Is this trip right for you?

Travellers who value a gradual overland route and a long final stay, with coffee interests and moderate outdoor activity.

Route: Dali → Baoshan → Lujiang valley → Tengchong and Heshun

Overnight plan: 1 night in Dali, 1 night in Baoshan, 7 nights in Tengchong or Heshun. The final day is departure.

When to travel

Spring and autumn offer a useful balance of temperature and outdoor time. Summer rain can alter forest walks; winter mornings need an extra layer.

How your private trip works

The day plan leaves room for meals, comfort stops and the pace of your party. Road times are planning estimates and may lengthen in rain or holiday traffic. Your final proposal confirms the meeting point, hotels, private vehicle, guiding language, included admissions and any booked workshops before payment. Domestic flights and trains are included only when itemised in that proposal. Travel insurance, personal purchases and meals not specified remain separate.

Tell us your dates, number of travellers, ages of children, walking preferences and preferred room arrangement. We can shorten walks and adjust departure times while keeping the overnight route practical. Hosted visits depend on the host’s availability; no shopping purchase is required.

Daily Itinerary

Erhai Lake and the Cangshan foothills in Dali
Erhai Lake and the Cangshan foothills in Dali

Meet at Dali’s airport or railway station and transfer to your hotel. If arrival time allows, take an easy lake-facing walk on an accessible part of the Erhai shore. Keep the evening light before the westward journey. This route uses Dali as a comfortable gateway to western Yunnan rather than trying to cover all of Dali’s sights in an arrival afternoon.

Overnight: Dali. Travel and walking: Local transfer usually 45–90 minutes, depending on hotel and arrival point.

Tree-lined paths in Baoshan
Tree-lined paths in Baoshan

Drive west after breakfast, allowing time for a road break and lunch before settling into Baoshan. Spend the later afternoon on a gentle city-park walk and discuss the coffee visit planned for tomorrow. The day is deliberately modest: it breaks a long westward journey into stages and avoids arriving at a rural host after dark.

Overnight: Baoshan. Travel and walking: Dali to Baoshan: allow around 3–4 hours with a break.

Leave Baoshan early for a prearranged coffee-farm visit in the Lujiang valley. Walk a short section with the host and taste a locally prepared cup; harvesting and processing depend on the season. After lunch, continue towards Tengchong and check in for a quiet evening. This is the fullest transfer day of the journey, so keep the farm session focused and avoid extra roadside attractions.

Overnight: Tengchong or Heshun. Travel and walking: Allow roughly 4–5 hours of total driving, plus a 1.5–2 hour farm visit and lunch.

Spend the day in Heshun, following a walking route that links lanes and waterside views with a selected courtyard or heritage building. A guide explains the town’s trading and overseas family connections without turning the visit into a sequence of shops. Break for lunch and a seated tea stop, then explore a quieter lane in the afternoon. Steps and cobbles mean the pace is adjusted to your group.

Overnight: Tengchong or Heshun. Travel and walking: Short transfers; several gentle walks with steps and rests.

Steam rising from Tengchong’s geothermal landscape
Steam rising from Tengchong’s geothermal landscape

Visit Rehai on the established paths to see the geothermal landscape, keeping safely away from hot-water features. After lunch, return to a managed bathing facility if you have chosen that option in your proposal. Natural boiling springs are for viewing, not bathing. Travellers who prefer not to soak can use the afternoon for a cafe or rest, with no claim that a hot spring visit treats any medical condition.

Overnight: Tengchong or Heshun. Travel and walking: Usually 1–1.5 hours of driving in total, plus a 2–3 hour scenic visit.

A forested volcanic cone near Tengchong

Head north for a focused volcano-park visit. Choose the walking route according to the steps you are comfortable with, and pause to understand the shape of the old volcanic cones. A lower viewpoint is an option if you prefer not to climb. Return after lunch and leave the afternoon flexible. Balloon flights and other weather-dependent activities are not assumed to operate or included without a separate booking.

Overnight: Tengchong or Heshun. Travel and walking: Allow around 1.5–2 hours of driving in total; stair climbing is optional.

Reeds and open water at Beihai Wetland near Tengchong
Reeds and open water at Beihai Wetland near Tengchong

Visit Beihai in the morning and explore the open-water and reed landscape from the official paths. Use a boat only if it is operating, suitable for your group and included in your confirmed plan. Take lunch at an unhurried pace, then return to your hotel with the afternoon free. This is a landscape outing, not a promise of particular birds or wildlife sightings.

Overnight: Tengchong or Heshun. Travel and walking: Around 1–1.5 hours of total driving; easy paths with a shorter option.

Forested Gaoligong foothills in western Yunnan
Forested Gaoligong foothills in western Yunnan

Take a locally guided outing on an established route in the Gaoligong foothills that is open for your dates. Keep the walk to roughly two hours with stops for forest details and views. Access to protected core areas is not assumed. If heavy rain makes the path unsuitable, replace it with a Heshun heritage visit and a longer lunch rather than pushing through unsafe conditions.

Overnight: Tengchong or Heshun. Travel and walking: Allow 2–3 hours of road travel in total; walking route confirmed locally.

Enjoy a late breakfast and time at your hotel before meeting your guide for a short afternoon walk in Heshun. Revisit a favourite courtyard, sit over tea or browse a small local craft shop with no purchase requirement. Keeping this day loose gives the longer journey breathing space and allows an earlier weather-affected visit to be moved here when practical.

Overnight: Tengchong or Heshun. Travel and walking: Local transfers only; walking entirely adjustable.

Have breakfast and depart for Tengchong Tuofeng Airport at the agreed time. A short local stop is possible only if the flight schedule leaves enough room; the standard plan prioritises an easy departure. If continuing by road to another western Yunnan city, arrange that transfer separately with its own travel allowance rather than treating it as an airport run.

Overnight: Departure. Travel and walking: Usually 30–60 minutes to the airport, plus carrier check-in time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. A Heshun or city base allows separate outings to Rehai, Beihai and the volcano area, with rests between them. Tell us about stairs and walking limits so we can select suitable paths and accommodation.

The hot-water features at Rehai are viewed from designated paths. Bathing is only at a managed facility with its own operating guidance. Follow the posted instructions and choose a non-bathing afternoon if you prefer.

Your proposal itemises the selected hotel, transfers, admissions and any bathing session. Flights are included only when specifically listed. A landscape image does not identify a promised resort or room.

Yes, a one-way route works well with an overnight stay in Mangshi. Allow approximately 2.5–3.5 hours for the road journey with a break. Confirm flights into one city and out of the other before finalising.

Wetland, mountain and volcano plans depend on current conditions. A town-based heritage visit, tea stop or rest period can replace an unsuitable outdoor outing. Your guide confirms changes with you while keeping the overnight route practical.
