keep the booking contact reachable after departure. Save the final bill, hold-release information and the method for querying later tolls, traffic notices or damage claims. If a charge is disputed, request the itemised basis and compare it with the signed records through the provider’s official channel.
If renting does not fit, keep the holiday moving
If permit timing, payment or branch acceptance does not work, you can still visit Kunming and continue by rail or with a driver. Choose flexible first-night arrangements and keep the driver-free version of your first day ready. Travellers with children, older relatives or prayer and meal requirements should also allow a comfortable waiting place while one adult handles the paperwork.
For a concrete comparison, our 8-day relaxed Kunming, Dali and Lijiang private itinerary combines intercity rail with local private transfers and guiding. If you prefer to drive, browse the self-drive route collection and discuss vehicle arrangements separately for your dates.
Bring any essential food for the arrival period and identify suitable meal stops before a long drive. For halal meals, check the restaurant’s actual food preparation rather than assuming a dish is suitable because it contains no pork. Discuss prayer stops, toilets, walking distance and luggage together when choosing rest breaks.
Send VeroTrip your proposed Yunnan journey with arrival and departure details, intended stops, driver-document type, passenger ages, suitcase count and meal or prayer needs. Say whether you are comparing self-drive with a private-driver trip. This gives us the information needed to discuss a workable itinerary; rental acceptance and any included services must be set out in the specific arrangement before booking.
Quick answers before you book
Can I collect immediately after an international flight?
Only plan around immediate collection when you already have the required driving permission and the branch has accepted your documents, payment and arrival arrangements. If you still need a permit, leave time for a separate office visit and keep hotel transport available.
Does another traveller’s successful Kunming rental prove I can rent?
No. Their licence, passport, payment card, account and vehicle may differ. Use their experience to identify questions about the handover, then get an answer for your own booking.
Can I return a Kunming car in Dali or Lijiang?
Ask for that exact one-way arrangement before booking. The destination branch, dates, vehicle and additional charge need to appear in your order. If they do not work, compare a return to Kunming or a rail-based route.
