Choose Haikou for a city-and-food stay, Sanya for a hotel-and-coast holiday, or Wanning for a particular bay and a slower coastal interest. For three or four nights, one base can be enough. With five to seven nights, add a second region if it offers something you actually want. You do not need to circle Hainan to have a complete island holiday.
Hainan (海南) is the province and island setting; Haikou (海口), Sanya (三亚) and Wanning (万宁) are different places within it. Start with usable nights, arrival and departure points, and the kind of day you would enjoy repeating. Then choose the hotel and transport.
The main image is an illustration of an imagined coastal holiday-planning scene. It shows neither a named hotel nor actual Vero Trip guests. The Yalong Bay photograph in the body is a real historical view, not a report of today’s beach, boats or swimming conditions.
Choose the base before choosing a string of beaches
Ask whether the priority is local city life, a comfortable resort, a surf lesson, or travelling between regions. Those choices lead to different rooms and transport. A quiet hotel can be ideal for someone who wants to stay there all day and frustrating for someone who expects independent evening restaurants nearby.
| Base | Choose it for | Keep this distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Haikou | Old streets, local meals and a northern-city introduction. | A city stay is different from a southern beach-resort holiday. |
| Sanya | A coastal hotel stay with selected local or island outings. | The individual bay and property matter more than the word Sanya. |
| Wanning | A chosen coastal area, café time or a separately arranged surf interest. | Riyue Bay, Shimei Bay, Shenzhou Peninsula and Xinglong need their own local transfers. |
| Two bases | A meaningful city-and-coast or two-region contrast. | Keep enough nights to enjoy the second place after changing hotels. |
For a first short beach holiday, compare one suitable Sanya property with one suitable Wanning property rather than trying to fit both automatically. For a city-and-coast contrast, protect a full Haikou day before moving south. If a round of golf determines the base, use the Hainan golf comparison for the separate course and clubhouse decisions.
Hainan’s eastern railway and roads connect places, but a map line is not time spent enjoying them. Packing, checking out, reaching the station and settling into the next hotel all use part of a day. Two nights in a second base generally offer more than a late arrival followed by another morning checkout.
Give Haikou a city day if its culture interests you
Haikou is a useful choice for old streets, an unhurried meal and a different view of the island from a resort stay. Qilou Old Street (骑楼老街) is a living urban area with arcaded buildings, shops and local food rather than a reason to rush through every lane.
The Haikou city account’s July 2026 report describes both the heritage and everyday businesses of the district. Choose a short loop and a seated stop. Do not assume that every shop, workshop or performance mentioned in a feature operates at your arrival time.
Use one full day for the city if that is part of your reason for coming. If volcanic landscapes, a museum or another outlying interest matters, check that visit separately and add enough time for it. The northern arrival airport does not make every Haikou attraction an easy stop on the way to Sanya.
A central city hotel can support meals and street time, while a property chosen for golf or a quieter setting may have a different transport pattern. Save the exact Chinese address and ask where a vehicle can stop with luggage. A city name alone is not a meeting point.
In Sanya, choose the bay and the property together
The Sanya Tourism Board’s bay overview distinguishes city-connected Sanya Bay and Dadonghai from the resort settings of Yalong Bay and Haitang Bay. Use those differences to start a shortlist, then compare the actual property and journey to your preferred activities.
| Area | Possible priority | Ask before booking |
|---|---|---|
| Sanya Bay / city side | A city-connected stay, waterfront walks and local evenings. | The exact beach access, airport transfer, road crossing and room noise. |
| Dadonghai | A coastal stay near city restaurants and shops. | The property entrance, local walking and current managed water access. |
| Yalong Bay | A resort-focused stay with deliberate hotel time. | Which facilities and beach services belong to your room package. |
| Haitang Bay | A property-centred holiday and selected outlying visits. | Pool access, meals and transport; a beachfront room does not establish permission to swim in the sea. |
A recent repeat visitor enjoyed a quiet Haitang Bay hotel stay, while a commenter worried that the same area might feel too quiet and asked about Dadonghai. Neither reaction makes one bay universally better. Choose how much of the day you want to spend inside the property and how often you want to leave for meals or sightseeing.

Check the room category, beds, breakfast, pool access, children’s arrangements and any activity included in the rate. A panoramic photograph does not identify which building or room you are buying. A hotel recommendation from a traveller with a different budget or party size is a starting question, not a matching quotation.
Confirm the walk from room to pool or sand, road crossings, lifts, steps and available shade when these matter. A beach-facing hotel and an officially managed swimming area are different things. Follow the site’s current rules and staff directions; do not choose a sea activity solely because people appear in an old photograph.
In Wanning, choose one local area to enjoy
Wanning is not one continuous beachfront hotel district. Riyue Bay (日月湾), Shimei Bay (石梅湾), Shenzhou Peninsula (神州半岛) and inland Xinglong (兴隆) offer different settings. Decide whether you want the surf-oriented atmosphere, a particular resort coast, or a market-and-coffee interest before picking a room.
The local tourism department’s July 2026 area-based suggestions group visits around these areas. The useful idea is to stay within a coherent part of Wanning for a half or full day. A regional list does not establish the opening, price or access of every named venue on your date.
A three-day personal post listed many cafés and meals, and its comments immediately asked where to stay. Another enthusiastic account named several coastal places while also encouraging selective visits. Choose the hotel and one day’s focus before turning either list into a route. Photos and a claim of sixteen stops do not show the rest, driving or meal time your party needs.
For surfing, ask the actual provider about instruction language, participant requirements, equipment, conditions and changes. Watching the coast or sitting at a café is an equally valid day for someone who does not want a lesson. Do not treat a surf destination as permission for unsupervised swimming or assume every companion must join the water activity.
Match the number of nights to the number of bases
Three nights can support a single coastal hotel with two full local days. Four nights leave more room for a booked outing or a slower rhythm. Neither requires adding a northern city transfer when your main purpose is rest.
Five or six nights can support two meaningful bases: for example Haikou plus Sanya, or Wanning plus Sanya when you want distinct coastal settings. Consider whether the second hotel adds enough to justify another check-in. If the two properties would serve essentially the same purpose, keep the better-fitting one longer.
With a week or more, add a third region because its landscape or culture matters, rather than because an island circuit looks complete. A rainforest stay or cultural appointment inland needs its own route and weather arrangements. It is different from briefly stopping at another beach on the way south.
One recently read Sanya author used three days for arrival and a waterfront walk, a whole West Island day, and another local day. The useful lesson is to leave space, not to guarantee that the same boat, sunset or rented two-wheeler arrangement will fit your documents and conditions. Departure timing was not established for every element of that final day.
Compare the entire transfer, including the final local journey
The provincial tourism transport page identifies the eastern and western railway connections and their different stations. Use the actual 12306 service for your date, then add the hotel-to-station and station-to-hotel journeys. A Wanning or Sanya rail ticket does not deliver you to every resort entrance.
| Choice | When it can help | Include in the comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Fly into the main holiday base | A short stay with one hotel. | Actual flight terminal, arrival time, bags and hotel transfer. |
| Rail between regions | A two-base trip with manageable bags. | Correct departure and arrival stations, both local transfers and the booked service. |
| Arranged vehicle | Several travellers, bulky bags or selected stops. | Driver/guide roles, child seats, luggage capacity, waiting and full price. |
| Rental car | You want to drive and have suitable documents. | Legal driving permission, branch acceptance, insurance and return; use the specialist driving guide. |
Save each station name in Chinese and check the exact one printed on the booking. Haikou and Haikou East are different choices, as are a regional station and an airport connection. Choose the service that supports the hotel location rather than selecting only the shortest advertised train time.
For Wanning, a February 2026 city notice announced a station-to-bays tourist route. Its introductory free period ended in February and its launch timetable is not an October guarantee. Ask for the current service, stop and last departure before relying on it; otherwise arrange a suitable final transfer.
If you want to drive, the Hainan self-drive guide handles driver documents, rental branches and the five- or seven-day road examples. This guide helps choose a holiday base regardless of transport. Immigration permission, permission to drive and a rental company’s acceptance are separate requirements.
Keep boat outings and hotel days as different choices
West Island and Wuzhizhou Island are separate outings, not interchangeable words for the same beach day. Check the chosen departure point, admission and boat scope, last return and cancellation terms. Water sports, equipment and meals should be listed individually when included.
Do not book a prepaid marine activity immediately before an important flight simply because the advertised crossing is short. Boarding, queues, local transfers and a weather-related change can use more time. A full island day should replace other major visits rather than being squeezed between distant stops.
For a family, decide whether the attraction or the hotel is the main day. Ask what a non-participating adult or child can do, where bags stay and where to meet afterwards. A resort photograph does not establish childcare, supervised swimming or included activities.
A traveller who combined business and leisure described several things left for a return visit. Their unfinished wish list is a useful reminder that a holiday can end without completing every activity. Their unconfirmed statement about nationwide flying restrictions is not an aviation rule for your trip.
Choose dates with a weather and change plan
The Sanya Tourism Board’s seasonal guide identifies winter and Chinese New Year demand, shoulder periods and the summer family-holiday rise. Compare the actual room and flight dates. A social post calling the week quiet or cheap does not establish a price for your stay.
Check forecasts and warnings for each overnight area. Haikou, Wanning and Sanya need not have the same conditions on a particular day. A clear-water image, a visitor’s pleasant weekend or a comment about last year’s weather is not a forecast.
The Tourism Board’s extreme-weather guidance calls for reducing unnecessary travel during severe conditions and stopping sea activities during lightning. Follow local closures and the operator’s decision. A cancelled island trip should not be replaced by an unmanaged beach or a risky drive to find sunshine.
Ask how the hotel, activity and transport handle weather changes before payment. A room cancellation, an excursion cancellation and a disrupted flight may have different terms. Keep one flexible day where possible, while recognising that it cannot make a boat operate.
Put food, rest and practical needs into the day
Plan a proper meal near the day’s actual base. For seafood, ask the unit, weight, cooking charge and complete price before it is prepared, and retain the bill. The Tourism Board’s consumer guide explains checking displayed prices and purchase records; a cheap meal in another visitor’s post is not a quotation or a guarantee about a kitchen.
Send ingredient and preparation requirements in writing for allergies, vegetarian or halal needs. Seafood, coconut chicken and an international buffet each require their own questions about stock, fat, sauces, alcohol and shared equipment. Agree meal and prayer breaks with the day’s transport and ask about a suitable private space where needed.
For older travellers or young children, keep water, sun protection, rainwear and essential personal items accessible. Ask about shaded seating and toilets at the actual venue. An easy hotel day can still involve a long walk across a large property, and a boat outing can involve steps and waiting.
Check your entry permission against the whole flight sequence
The National Immigration Administration’s 20 August 2026 policy describes a Hainan-only visa-free stay of up to thirty days for eligible ordinary-passport holders from sixty-one countries and specified short-visit purposes. Its permitted area is Hainan Province, with entry and exit through Hainan’s open ports.
Check your nationality, passport and complete journey with the responsible authority before booking. A Hainan-only admission does not itself authorise continuing to Guangzhou, Beijing or another province. If another visa or exemption applies, its own conditions determine the permitted journey; do not combine different schemes casually.
A domestic flight, a ferry reservation or a social hashtag about visas does not settle entry eligibility. Share the intended connections before the route is priced so the practical holiday and the permission you use match.
A six-day city-and-coast example
This framework uses two Haikou nights and three Sanya nights, with arrival on Day1 and departure on Day6. It is an example for someone who wants a city day and a coastal finish. Choose a different single-base plan when beach rest is the sole priority.
| Day | Plan | Overnight / practical choice |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive in Haikou; settle in and keep dinner local. | Haikou, night1. A late arrival leaves the old streets for tomorrow. |
| 2 | A Haikou city day with Qilou Old Street and time for a seated meal. | Haikou, night2. Choose one additional interest rather than a full island circuit. |
| 3 | Transfer to the selected Sanya hotel. | Sanya, night1. Account for station transfers or the complete road journey. |
| 4 | Use the hotel and one nearby coastal area. | Sanya, night2. Rest and family time are part of the programme. |
| 5 | One booked outing if conditions permit, or another local leisure day. | Sanya, night3. A boat day replaces other major visits. |
| 6 | Depart from Sanya. | Use the actual flight time; no fixed sea activity before the airport. |
For Wanning instead, give the selected bay its own nights and local time; do not insert all its photo stops into Day3. For a longer mixed landscape holiday, compare the published ten-day Hainan group outline, which includes inland stages and a different service format. Ask for the actual departure, guide language, admissions, rooms and optional activities.
The Haikou, Wanning and Sanya pages place the bases. Send Vero Trip your dates, nationalities, complete flights, party size, ages, room needs, preferred pace, walking and food or prayer requirements. State whether the main purpose is city culture, resort rest, a selected activity or a two-base contrast. Request the complete dated arrangement and change conditions in writing.
