7-Day Altay Winter Self-Drive Photography Tour
Overview
Travel from Urumqi into the Altay snow country on a seven-day verotrip self-drive photography itinerary. The main journey links the S21 desert corridor, Ulungur Lake, Altay, Hemu and Kanas before returning through Burqin. Snow-covered timber villages, river bends and broad winter skies shape the photographic theme.
The original route includes a Baihaba overnight and a border-area viewpoint. Those sections are conditional: traveller eligibility, local access rules and any required approval must be confirmed before booking. They are not guaranteed for overseas visitors. If approval is unavailable, request a revised Kanas / Burqin route and accommodation plan before payment.
A convoy leader and lead vehicle coordinate the journey, while photography support helps make use of the available light. The rental option supplies the agreed 4×4 arrangement; guests still need an eligible driver for their vehicle. Winter weather may change the road sequence, stopping time and photographic opportunities.

What makes this journey distinctive
- Hemu’s timber-village setting and Kanas winter river views.
- A northbound desert-and-lake journey through the S21 corridor.
- Six overnight stays with the rooming and border section confirmed in advance.
- Photography support on permitted routes and viewpoints.
Planning your journey
Baihaba and border-area access
Do not treat an enquiry or a tour booking as permission to enter a restricted area. Provide nationality and identification details through the booking process so verotrip can check the actual route eligibility and authorisation. A non-border alternative must be agreed before payment if the source route cannot be confirmed.
Convoy driving
Use only open, permitted roads; the phrase off-road-style vehicle describes the car rather than permission to cross protected woodland. The exact rental model, winter equipment, insurance cover, assistance limits and valid-driver documents are checked in advance.
Winter experiences
Hemu evening activities, community gatherings and photographic stops depend on local operation and conditions. No boiling-water throwing activity is included in this web itinerary. Drone operation is conditional on permissions and weather; there is no guaranteed aerial image at each stop.
Accommodation and price
The source plan contains four city-hotel nights and two village nights at Hemu and, if approved, Baihaba. If the border segment changes, the revised lodging plan and total price are confirmed before booking. This page accepts enquiries rather than guaranteeing a dated departure or an unspecified insurance amount.
Request your verotrip quotation
Send your preferred dates, number of travellers, room preferences, arrival and departure details, and any driving, walking or dietary requirements. Your quotation will confirm the actual services, availability and total price before booking.

Daily Itinerary

Arrive in Urumqi and transfer to the confirmed hotel. If using the rental option, complete the contract, driver-document check and vehicle inspection at the agreed handover point. Leave time to organise winter clothing and luggage before the convoy starts.
An independent museum, bazaar or park visit can be considered if arrival time allows. These optional city activities do not include additional vehicle use unless specified in the quote. Rest well ahead of the longer journey north.
Route: Urumqi arrival
Overnight: Urumqi
Meals: Meals independently arranged

Meet for the route briefing, then head north through the S21 desert corridor. The scenery changes between open sand country, sparse vegetation and winter snow patches. Use designated service areas for breaks and keep to the convoy’s agreed communication and spacing.
At Ulungur Lake, stop at a permitted shore viewpoint and use the available light for photographs. Sunset is a possibility when weather and road progress align. Continue to Altay for the night; actual driving time is governed by winter conditions.
Route: Urumqi → S21 corridor → Ulungur Lake → Altay
Overnight: Altay
Meals: Breakfast if provided by the hotel; other meals separate

Travel from Altay into the Hemu area along the route open to your departure. The village’s timber houses, heavy snowy roofs and birch trees offer a distinct change from the desert corridor. Check in to the confirmed village lodging and explore the permitted visitor areas on foot.
An organised evening gathering may be available depending on local operation. Photography focuses on the village and changing winter light, with clothing and footing suited to cold conditions. There is no promise of a particular snowfall or staged ice effect.
Route: Altay → Hemu
Overnight: Hemu village
Meals: Meals as listed in the final hotel and service confirmation

Leave Hemu for the open Kanas sightseeing route, selecting viewpoints around the river bends according to access and daylight. Snow-covered banks, conifers and winter mist are photographic possibilities. All vehicles remain on authorised roads.
Continue to Baihaba only when entry eligibility and required permissions have been confirmed. Otherwise, follow the replacement overnight plan agreed before booking, which may remain in the Kanas area or continue towards Burqin. A named viewpoint or solitary-tree stop is included only if it is open and accessible.
Route: Hemu → Kanas → Baihaba only if approved
Overnight: Baihaba only if approved; otherwise the agreed alternative
Meals: Meals as itemised before booking

If the Baihaba section is authorised, explore the local village and approved viewpoint arrangements named in your confirmation. Border-area access is never assumed, and restricted infrastructure is not a photography subject in the programme.
If the border section is unavailable, use the agreed alternative morning in the Kanas or Burqin area. Continue to Burqin for the overnight stay. A Five-Coloured Beach stop can be considered only when it is open, time permits and the extra charge or inclusion has been confirmed.
Route: Approved local route → Burqin
Overnight: Burqin
Meals: Breakfast if provided by the hotel; other meals separate

Begin the return drive to Urumqi, using the open highway route and planned service-area breaks. Desert light, snow patches and the long horizon provide a final landscape contrast to the forested Altay valleys.
Arrive in Urumqi, complete the agreed vehicle-return or overnight parking arrangement and settle into the hotel. Keep this evening flexible for dinner and rest rather than adding a tight onward connection after a winter road day.
Route: Burqin → S21 corridor → Urumqi
Overnight: Urumqi
Meals: Breakfast if provided by the hotel; other meals separate

Check out and take the departure transfer confirmed for your airport or railway service. Complete any remaining rental handover or luggage arrangements before the check-in deadline.
The journey ends in Urumqi. Your onward transport is separate unless specifically included in the signed booking confirmation.
Route: Urumqi hotel → airport or station
Overnight: Tour ends
Meals: Meals as provided by the hotel or arranged independently
