Is this trip right for you?

Travellers who want a slower northern Yunnan journey and prefer flexible, moderate sightseeing to demanding trekking.

Route: Lijiang → Baisha and Yuhu → Tiger Leaping Gorge → Shangri-La

Overnight plan: 5 nights in Lijiang, 4 nights in Shangri-La. The final day is departure.

When to travel

Spring and autumn often suit village and plateau outings. Summer brings rain and green scenery; winter requires warm layers and a flexible mountain plan.

How your private trip works

The day plan leaves room for meals, comfort stops and the pace of your party. Road times are planning estimates and may lengthen in rain or holiday traffic. Your final proposal confirms the meeting point, hotels, private vehicle, guiding language, included admissions and any booked workshops before payment. Domestic flights and trains are included only when itemised in that proposal. Travel insurance, personal purchases and meals not specified remain separate.

Tell us your dates, number of travellers, ages of children, walking preferences and preferred room arrangement. We can shorten walks and adjust departure times while keeping the overnight route practical. Hosted visits depend on the host’s availability; no shopping purchase is required.

Daily Itinerary

Stone lanes and timber houses in Lijiang
Stone lanes and timber houses in Lijiang

Meet at Lijiang airport or railway station and settle into your hotel. If you feel comfortable after the journey, take a short orientation walk near the old town, with time for tea and an early dinner. The first day avoids a high mountain ascent. Your guide confirms the next day’s pacing and any dietary or walking needs before you turn in.

Overnight: Lijiang. Travel and walking: Local transfer usually 30–60 minutes, depending on the hotel.

A quiet lane in Baisha near Lijiang
A quiet lane in Baisha near Lijiang

Visit Baisha at an unhurried pace, walking selected lanes and entering a heritage site only when open. A guide helps connect the architecture and local history with the everyday village around it. Pause for lunch and a seated tea stop, then return to Lijiang with free time. Keep any craft encounter prearranged rather than relying on a workshop being available by chance.

Overnight: Lijiang. Travel and walking: Local drives around 1–1.5 hours in total; short village walks.

Stone houses in Yuhu village below Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

Head to Yuhu for a gentle walk among the village’s distinctive stone houses. Choose a short established path near the fields for mountain views when visibility allows, with no promise that the peaks will be clear. Return after lunch and keep the afternoon relaxed. Horse riding is not assumed or required; walking gives time to notice the materials, gardens and village setting.

Overnight: Lijiang. Travel and walking: Allow around 1.5–2 hours of driving in total; roughly 2–3 km of optional walking.

Blue-green water in Blue Moon Valley near Lijiang

Visit the Jade Dragon scenic area using one confirmed cable-car option, normally the lower Spruce Meadow route when it suits your party and is operating. Combine it with a measured Blue Moon Valley visit, allowing time for shuttles, queues, lunch and rest. Do not try to add a second cable car. Wind, weather, tickets and how you feel determine the day; a village-based alternative is available.

Overnight: Lijiang. Travel and walking: Allow most of the day, including roughly 1.5–2 hours of road travel and scenic-area transport.

Meet a willing local craft host for a prearranged conversation or simple activity, then enjoy lunch without rushing. The afternoon follows a quieter old-town route, with time for a cafe and independent browsing. If the host is unavailable, substitute a suitable heritage visit agreed with you. Buying craft is optional, and no ceremonial performance is presented as something residents must provide.

Overnight: Lijiang. Travel and walking: Local transfers and short walks with seated breaks.

The Jinsha River in Tiger Leaping Gorge
The Jinsha River in Tiger Leaping Gorge

Leave Lijiang after breakfast and visit an open established viewing area at Tiger Leaping Gorge. Choose the stair or access option that suits your group and pause for lunch before continuing to Shangri-La. This is a scenic visit, not the multi-day high trail or a river-edge scramble. On arrival, keep the evening quiet and avoid strenuous activity in the higher setting.

Overnight: Shangri-La. Travel and walking: Allow around 4–5 hours of total road travel plus a 1–1.5 hour gorge stop.

Take the morning slowly with a short walk around Dukezong and a seated tea or cafe break. Your guide adapts the length to how you feel at the higher elevation. After lunch, keep time free at the hotel or for a modest local outing. A relaxed first full day is more useful than forcing several high-altitude sights into the schedule.

Overnight: Shangri-La. Travel and walking: Local transfers and short walks with frequent rests.

Seasonal wetland and grassland at Napa Lake

Take a gentle outing around accessible parts of the Napa area, choosing stops according to current water levels and road access. The landscape changes through the year, so expect seasonal grassland and wetland rather than a permanently full lake. Return for lunch and rest, with no long trek or guaranteed wildlife sighting. Keep the afternoon flexible for your group’s energy and the weather.

Overnight: Shangri-La. Travel and walking: Local drives roughly 1.5–2 hours in total; short level walks where accessible.

Songzanlin Monastery above Shangri-La
Songzanlin Monastery above Shangri-La

Visit Songzanlin with a guide who can explain the monastery’s setting and appropriate visitor behaviour. Follow current access and photography rules, dress respectfully and take steps slowly. Return to town for lunch and a free afternoon. If you prefer to avoid the climb or are not feeling comfortable at altitude, choose a lower-effort local alternative rather than treating the visit as compulsory.

Overnight: Shangri-La. Travel and walking: Local transfers; steps at the monastery, with rests and an alternative option.

Leave for Shangri-La airport or railway station at the agreed time, with the carrier’s check-in margin. Keep the morning simple and let the driver confirm the exact departure point. The journey ends in Shangri-La, avoiding a long return drive to Lijiang. If your wider route requires a rail connection, reserve it before finalising the hotels.

Overnight: Departure. Travel and walking: Local departure transfer, normally 20–45 minutes plus check-in time.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. A lower scenic-area option or a village-based day can be planned. The route does not require the Glacier Park ascent. Tell us about your preferences and any concerns before booking; how you feel and current conditions take priority.

No service is guaranteed before confirmation. Tickets, operating hours and weather restrictions are checked for your date. We reserve the selected option when possible and explain the alternative if it is unavailable.

The road from Lijiang can take roughly 4.5–6 hours each way with breaks. We recommend an overnight stay, and this longer route uses several nights so the drive does not dominate the experience.

Only with a willing host and an agreed appointment. Such visits focus on conversation and ordinary hospitality, not staged ceremonies. Your guide asks about photographs and respects private spaces.

Yes. Tell us dietary needs, ages and walking preferences before booking. We plan shorter village routes, proper lunch breaks and suitable hotel access rather than assuming everyone wants the same pace.
