Choose the right Chengdu airport transfer, terminal approach and hotel night, with realistic luggage, late-arrival and onward Sichuan travel decisions.

Check the airport code before arranging any Chengdu transfer: TFU is Chengdu Tianfu International Airport; CTU is Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport. They are separate airports, with different terminal approaches and ground connections. Match the code, terminal and flight date on each booking before choosing a hotel, driver meeting point or onward train.

For a city break, compare the complete journey from the arrival hall to your hotel. For a connection between airports, include baggage collection, any arrival formalities, ground travel and the next airline’s check-in requirements. A metro journey time cannot stand for that complete connection.

TFU or CTU: start with your actual flight

If two flights otherwise suit your dates, compare the fare, usable arrival time, baggage allowance and complete hotel transfer. A cheaper ticket may lose its advantage if it adds a difficult late arrival or another airport change. An early flight can also require a different final night from a comfortable afternoon departure.

Do not assign an airport from a general rule about international or domestic flights. Cathay’s relocation notice, for example, moved its Chengdu operations from Tianfu to Shuangliu from 31 July 2026. That is a dated airline-specific example, not a rule for every carrier. Recheck your own operating airline and current ticket after a schedule change.

Ticket or destination Name to recognise What to arrange
TFU Chengdu Tianfu International Airport / 成都天府国际机场 A Tianfu pickup or terminal approach; do not send only “Chengdu airport”
CTU Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport / 成都双流国际机场 A Shuangliu pickup and the correct terminal
TFU arrival, CTU departure, or the reverse An airport-to-airport ground transfer Both airport codes, both terminals, luggage handling and the next flight process
Chengdu East, South or an airport railway station A separate rail journey with its own named station The actual station on the issued rail ticket, plus the journey from the airport

Tianfu arrival: follow the ground-transport signs, then choose the line

After completing the applicable arrival process and collecting your bags, follow signs for ground transportation and your selected mode. The airport’s published ground-transport explanation describes the Ground Transportation Centre, or GTC, and distinguishes taxis, booked cars, airport buses and rail connections.

Metro Lines 18 and 19 serve the Tianfu airport terminal station. Line 18 provides the Chengdu South Railway Station approach; Line 19 is useful for the Shuangliu airport connection. Check the line number, destination and stopping pattern on the platform display. Services share part of the route, so the next train is not automatically the right one.

The metro operator’s two-airport guide distinguishes express and ordinary trains. Use current station information or the Chengdu Metro app to choose the service. A train that skips stops can be useful for an airport connection but unsuitable for the intermediate stop you need.

For a hotel around Tianfu Square or Chunxi Road, plan the onward city connection and the final walk as well as the airport line. Chengdu South is a transport stage, not a promise that you have reached your hotel. With several large cases, a late arrival or tired children, compare a road transfer against the whole rail journey rather than just its ticket cost.

Shuangliu arrival: distinguish the terminal stations

The airport’s current metro page lists Line 10 at the Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 stations, and Line 19 at Shuangliu Airport Terminal 2 East. The Terminal 2 Line 10 station and Terminal 2 East are different station names. Follow the line-specific signs instead of heading for the first sign containing “Terminal 2.”

Its access instructions put the Terminal 1 Line 10 approach outside arrival-level Exit 4, and the Terminal 2 approach through the B2 passages L2–L4. For Line 19, the page identifies the B2 L3 passage and parking-area C/D entrances. Use current signs and staff directions if layouts or access arrangements change.

Line 10’s published station list includes Taipingyuan and Wuhou Shrine. Choose the onward connection for the actual hotel address; the nearest useful station for one Chengdu neighbourhood may be a poor choice for another. The airport also lists Line 30 at Terminal 2 East, so a familiar station name alone is insufficient: confirm the line and destination before boarding.

Taxi, booked car or airport bus?

A taxi can simplify the final approach to a hotel that is awkward with luggage. Use the signed taxi queue. Shuangliu’s taxi information identifies terminal-specific ranks. A car ordered through an app may use a different pickup zone; follow the confirmed order and current airport directions rather than waiting at a taxi rank for it.

Save the hotel’s full Chinese name, address and telephone number before travelling. Keep a screenshot available offline. At a pedestrian street or lane-side property, agree the nearest legal stopping point and the walk to reception. “Near Chunxi Road” does not tell a driver which entrance accepts luggage.

An airport bus is most useful when its actual stop fits your hotel. Check the service for your arrival time, luggage arrangements and the last part of the journey. A bus to a central stop still leaves a walk or another ride. Compare that remaining stage when it is raining or after the final metro connection has finished.

For a booked transfer, settle the meeting location, driver contact method, vehicle luggage capacity and response to a delayed flight. Ask when waiting time starts and what happens if the phone connection fails. Airport assistance, an English-speaking escort and a vehicle transfer are separate services; none is implied by a general transport request.

Changing between Tianfu and Shuangliu

Line 19 links the airport areas. Look for Tianfu Airport Terminal 1 & 2 and Shuangliu Airport Terminal 2 East, then allow the appropriate walk to the required flight terminal. Use the actual train pattern and waiting time for your date. A quoted express running time does not include getting through arrivals or reaching the next check-in counter.

Before buying a cross-airport connection, ask the airline or ticket issuer how baggage is handled, whether you must collect and recheck it, and what protection applies if the first flight is delayed. Keep the answer attached to the booking. Separate tickets and a through booking can carry different conditions; this guide cannot establish a protected connection for your flights.

A ground transfer also requires the right permission to enter the mainland arrival area. Check your own entry or transit eligibility with official channels and the airline before relying on a change of airports. Do not assume an airside transit arrangement allows you to leave one airport and travel to the other.

If the available connection depends on everything happening immediately, compare another flight or an overnight. A car removes some station changes, but road traffic and the next airline’s deadlines remain. Keep sightseeing out of a tight airport-change plan.

Choose the first and last nights around the journey

Situation Base to consider Practical consequence
Several Chengdu sightseeing days One city hotel near the places you will use Make the airport transfer once, then keep the larger bags at that base
Very late arrival before a flexible next day A hotel whose reception and arrival route are confirmed Tell the property about arrival after midnight and book the correct night
Early flight after a Sichuan excursion A final Chengdu night or the correct airport-area hotel Complete the excursion return separately and confirm the morning terminal transfer
Airport change with a planned overnight A property chosen for the onward airport and timing Check actual shuttle hours, booking terms and passport reception; “airport hotel” is insufficient

For a central stay, the Chengdu trip-planning guide compares city areas and sightseeing choices. A city base makes sense when the holiday is about pandas, museums and neighbourhood time. An airport-area room is a timing solution for a particular flight, rather than a default sightseeing base.

Confirm whether an early-morning arrival needs the room booked from the previous night. Ask the actual property about foreign-passport registration, late reception, lifts and the final approach with bags. Do not interpret an advertised shuttle as a confirmed seat for your flight time.

Three arrival-day rhythms

Suggested sequence Arrival day Next step
Daytime arrival for a city break Complete arrivals, transfer, check in and take a short local meal or walk if comfortable Keep the important museum or panda session for a later confirmed day
Late arrival Reach the agreed hotel, retain the overnight contact and rest Begin sightseeing after a realistic start the next morning
Arrival before a wider Sichuan journey Use a Chengdu night when the onward connection needs resilience Travel to the next base on a separate day, with the rail station or road pickup already settled

These are planning examples, not airport minimum-connection rules. A landing time is not the moment you reach the street, and an early hotel drop does not guarantee immediate room access. Keep prepaid timed sightseeing away from an uncertain arrival.

Continuing to Leshan, Emei or Jiuzhaigou

Shuangliu’s railway guide identifies the airport railway station and the Chengdu–Leshan–Emeishan corridor. Consult the dated railway search for a service that actually stops at your required stations. A corridor list does not mean every train stops at the airport, or that a seat is available after your flight.

Chengdu East and Chengdu South are different stations. Match the exact departure station on the issued ticket, then include the airport-to-station journey, security and boarding. Avoid buying a fixed onward train from a landing-time calculation alone.

For Leshan and Mount Emei, separate the Buddha visit, mountain programme and return connection. For Jiuzhaigou by train, the destination-station road transfer and park-base hotel also belong in the journey. An airport arrival should not be counted as a complete park day.

Luggage, wet weather and the return flight

Choose transport for the bags you actually have. Count large cases, folding mobility equipment and children as well as passengers when requesting a vehicle. For metro travel, consider station walking, lifts, crowds and the final hotel approach. Ask for specific accessibility assistance if it is essential; a rail connection alone does not establish a step-free journey throughout.

Keep passports, flight details, hotel address and essential personal items in the small bag. If leaving larger cases at a Chengdu hotel during an excursion, obtain its agreement and collection arrangements. An airport departure from a different base may make returning for stored bags impractical.

Rain can make an exposed hotel approach less pleasant, while flight or road disruption can consume the margin for onward travel. Replace an optional arrival walk with rest rather than adding a distant indoor attraction. On departure day, work backwards from your airline’s required airport arrival time and allow the complete hotel checkout, pickup and terminal approach.

Costs and a written transport request

Compare the total metro or bus journey with any final taxi, then compare that with the quoted vehicle service. For a private transfer, clarify tolls, parking, waiting, extra stops, late changes and luggage capacity. This guide gives no fixed fare or promise of available vehicles.

The existing five-day Chengdu, Qingcheng and Leshan itinerary is one sightseeing outline with arrival and departure stages to discuss. It is not an airport-transfer tariff, and its sequence should be adjusted to the actual flights and preferred pace. Price on request; the written proposal determines confirmed transport, guiding, admissions and other services.

Frequently asked questions

Are TFU and CTU two terminals of one airport?

No. They identify Tianfu and Shuangliu, two separate airports. A terminal number needs the airport code alongside it.

Can I use Line 19 for an airport change?

It connects the airport areas. Confirm the correct service, terminal-station names, operating time and onward flight requirements. Include the walks and formalities around the train ride.

Should I book a car for a late arrival?

Compare the operating public transport with your hotel’s final approach and luggage. If requesting a car, confirm the meeting point, delay arrangements and full scope before relying on it.

Can I go straight from my flight to a Sichuan excursion?

Develop the complete onward journey first. An overnight in Chengdu is useful when delays would otherwise jeopardise a train, reserved visit or long road transfer.

Send Vero Trip your flight dates and numbers, TFU or CTU, terminals, hotel address, passenger and luggage counts, onward plans and mobility needs through Plan My Trip. We can then discuss an arrival sequence that fits the holiday, with any requested services confirmed separately in writing.
