Agree the freight service, customs handover and road-use arrangements before shipping a motorcycle to China. Keep a record of the bike’s condition, allow time between cargo arrival and riding, and settle the exit plan before the journey begins.

Shipping the motorcycle does not authorise the ride
Cargo arrival, customs release and lawful road use are separate steps. A motorcycle can have reached a Chinese port without being ready to collect and ride. Before booking freight, agree who acts as consignee or receiving agent, who handles customs, where inspection and document processing take place, and how the motorcycle reaches the handover point.
Start with the bringing your own motorcycle into China guide and the motorcycle licences, guides and permits guide. This article focuses on logistics and responsibilities, rather than repeating the document checklist.

Get a complete freight quotation
Ask which legs the quotation includes: collection, crating, export handling, main freight, destination handling, customs brokerage, storage and local transport. Confirm which charges are estimates and who pays if a sailing, flight or clearance is delayed. A low freight figure can exclude much of the work needed to reach the motorcycle handover.
Request the carrier’s current packing and dangerous-goods instructions for the actual shipment. Fuel, batteries, aerosols and loose equipment require carrier-specific decisions. Do not use a travel blog’s packing rule as clearance to ship.
Create a handover record before packing
Photograph the motorcycle and record its identifying details, visible condition, keys and accessories. Keep an inventory of items packed with it and confirm whether the carrier accepts those items. Separate original documents needed during travel from material that might be inaccessible inside a crate.
Agree who checks the motorcycle on arrival and how missing items or damage are recorded. If a battery or component has been disconnected for shipment, identify who restores the bike to a ride-ready condition and checks it before handover.
Leave space between collection and the first long stage
Customs and warehouse hours, appointments, transport and mechanical preparation can each affect collection. Avoid booking the first remote riding stage immediately after a predicted cargo arrival. A few local preparation nights may be more useful than a tightly booked chain of hotels that assumes everything happens on one day.
A receiving team should explain where the motorcycle waits if collection is delayed and who is responsible for storage charges. The rider’s arrival date, vehicle release date and lawful road-use start date do not have to be identical.
Define recovery before reaching a remote road
Ask what happens after a puncture, minor mechanical fault, unrideable motorcycle or rider withdrawal. Basic roadside help, transport to a workshop, long-distance recovery and international re-export are different services. A vehicle accompanying the group may not have space or equipment to carry your motorcycle.
For remote Tibet or a long crossing, confirm the communication procedure, the authorised repair decision-maker and the cost approval process. Read daily support and equipment planning alongside the border corridor guide.

A broken motorcycle still needs an exit plan
Do not assume a mechanical failure cancels customs obligations or vehicle-document deadlines. Contact the receiving team and relevant authorities promptly if the original exit is no longer possible. Agree lawful storage and the required transport or re-export process instead of abandoning the vehicle or improvising a sale.
Before departure, ask which documents close the temporary-import file, who obtains proof of exit and how any guarantee is released. The exact procedure belongs to the receiving customs arrangement, so get it in writing for your motorcycle.
Confirm these responsibilities before paying
- Named contacts for freight, customs, local transport and motorcycle handover.
- The complete cost scope, including storage and delays.
- Carrier-approved packing and an inventory with condition photographs.
- The road-use and reception arrangement after collection.
- The recovery scope and authority to approve repair costs.
- The exit, re-export and customs-file closure process.
Confirm your travel plan and freight arrangements together. Ask for the named providers, handover point, costs and responsibilities in one written proposal.
Frequently asked questions
Can I collect my motorcycle and ride straight from the cargo terminal?
Only after the required customs, rider, vehicle and reception arrangements are complete. Release from a warehouse alone is not proof that road use is lawful.
Is air freight always better than sea freight?
The right choice depends on the available service, cost, handling requirements and timing. Compare complete quotations and realistic collection dates rather than the main transport leg alone.
May I leave luggage in the motorcycle crate?
Ask the carrier and customs agent what they accept and how it must be declared. Do not assume personal equipment can travel inside a vehicle shipment without restrictions.
Does a guided tour include international recovery?
Not automatically. Ask exactly how an unrideable motorcycle is moved, stored, repaired or re-exported and who pays each cost.
Can I leave the motorcycle in China after a breakdown?
Do not assume this is permitted. Notify the receiving team and authorities, then arrange an authorised solution within the applicable document and customs framework.
