8-Day Yubeng & Meili Journey from Kunming: 7 Nights
Overview
Explore northern Yunnan over eight days and seven nights, combining a Yubeng village stay and permitted Sacred Waterfall walking with Meili mountain views, Shangri-La and Lijiang. The journey starts and ends in Kunming, using train connections and road transfers between the city stays. It suits travellers comfortable with mountain accommodation, changing weather and sustained walking.
The mountain section has only one night in Yubeng. Day 4 combines the waterfall walk, village exit and a transfer to Feilaisi; it requires an early start and a realistic turnaround. Choose a longer stay if you want a gentler pace. Your personalised itinerary lists the village access service, walking support, hotels and transport before booking.
Journey highlights
- Two Feilaisi nights, with a chance of Meili views when the sky is clear.
- A Yubeng guesthouse stay and a Sacred Waterfall outing, subject to the permitted route and day’s conditions.
- Shangri-La’s wetland scenery and Tibetan monasteries, followed by Lijiang’s old town.
- A developed Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge visit, with no restricted High Trail hiking.
- Kunming at both ends, with train connections integrated into the journey.

Walking, altitude and lawful access
Yubeng access and the waterfall walk are separate decisions. This itinerary uses the authorised Xidang–Yubeng village shuttle for arrival and departure, with a guesthouse in the Lower Yubeng area where available. Your confirmation identifies the actual drop-off, hotel approach, luggage arrangements and walking limits. Do not assume that a village vehicle reaches the guesthouse door or the waterfall. Porters, horses and rental equipment require their own arrangement.
High mountain walking is not suitable for everyone. Keep the first high-altitude evening quiet and tell the guide if you feel unwell. NHS altitude guidance advises gradual ascent and not going higher when symptoms develop. Seek urgent help for severe symptoms such as breathlessness at rest, confusion or loss of coordination. Discuss the itinerary with a clinician if health or rapid-ascent concerns apply.
This journey excludes Ice Lake, Sacred Lake, Nise and other prohibited undeveloped Meili routes. The Deqin notice identifies these restrictions. Sacred Waterfall is a different destination; its day-specific operating status still needs to be checked.
At Tiger Leaping Gorge, this version uses the developed Upper Gorge scenic visit. The Shangri-La notice prohibits the High Trail and Middle Gorge. A guesthouse booking or guide does not override that restriction.
Meals and services
Seven breakfasts and eleven main meals are planned: lunch and dinner on Days 2–6, plus lunch on Day 7. Day 1 meals, Day 7 dinner and Day 8 lunch and dinner are at your own expense. Discuss dietary needs and meal preparation early; a rural guesthouse has fewer alternatives than a city.
The service basis includes seven accommodation nights, a licensed touring vehicle with a seat for each traveller, an English-speaking licensed tour guide and first-entry tickets to the agreed attractions. Rail tickets and class, village shuttle tickets, internal scenic transport, painting-workshop materials and any additional specialist mountain leader are itemised separately in your trip proposal. A touring-coach service does not include the village shuttle, and an attraction admission does not automatically include internal transport.
Getting into Yubeng and planning the waterfall day
The September 2026 interview with the village-shuttle operator describes an authorised service from Xidang, with no private-car or motorcycle access. It operates according to demand rather than a fixed hourly timetable. Current boarding arrangements and the final departure need reconfirming for your date.
For the waterfall walk, allow around 5–6 hours, with distance depending on the actual starting point. Do not add a Ninong canyon exit walk afterwards. This route returns to the village for the shuttle back toward Xidang, then continues by road to Feilaisi. If a comfortable walk will not fit the available exit window, shorten the walk or arrange a longer village stay before travel.
Before you book
Send recent hiking experience and your usual comfortable walking day, along with travel dates and room preferences. Allow approximately 12–14 km and 5–6 hours for the Sacred Waterfall return walk, depending on your guesthouse, walking pace and conditions. This is a planning range, not a guaranteed completion time. The guide sets an early start and a turnaround that leaves room for the village exit. The shuttle portion is separate from walking time; allow for queues rather than relying on an hourly departure. The one-night village plan needs particular care if anyone walks slowly or needs extra rest.
Bring grippy hiking footwear, a waterproof outer layer, warm layers, sun protection, a headlamp, a small daypack, water and suitable food. Keep passport, personal medication and valuables with you. Ask for insurance that covers the actual walking activities, elevation and emergency evacuation; a standard tour policy is not automatically sufficient.
Mountain access, weather or health can change the day. Agree a lawful alternative and the applicable change or cancellation terms before payment. Do not use a prohibited trail to preserve a promised hiking objective. For a slower version, add time around the Yubeng stay rather than rushing the return transfer.

Daily Itinerary
Arrive in Kunming and meet the arranged airport transfer. Check in and rest after your journey. There is no scheduled sightseeing or included meal today. Keep your passport accessible and confirm the next morning’s railway-station pickup before turning in.
Stay: Kunming. Meals: No meals.
After breakfast, travel by the reserved train to Shangri-La. Meet the road vehicle and continue past the Napahai wetland landscape toward Feilaisi. Water levels and the appearance of the meadows change with the season. Keep stops gentle after the rise in elevation. Settle into your accommodation with the next day’s access plan and luggage arrangements agreed.
Stay: Feilaisi. Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

After breakfast, transfer from Feilaisi to Xidang and use the authorised village shuttle into Yubeng. Settle into the agreed guesthouse, preferably in the Lower Yubeng area for the following morning’s walk. Keep any local stroll short and save the waterfall for Day 4. Travel with an overnight bag if large luggage is stored at the agreed collection point; the last section to your room may involve slopes or steps.
Stay: Yubeng guesthouse. Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Start early for the permitted Sacred Waterfall return walk, normally around 12–14 km and 5–6 hours depending on your base and pace. Follow the maintained route and the guide’s turnaround decision. Return to the village, collect your overnight bag and take the authorised shuttle out toward Xidang. Meet the road vehicle and continue to Feilaisi. The shuttle, queue and road journey are additional to walking time; a shorter walk is needed if conditions threaten the departure window.
Stay: Feilaisi. Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
If the weather allows, watch the morning light on the Meili mountains before breakfast. Clear mountain views and golden light are never guaranteed. Travel toward Shangri-La with planned stops at the Jinsha River bend and Dongzhulin Monastery, followed by Songzanlin Monastery when the day’s road time permits. Keep the final visit flexible rather than rushing through a long transfer day.
Stay: Shangri-La. Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Travel south from Shangri-La and visit the developed Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge scenic area when operating. Follow the managed visitor route and choose your walking according to the steps and conditions on the day. This version does not include Halfway, the High Trail, Middle Gorge or the waterfall-side trail. Continue to Lijiang and spend the night there, ready for the following morning’s city visits.
Stay: Lijiang. Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

After breakfast, visit Black Dragon Pool and Lijiang Old Town, then take part in the arranged thangka-painting experience. Timing depends on the actual workshop reservation and train. Travel back to Kunming and check into the hotel for the final night. Lunch is included; dinner is at your own expense. Keep this evening simple after the train journey.
Stay: Kunming. Meals: Breakfast and lunch; dinner at your own expense.

After breakfast, visit Dounan Flower Market and Kunming Old Street when your flight time leaves a suitable window. An early flight needs a direct airport transfer instead. Finish with the arranged Kunming airport transfer. Lunch and dinner are at your own expense, and there is no overnight accommodation after Day 8.
Stay: No overnight accommodation. Meals: Breakfast; lunch and dinner at your own expense.
