Route: Dali → Xizhou → Zhoucheng → Shaxi → Dali

Overnight plan: 3 nights in Dali, 3 nights in Shaxi. The final day is departure.

When to travel

Visits work year-round with seasonal weather adjustments. Outdoor dye drying and rural walks need a flexible plan in rainy periods.

How your private trip works

The day plan leaves room for meals, comfort stops and the pace of your party. Road times are planning estimates and may lengthen in rain or holiday traffic. Your final proposal confirms the meeting point, hotels, private vehicle, guiding language, included admissions and any booked workshops before payment. Domestic flights and trains are included only when itemised in that proposal. Travel insurance, personal purchases and meals not specified remain separate.

Tell us your dates, number of travellers, ages of children, walking preferences and preferred room arrangement. We can shorten walks and adjust departure times while keeping the overnight route practical. Hosted visits depend on the host’s availability; no shopping purchase is required.

Daily Itinerary

White walls and tiled roofs in Dali Old Town
White walls and tiled roofs in Dali Old Town

Meet at Dali airport or railway station and transfer to your hotel. After a rest, take a short orientation walk near the old town if the arrival time allows. Find a convenient dinner spot and discuss how much walking or cycling your party wants. The first afternoon is deliberately flexible, so a delayed train does not mean missing an essential visit.

Overnight: Dali. Travel and walking: Allow 45–90 minutes for the local transfer according to the hotel.

Bai courtyard houses in Xizhou
Bai courtyard houses in Xizhou

Head north to Xizhou for a morning among Bai courtyard houses and quieter lanes. Your guide selects a manageable walking route and introduces local snacks, with time to sit down rather than eat while rushing between stops. After lunch, pause beside the farmland on established paths and return to Dali in the afternoon. Seasonal crops change the view, so the day is about the village and its setting, not a promised flower field.

Overnight: Dali. Travel and walking: Around 1.5–2 hours of total driving from a Dali old-town base.

Indigo tie-dyed cloth in a Zhoucheng courtyard

Visit a prearranged tie-dye workshop in Zhoucheng and learn how tying and dyeing create patterns in cotton. A simple hands-on piece can be included when the host confirms the activity and drying time. After lunch, walk a short section of the western lake corridor or sit beside the water. Your private car uses permitted roads and meets you at an agreed access point rather than entering a protected cycling path.

Overnight: Dali. Travel and walking: Local road travel around 1.5–2 hours; short walking sections.

A quiet courtyard and old street in Shaxi
A quiet courtyard and old street in Shaxi

Leave Dali after breakfast and drive to Shaxi with a break. Check in, have lunch and spend the afternoon around Sideng’s old streets and square. Keep the first walk compact so there is time to sit over tea and enjoy the quieter setting. Shaxi has no direct railway connection; the road transfer is part of the itinerary and should not be squeezed between two same-day train reservations.

Overnight: Shaxi. Travel and walking: Allow around 2.5–3.5 hours by road with a break.

A stone bridge and countryside beside Shaxi

Walk from the old town towards the riverside and Yujin Bridge on a suitable local route. Pause at field edges and return for lunch before a prearranged craft conversation or free afternoon. The valley rewards a slower pace, especially in early or late light. A market visit is added only when the actual market day matches your stay; it is not promised every morning.

Overnight: Shaxi. Travel and walking: Local walks, around 3–5 km if desired, with shorter options.

Weathered stone and forest paths in the Shibaoshan area
Weathered stone and forest paths in the Shibaoshan area

Take a guided outing to the Shibaoshan area, selecting currently open sites and a walking route that suits your comfort with steps. The visit can focus on woodland and a modest heritage circuit rather than a long hike. Return to Shaxi after lunch and keep the afternoon relaxed. Specific grotto access and photography rules are confirmed locally, with no promise of entering every site.

Overnight: Shaxi. Travel and walking: Approximately 1–1.5 hours of total driving; steps and walking adjusted.

Erhai Lake and the Cangshan foothills in Dali
Erhai Lake and the Cangshan foothills in Dali

Leave Shaxi after breakfast for Dali, taking a road break and finishing at the hotel or agreed departure point. Keep a separate buffer if you have an onward train or flight. The return day does not include a full sightseeing programme; an afternoon lakeside stop is optional only when the transport schedule leaves enough time.

Overnight: Departure. Travel and walking: Allow around 2.5–3.5 hours by road, plus onward check-in time.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The lakeside outing can be a short walk and cafe stop. If you cycle, the guide selects a manageable segment and checks current access; the itinerary does not require a full Erhai circuit.

The pace can be adapted with shorter walks, earlier returns and suitable room access. Tell us ages, mobility needs and whether you need child seats before booking, since availability must be confirmed.

A named workshop and any hands-on activity are confirmed with a willing host for your dates. Drying or shipping a tie-dye or pottery item can take additional time. A hosted visit is not a compulsory shopping stop.

Dali Old Town or a nearby accessible property works well for varied outings. Xizhou suits a quieter village stay. The final proposal confirms the exact hotel, room type and road access rather than promising a generic view room.

We can shorten the ride, replace it with walking or use a courtyard and food visit. Lake paths, mountain routes and outdoor activities are selected according to current conditions.
