Route: Kunming → Stone Forest → Mile → Jianshui → Yuanyang → Mengzi → Kunming

Overnight plan: 1 night in Kunming, 2 nights in Mile, 2 nights in Jianshui, 3 nights in Yuanyang terraces, 1 night in Mengzi. The final day is departure.

When to travel

November to April often suits terrace reflections; other months show changing rice growth. Summer rain may alter walking and road plans.

How your private trip works

The day plan leaves room for meals, comfort stops and the pace of your party. Road times are planning estimates and may lengthen in rain or holiday traffic. Your final proposal confirms the meeting point, hotels, private vehicle, guiding language, included admissions and any booked workshops before payment. Domestic flights and trains are included only when itemised in that proposal. Travel insurance, personal purchases and meals not specified remain separate.

Tell us your dates, number of travellers, ages of children, walking preferences and preferred room arrangement. We can shorten walks and adjust departure times while keeping the overnight route practical. Hosted visits depend on the host’s availability; no shopping purchase is required.

Daily Itinerary

Willows and water beside Green Lake in Kunming
Willows and water beside Green Lake in Kunming

Meet your driver at the airport or railway station and settle into Kunming. If time permits, stretch your legs near Green Lake and try a simple local dinner. The first day stays flexible around your arrival rather than requiring a long excursion. Your guide checks photography interests, dietary needs and the forecast for the rice terraces later in the trip.

Overnight: Kunming. Travel and walking: Airport or station transfer; allow 45–90 minutes according to traffic.

Limestone pinnacles in the Stone Forest near Kunming
Limestone pinnacles in the Stone Forest near Kunming

Leave after breakfast for the Stone Forest and follow a selected walking loop through the limestone formations. Pause for lunch before continuing south-east to Mile. This is a full touring and transfer day, so leave the hotel early and skip optional shopping stops. Settle into your next base in time for dinner rather than adding a late attraction after the drive.

Overnight: Mile. Travel and walking: Roughly 3.5–4.5 hours of total driving plus a 2–3 hour Stone Forest visit.

Vineyards and low hills near Mile in Honghe
Vineyards and low hills near Mile in Honghe

Take a gentle countryside outing around Mile, with a vineyard landscape walk where public access or a host appointment permits. Discuss local grape growing and regional food without assuming a particular winery is open. Return to town after lunch for a quiet afternoon. This slower day separates yesterday’s road journey from the next heritage town and gives you time to enjoy the region beyond a single photo stop.

Overnight: Mile. Travel and walking: Local outing; approximately 1–2 hours of driving in total.

Historic tiled roofs and a lane in Jianshui
Historic tiled roofs and a lane in Jianshui

Drive to Jianshui after breakfast and check in around lunchtime. Spend the afternoon on a walk through old streets, pausing for courtyard architecture, local wells and grilled tofu. A guide helps you select a manageable route rather than treating the entire historic centre as one continuous walk. Dinner can focus on local home-style dishes with spice levels adapted to your group.

Overnight: Jianshui. Travel and walking: Mile to Jianshui: allow around 2.5–3.5 hours with a break.

Woodwork and stone paving in a Tuanshan courtyard
Woodwork and stone paving in a Tuanshan courtyard

Visit Tuanshan for a closer look at traditional courtyards and timber detailing, then return towards Jianshui for lunch. A prearranged pottery visit introduces the purple-clay tradition; hands-on work is included only if a suitable host and drying or shipping arrangements are confirmed. The historic tourist train can replace part of the road journey when its timetable fits, but is not essential to the day.

Overnight: Jianshui. Travel and walking: Local road transfers around 1–1.5 hours in total; village walking with steps.

Layered rice terraces across the Bada valley in Yuanyang

Leave Jianshui after breakfast for the mountain road to the terrace area. Stop for lunch and arrive at your guesthouse with time to rest before a Bada viewpoint visit if visibility allows. You stay up in the terrace villages rather than down in the newer county town. Do not plan a fixed sunset deadline: road conditions and cloud cover decide whether the first evening is for photographs or a relaxed dinner.

Overnight: Yuanyang terraces. Travel and walking: Allow 3.5–4.5 hours of driving plus lunch and comfort stops.

Dawn reflections in the Duoyishu rice terraces
Dawn reflections in the Duoyishu rice terraces

Set out early for Duoyishu, allowing time to reach the viewpoint before the changing dawn light. Return to your guesthouse for breakfast and a rest instead of continuing directly into a packed day. In the afternoon, walk a selected village lane and look across the fields from established paths. Your guide chooses the later viewpoint according to the light; a misty morning is a reason to slow down, not to make risky roadside stops.

Overnight: Yuanyang terraces. Travel and walking: Short local drives; early start, midday rest and adjustable walking.

Water channels beside working rice terraces in Yuanyang

Use a second full terrace day for a guided village-edge walk, looking at how water reaches the fields and how farming shapes the contours. Stay on established routes and ask before entering private plots. Lunch and a long rest break divide the day. The later afternoon remains flexible for another viewpoint, giving photographers a second chance without promising the same light or crop condition as a promotional photograph.

Overnight: Yuanyang terraces. Travel and walking: Local drives and roughly 2–4 km of optional uneven walking.

Lakeside scenery in Mengzi, Honghe

After a final mountain breakfast, descend to Mengzi with a comfort stop along the way. Try crossing-the-bridge rice noodles at lunch and ask the restaurant to explain how to combine the ingredients. Walk beside Nanhu in the later afternoon, keeping the pace easy after the winding drive. Staying in Mengzi makes the journey back towards Kunming a separate, manageable final stage.

Overnight: Mengzi. Travel and walking: Allow approximately 3–4 hours from the terrace villages, depending on roads.

Low hills along the road through Honghe, Yunnan

Travel to Kunming after breakfast, using either a reserved train connection from the appropriate station or a private road transfer confirmed in your proposal. Avoid relying on the shortest online journey time when booking an onward flight: station access and check-in are separate. The standard finish is at a Kunming hotel or station; airport delivery is arranged only with a sufficiently late departure.

Overnight: Departure. Travel and walking: Mengzi to Kunming: road allowance around 4–5 hours, or confirmed rail schedule plus transfers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Water-filled reflections are generally associated with the post-harvest and winter period, often roughly November to April. Individual fields follow farming needs and weather, so the whole landscape is not uniformly flooded. Summer brings growing rice and a different green appearance.

No. Mist, low cloud and rain can hide a viewpoint. Staying several nights gives more opportunities, and your guide adjusts the order where possible. We do not guarantee a particular colour, cloud layer or visibility.

The route uses accommodation in the terrace area, such as around Duoyishu or Shengcun, rather than the lower county town. The exact property, bathroom, heating and vehicle access are confirmed before booking.

A local guide selects established paths suitable for current conditions. Bunds can be narrow, muddy and part of working farms. Short viewpoint walks are available for travellers who do not want longer uneven paths; private fields are not treated as public trails.

Bring a rain cover, a warm layer for dawn, spare batteries and a stable tripod if you use one. Viewpoints can be busy, so keep walkways clear. Drone use is not included and requires current local permission and suitable conditions.
