Choose a 5-day Sanya–Lingshui drive or 7-day Hainan east-coast itinerary, with hotel nights, foreign-driver documents, rental checks and weather alternatives.

A good Hainan self drive itinerary uses five days for Sanya and nearby Lingshui, or seven days for a one-way journey from Haikou through Wenchang and Wanning to Sanya. Choose the shorter trip for fewer hotel changes and time by the sea. Choose the longer trip for old streets, coconut landscapes and several coastal regions. Neither requires you to complete the island circuit.

These examples assume arrival on Day 1 and departure on the final day: five days means four hotel nights; seven days means six. They use a locally rented car, subject to the driver’s documents and the rental branch accepting the booking. Flight times, licence collection and weather may require an extra night.

Choose your route before booking the car

Start with your arrival airport, departure airport and preferred number of hotel changes. A cheap return flight can become an awkward road itinerary if you finish at the other end of the island.

Choose this plan Route and hotel nights Main condition
Five days: southern coast Sanya 2 nights → Lingshui 2 nights → depart Sanya Best when your flights use Sanya and you prefer two bases. Move the last night back to Sanya for an early departure.
Seven days: east coast Haikou 1 night → Wenchang 1 → Wanning 2 → Sanya 2 Book Haikou pickup and Sanya return together. Check the actual branch, fee and permitted driver documents before paying.
Seven days with return flights to Haikou Keep a northern/eastern route, or add time for a return journey Do not add a Sanya-to-Haikou drive immediately before an important flight simply to retain every stop.

Illustrative planning map. Five days uses Sanya and Lingshui for four nights; seven days runs from Haikou to Sanya with six nights at four bases. Hollow dots are optional stops with no overnight. Select the map to enlarge.

The official Hainan Coastal Scenic Highway guide describes a 988-kilometre main route around the island. That is a road’s length, not the distance of either holiday below. Hotel access, viewpoints and town visits add their own journeys. A full circuit also brings western Hainan into the plan; save Changjiang and Danzhou for a longer trip or a separate western route.

Foreign drivers: complete these steps before pickup

Hainan’s official car-rental guidance requires a passport and a Chinese driving licence for foreign renters and says an international driving permit is not accepted in its place. If you do not hold a suitable Chinese licence, arrange the appropriate temporary driving permit before driving.

  1. Choose the office and document route. The provincial temporary-permit instructions list a passport or valid entry/exit document, a foreign driving licence with certified Chinese translation, and two recent one-inch photographs with a white background. They identify an online system, port traffic-management stations and local vehicle-management offices. Ask the intended office about your licence category, translation, originals and collection arrangements.
  2. Check the rental branch separately. Send the branch your passport nationality, intended permit type, driver age, pickup time and return location. Ask which payment card and deposit method it accepts. An app reservation does not establish that your documents will be accepted at the counter.
  3. Match every driver and the vehicle. Check the permit’s vehicle category, dates and any conditions. Add a second driver to the rental agreement if they will drive. Tell the supplier how many adults, children, suitcases and mobility aids must fit with every passenger seated.
  4. Keep a workable arrival day. Do not promise yourself a coastal drive straight after an international flight. If permit collection or the rental handover cannot be completed, use a prearranged transfer or a licensed taxi to your hotel and start later.

Before accepting the keys, photograph the car’s existing damage and fuel or battery level with the handover record. Ask for the accident and breakdown procedure, excess, exclusions, return condition and late-return charges. For an electric car, have the branch demonstrate the charging and payment process you will actually use; a charger shown on a map is not a reservation or proof that your payment method works.

Five-day itinerary: Sanya and Lingshui at a slower pace

This plan gives both bases a full day without moving luggage. Choose one Sanya coastal area for the first two nights and one Lingshui area for the next two. Yalong Bay and Lingshui’s Clearwater Bay (Qingshuiwan) are different places: check the hotel’s Chinese address and parking entrance, not just the word “bay”.

Day and overnight Suggested plan Keep the day manageable
Day 1 — Sanya Arrive, complete the agreed pickup arrangements and settle into your chosen coastal hotel. Keep sightseeing optional. Use a transfer if you cannot legally collect and drive the car that day.
Day 2 — Sanya Have a full local day: a beach walk and hotel time, or one booked attraction that suits your party. A boat excursion replaces the local outing; it is not an extra activity to squeeze into the same day.
Day 3 — Lingshui Move to your Lingshui base. If weather and traffic allow, make one planned coastal stop before checking in. Store luggage with the hotel before a longer visit. Do not spend the day repeatedly unloading at viewpoints.
Day 4 — Lingshui Stay local around your chosen bay, or select a single family attraction after checking access and opening arrangements. Leave time for lunch and a rest. Sea-based activities depend on conditions and the operator’s decision.
Day 5 — depart Sanya Return towards Sanya, complete the car inspection and continue to the airport. Work backwards from the flight and branch handover requirements. No fixed sightseeing stop belongs on this transfer.

For an early flight: spend Day 4 in Lingshui, then return to Sanya for the night. The revised allocation is Sanya two nights, Lingshui one, Sanya one: still four nights, with an extra hotel change. For a family that wants to unpack only once, stay in Sanya for all four nights and make Lingshui optional.

Do not add Wanning, Wenchang and Haikou just because they appear on an island map. If two full beach-area days feel too quiet, choose the seven-day route instead of turning the shorter trip into a succession of transfers.

Seven-day itinerary: Haikou to Sanya along the east coast

This version uses four hotel bases. Two nights in Wanning and two in Sanya create time to explore without packing every morning. It assumes an agreed one-way rental and departure from Sanya. The sequence can be reversed when your flights favour that direction, with the same attention to arrival-day paperwork and final-night location.

Day and overnight Suggested plan Choice that controls the pace
Day 1 — Haikou Arrive and settle in. If time permits, take an easy walk around Qilou Old Street. Collect the car only when documents and handover arrangements are ready; a city arrival does not require immediate driving.
Day 2 — Wenchang Travel to Wenchang and choose one coastal or coconut-grove outing, such as the Dongjiao area. Pick a hotel near that outing. Do not combine every lighthouse, coast and space-related stop across the region.
Day 3 — Wanning Continue south towards Wanning. An agreed Qionghai-area break can divide the journey. Choose either a longer stop or an earlier hotel arrival. Keep the overnight in the same Wanning base for two nights.
Day 4 — Wanning Use a full local day around your selected bay: Riyue Bay for a surfing-focused visit, or a quieter hotel-and-coast day. A lesson needs a suitable operator, conditions and language arrangement. Watching the coast does not require entering the water.
Day 5 — Sanya Travel south, with an optional Lingshui coastal break, then check into your Sanya hotel. Lingshui is a stop, not another overnight. Skip it if weather, tiredness or traffic makes the transfer less comfortable.
Day 6 — Sanya Choose one local attraction, a suitable sea excursion, or a full day at the hotel and nearby coast. A flexible day can absorb a cancelled activity; it cannot guarantee that a boat trip will operate.
Day 7 — depart Sanya Return the vehicle and leave from Sanya. Confirm the return branch and airport connection. Allow for inspection, refuelling or charging before the handover.

These are proposed car itineraries, not fixed driving schedules. The provincial tourism route collection places Wenchang’s coconut landscapes, Wanning’s bays and the Sanya–Lingshui coast in distinct regional outings. Use those regions to choose a day’s focus. A space launch, boat departure or surf session needs its own dated arrangements; it is never guaranteed by this route.

Use scenic roads selectively, and make hotels work for the drive

Separate the journey to the next hotel from the coastal section you want to enjoy. Save the hotel entrance and one chosen stop in your navigation app; compare the available route on the day. Following every coastal bend can leave less time at the places you wanted to visit.

For each hotel, obtain the full Chinese address, parking access, check-in arrangements and a contact you can reach. Ask whether your room can be reached by lift, how far parking is from reception, and whether luggage storage is available before check-in. “Near the beach” does not explain the walk, steps or road crossings between the room and sand.

Families should confirm the correct child seat, fitting and luggage space before booking the vehicle. A nominal passenger capacity says little about boot space. Keep water, snacks, medication, rainwear and a change of clothes in a small accessible bag. On transfer days, park legally and keep valuables with you rather than leaving bags visible while the whole party goes sightseeing.

Use marked parking or a designated viewpoint for photographs. A photogenic bridge or roadside shoulder is not automatically a stopping place. Download essential addresses before leaving Wi-Fi and have a passenger handle navigation; stop safely before changing the route yourself.

Choose the season and have a useful bad-weather plan

The Hainan Meteorological Bureau’s climate overview identifies November–April as the generally drier period and May–October as the rainy season. These describe long-term patterns, not a promise for your dates. Check local forecasts and warnings for each overnight region, including the final airport transfer.

Situation Change the plan What to confirm
Ordinary rain, with no travel restriction Shorten exposed stops and use a nearby indoor visit, meal or hotel rest. Opening arrangements and a safe route; indoor attractions may have their own closing days.
Strong wind or a cancelled boat activity Keep the same overnight base and choose a land-based day. The operator’s cancellation terms. Do not replace a closed attraction with an unmanaged beach.
Typhoon warning or official movement restrictions Follow local instructions, remain in suitable accommodation and postpone optional driving. Hotel extension, rental changes and airline arrangements; sightseeing alternatives may also be closed.
Holiday congestion or a tired driver Drop the optional stop and take the suitable direct route to the hotel. Updated arrival and parking arrangements. Avoid compensating with a late-night scenic drive.

Meals, prayer and a comfortable daily rhythm

Arrange lunch near the day’s actual route rather than making every meal another excursion. Tell restaurants about allergies and ingredients that must be avoided using a written Chinese explanation. For Muslim travellers, seafood or vegetarian wording alone does not establish halal preparation: ask about meat sourcing, cooking wine, sauces and shared equipment according to your requirements.

Build prayer time into a meal or hotel break and ask for a clean, private space where needed. Do not assume every attraction, service area or coastal hotel provides a prayer room. Give the hotel any room-layout or food requirements before paying. Two-night stays are particularly useful when an older traveller or child needs a predictable lunch and rest routine.

Entry conditions and your next booking step

Immigration permission and permission to drive are separate. The National Immigration Administration’s Hainan entry policy provides eligible ordinary-passport holders from 61 countries with up to 30 days within Hainan for specified short visits. Check your nationality and complete flight sequence against the policy that applies to you. A Hainan-only admission does not by itself authorise a mainland extension or ferry drive to another province.

If you prefer an arranged sightseeing programme, compare the 10-Day Discover Hainan Island Group Tour, which starts in Haikou and ends in Sanya. Its route and service format are separate from the rental-car examples here; request the dated programme, guiding language, inclusions and departure conditions.

For broader planning, see China self-drive travel options. If a round of golf shapes your hotel choice, the Hainan golf region comparison explains the separate Haikou, Wanning and Sanya decisions.

Send VeroTrip your Hainan plans with travel dates, flight airports and times, party ages, driver documents, luggage, hotel preferences and dietary or prayer needs. Say whether you want five days with two bases or seven days along the east coast. Request a written plan specifying the transport format, pickup and return arrangements, what is included and the conditions for changes before committing.
