8-Day Northern Xinjiang Winter Self-Drive Tour: Kanas & Sayram Lake
Overview
Connect the Altay snow villages with Sayram Lake on an eight-day verotrip winter self-drive journey beginning and ending in Urumqi. The route travels through Ulungur Lake, Hemu and Kanas before turning towards Urho and the Tianshan lake country. Seven nights are planned, including a night in Hemu and a night near Sayram Lake.
A lead vehicle and route leader coordinate the convoy, stops and local arrangements. Choose an eligible own-vehicle arrangement or request a suitable 4×4 rental package. This is a supported self-drive itinerary: a passenger driver is not automatically included with your rental car. Ask for a separately quoted driver if you prefer not to drive.
The main attraction is the change of scenery: open lake horizons, timber villages under snow, the Kanas river bends, sculpted desert landforms and the wide shoreline of Sayram Lake. Winter roads, park access and daylight determine the daily pace. Photography and any aerial filming follow local permissions and the weather.

Winter driving and visitor documents
Confirm the exact vehicle, tyre and winter-equipment arrangements, rental handover and driver eligibility before paying. Overseas visitors must arrange driving documents valid in mainland China; a home licence alone should not be assumed sufficient. Hotel registration and each scenic-area entry are checked for every traveller.
Roads, lake ice and photo stops
The itinerary follows permitted roads and designated viewpoints. Do not interpret self-drive as permission to leave open routes or drive onto frozen lakes. Snow closures can require a revised road, shorter sightseeing or an additional delay. Clothing shoots, community visits and aerial filming are conditional on availability and permission.
Price and hotel confirmation
Request a quote for your travel dates, drivers, vehicle occupancy and rooming. Rental and own-car packages differ. Six hotel nights and a Hemu village stay are planned; exact properties and winter service standards are confirmed before booking. Fuel, tolls and parking for the travellers’ own or rented car remain separate.
Meal planning
A Hemu hotpot meal is included in the proposed service plan. Breakfasts depend on the confirmed hotels; other lunches and dinners are paid locally unless added to the quote. Sunrise and sunset are opportunities, not guaranteed conditions.

Daily Itinerary
Arrive in Urumqi and use the confirmed airport or station pickup to reach your hotel. Keep the remainder of the day flexible for rest or a short independent city visit. If renting, arrange collection at the agreed airport, hotel or rental location and complete the contract and vehicle inspection.
The rental company must accept the driver documents and confirm the permitted use of the vehicle. An optional visit to the regional museum, Grand Bazaar or a city park depends on arrival time and opening arrangements; city sightseeing transport is not automatically included.

Begin with a convoy briefing covering the route, communication, vehicle checks and stopping procedures. Drive north towards Ulungur Lake, allowing substantial road time and practical breaks. The broad winter lakeshore is the main photography stop of the day.
If weather and the day’s progress allow, wait for low evening light from a permitted shore viewpoint. Continue to Altay for your overnight stay. The leader adjusts the timing to actual road conditions; the itinerary’s driving estimates are not a promise of winter travel time.

Travel from Altay towards Hemu using the route that is open and authorised for the departure. Forest and mountain scenery frame the road before the village’s timber houses and snowy roofs come into view. Check in to the confirmed village accommodation and make time for photography on foot.
The Ahe road, drone filming and a village evening gathering are possible elements only when road access, permissions and local operation allow. Warm layers and suitable footwear matter after dark. Leave time to enjoy the village without adding an unconfirmed late-night activity.

Enjoy the village setting before the planned Hemu hotpot meal. Continue towards Kanas and select viewing stops around the celebrated river bends, subject to winter opening and road access. The day combines a village morning with a regional transfer, so the number of stops follows the time available.
A Tuva household visit can be arranged only when a host is available and it is included in the confirmation. Respect private homes and photography requests. Continue to Burqin for the night. Scenic winter experiences take place in authorised areas; no lake-ice driving is included.

Leave Burqin and travel towards Urho World Ghost City. Wind-eroded ridges and towers give this desert landscape its distinctive shapes; winter light and scattered snow can add strong contrasts. Visit by the scenic-area transport or driving arrangement that is actually permitted on the day.
Continue to Kuitun after the visit. This is another substantial road day, and the timing includes sightseeing, stops and winter driving conditions. Aerial filming is dependent on permission, operating rules and weather rather than being guaranteed at every viewpoint.

Drive from Kuitun to Sayram Lake and explore the shore by the permitted scenic road and designated stops. The lake, snowy mountains and changing light form the focus of the day. Seasonal installations or a lighthouse stop depend on what is operating and accessible during your visit.
The plan includes a clothing-and-prop photo opportunity; the specific selection is confirmed before departure. Stay near the lake so an evening photography stop does not require an immediate long drive away. Blue ice, clear skies and sunset colours cannot be guaranteed.

If weather and conditions allow, make a short early outing to a permitted lake viewpoint for sunrise. After breakfast and checkout, begin the long return journey to Urumqi. Rest stops, road checks and winter conditions are part of the day rather than time to fill with extra attractions.
Return the vehicle according to the agreed contract and handover schedule. Stay in Urumqi for the final night, giving the trip a buffer before the departure day. Enjoy an independently chosen dinner and read onward travel arrangements with the team.
