A foreign licence or an International Driving Permit on its own does not authorise driving in mainland China. The road is mountainous, yet the itinerary includes non-driving days and a support option for less confident drivers. The itinerary is not sold as a confirmed flower, snow-peak or sunrise tour. Deqin and Baoshan access depend on weather and road notices, and an alternative overnight is built into the operating plan.
Choose between supported self-drive and a private professional-driver version. The final proposal names the vehicle class, number of seats after luggage, insurance scope, deposit, mileage policy, tolls, fuel, one-way fee, roadside support and the person responsible for each remote sector. We do not hide those decisions behind “vehicle included”.
Best time, pace and road conditions
March to May and September to November usually balance visibility and temperature. Summer is lush but landslide delays are possible; winter needs ice checks around Deqin and high passes. Daily distances are planning estimates, not promises of arrival time. Road works, weather, queues, park reservations and hotel access can change the operating route.
Who should choose self-drive—and who should not
Self-drive works best for guests who are comfortable reading traffic situations through a bilingual navigation setup, sharing driving and accepting local parking and toll routines. Choose the professional-driver version if you want every traveller to enjoy the scenery, if only one person is confident behind the wheel, or if the itinerary includes a particularly demanding remote sector. A mixed solution is also possible.

Daily Itinerary
Private airport or station transfer, hotel check-in and a short route briefing. The team reviews the altitude profile, luggage, medication storage and who intends to drive. Driving decision: Do not schedule permit work immediately after a delayed international arrival.
After permit and vehicle handover, drive roughly 180 km to Dongchuan. Reach selected viewpoints in late afternoon, when the patchwork fields are often more dimensional than at midday. Driving decision: Colours depend on crops, soil and weather; no edited “red carpet” is promised.
Travel north through a quieter transition zone toward Puge. This is a route-building day with village landscapes and local meals rather than a list of famous ticketed sights. Driving decision: The overnight stop is chosen to keep the following Lugu Lake arrival realistic.
Drive about 300 km through mountain country to Lugu Lake, taking scheduled breaks before the final winding section. Arrive with enough light for a calm lakeside orientation instead of racing around the shore. Driving decision: Motion-sickness planning and child-seat checks are handled before departure.
Follow the best open scenic road toward Baoshan Stone Village. A local transfer may replace the rental vehicle on the narrowest approach if that is safer or required. Driving decision: Overnight luggage can be reduced to a small bag for easier village access.
Enjoy a slow village morning, then drive to Lijiang. The vehicle is parked outside the most congested pedestrian lanes and the hotel is selected for sensible luggage access. Driving decision: Old-town charm is not allowed to override practical check-in.
Leave the car parked for Baisha, Shuhe, a market or a Naxi cultural visit. The programme is deliberately lighter after mountain roads and can be adjusted for families or photographers. Driving decision: Jade Dragon Snow Mountain can be substituted with advance ticket planning.
Drive to the upper gorge, walk the safe open section and continue toward Shangri-La. Baishuitai is used only when the additional road time and conditions suit the group. Driving decision: Hiking closures and heavy rain trigger a direct-road alternative.
Explore Songzanlin, Dukezong and a suitable nature site without driving a long sector. This day helps travellers adapt before Deqin and protects the itinerary from earlier delays. Driving decision: Walking is paced for altitude, not step counts.
Drive north along the upper Yangtze and into the Mekong watershed toward Deqin and Feilai Temple. Viewpoints are chosen for legal parking and clear access, not unsafe roadside stops. Driving decision: Mountain visibility is weather-dependent.
Descend beside the Lancang/Mekong corridor, with a Cizhong visit when locally open and appropriate. The lower altitude and changing vegetation make this more than a transfer day. Driving decision: The final road is selected after checking construction and rain damage.
Continue to Shaxi for a Tea Horse Road town visit, then follow the confirmed overnight plan. If a single-day return to Kunming would create an excessive drive, add Dali or use the train-supported vehicle return option agreed before booking. Driving decision: GoChinaHoliday will not hide a 475 km mountain day behind an optimistic estimate.
Complete the return using the agreed road-and-rail combination or a final driving sector, return the car and connect to the airport only with a safe buffer. Travellers may extend in Dali or Kunming. Driving decision: The exact Day 12/13 split is fixed after flight times are known.
