Luoyang
Luoyang rewards travelers who combine monumental Buddhist art at Longmen Grottoes with living temple traditions, old-city streets and distinctive local food. Two days is a practical minimum; spring is especially popular when peonies bloom.
What to See
Longmen Grottoes is the essential visit and deserves an unhurried half day. White Horse Temple, Guanlin and the old city add religious, historical and neighborhood perspectives. A Tang Sancai workshop can make the city’s ceramic heritage more tangible.
Food and Timing
Try a carefully selected version of Luoyang’s water banquet, soup dishes and local noodles rather than rushing through a fixed tourist menu. April to May and September to October are comfortable; summer is hot and winter can be cold. Longmen includes considerable walking and exposed sections.
