Xi’an Calligraphy & Folk Arts: Stele Forest and Shuyuanmen
Overview
Build a city day around stone inscriptions, the writing-material shops of Shuyuanmen and a separately arranged shadow-puppet activity. The Stele Forest is the main museum visit; the surrounding streets give the day a different pace. This route suits travellers interested in written culture and craft rather than another Terracotta Warriors excursion.

Your route at a glance
| Part | Plan | Overnight |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Xi’an → Stele Forest Museum → Shuyuanmen → arranged folk-art session → hotel | No hotel night |
What makes this route work
Choose a few inscription or stone-sculpture themes to follow inside the museum, with interpretation matched to your language and interests. In Shuyuanmen, leave time to browse brushes, paper and carving rather than promising a formal lesson at every shop. A puppet demonstration or workshop needs an agreed venue and session.

Choose the pace and optional elements
Hands-on activities are optional and subject to a named host’s availability. Do not assume that historic steles may be touched or rubbed as a visitor activity. A Datang evening walk is an extension after a rest, not a reason to rush the museum or add a long late-night transfer.

Daily Itinerary
Xi’an → Stele Forest Museum → Shuyuanmen → arranged folk-art session → hotel
Visit the Stele Forest Museum on its current admission basis, selecting a manageable sequence of inscriptions and sculpture displays. Continue to Shuyuanmen for the living trade in writing materials and small crafts. After lunch, attend a confirmed shadow-puppet demonstration or introductory workshop if one has been arranged. Otherwise use that time for more street browsing or a shorter museum day. Keep any later Datang walk separate in timing, so the core visit can finish comfortably without an obligatory evening programme.
Stay: No hotel night. Meals: as specified in the dated itinerary; a meal stop in this outline is not an automatic meal inclusion.
