Plan Kuqa, Aksu and Hotan with focused local days, cave-visit questions, foreign passports, real intercity connections and Duku closure alternatives.

Choose Kuqa, Aksu and Hotan for a southern Xinjiang journey focused on cave art, oasis towns and regional history, with separate days for the long connections. Kuqa and Aksu form a useful first section; Hotan is a further destination, not a short excursion to add after the same day’s sightseeing. Choose two bases well rather than fitting three names into too little time.

The Duku Highway entered winter closure at 20:00 on 8 October 2026. Do not build a current journey around driving across the Tianshan on that road. Kuqa’s cultural visits and the wider southern Xinjiang itinerary are separate decisions; each selected attraction and approach still needs its own current arrangements.

Updated 24 October 2026. The opening image is an illustration of a generic oasis-town visit, not an actual Kuqa or Hotan street, shop, customer or present visitor conditions.

Choose two bases or a longer three-base journey

Start with the interest that makes each stop worthwhile. Kuqa, also written Kucha, is a base for exploring the region’s Buddhist art and historic context. Aksu can provide a different city and regional stay. Hotan, also written Hetian, adds its own history, museum and craft interests, with a substantial further connection.

Structure Choose it when Protect in the calendar
Kuqa and Aksu Cave art, selected city visits and a manageable regional section are the priorities. Real arrival, a dedicated Kuqa-region visit, intercity transfer and an Aksu local day.
Kuqa, Aksu and Hotan Hotan history or a specifically arranged craft visit justifies the further journey. Extra local nights and the actual long connection, not a brief afternoon addition.
Add Kashgar The old city and its regional interests are another main objective. Separate Kashgar nights and connections; do not count only an arrival evening.
Add a northern mountain route The season, current roads, documents and extra time allow a separate section. Duku currently winter-closed; choose accepted alternatives or a future reopening.

For a focused first trip, a useful planning starting point is three nights in Kuqa and two in Aksu, giving each a proper local day and keeping arrival and transfer time visible. Add two or three Hotan nights and the actual connection time when that region is a priority. These are suggested allocations, not a claim that every attraction or transport combination is available.

Use the Xinjiang region comparison before combining this section with the northern mountains or Kashgar. The province’s full map is not a one-week sightseeing list. If you want Kashgar as well, add its actual travel and city nights rather than treating it as a brief gateway stop.

Kuqa: give the cave visit its own place in the day

Kizil, or Kezi’er / 克孜尔, is a cave site in Baicheng County, visited as part of the wider Kuqa-region plan. It should not be confused with similarly named sites or assumed to sit beside the city hotel. Ask for the exact entrance, road transfer and the accepted visit for your date and party.

The regional tourism authority’s February 2026 institutional directory identifies the Kuqa research and cave-support bodies responsible for heritage display and visitor guidance. Use the responsible institution’s current visitor instructions. An administrative office’s working hours are not the cave attraction’s opening schedule.

Ask which caves or exhibitions are included, whether the visit follows an organised group, how foreign passports are recorded, the available interpretation language, and any age or mobility conditions. Ordinary entry and a specially arranged visit are different products. Do not buy a “special cave” promise without the actual institution’s acceptance and terms.

The official Kizil heritage-protection rules prohibit damage, climbing and touching murals and require permission for specified photography. Follow the current staff instructions inside the caves. A cave visit is not an opportunity to enter an unassigned chamber or reproduce a photograph taken under different permissions.

Keep time afterwards for a meal and a selective city or exhibition visit if the return allows it. Adding a distant canyon, every archaeological site and an evening performance can turn a worthwhile art visit into a rushed car day. Choose one second stop only when the actual location, access and party’s energy fit.

Aksu: decide which local day you actually want

Use Aksu as a chosen stay, not merely an overnight label between long drives. Discuss the exact museum, town visit or landscape interest with the planner, including the approach and walking. A regional attraction name can cover a large area and may not be close to the room you are comparing.

For a quieter journey, retain a flexible city and rest day after moving from Kuqa. If you choose a more distant landscape outing, give it a separate local day and check the particular road, visitor access and seasonal conditions. Do not assume a rural track or mountain viewpoint is an open tourist road.

Ask the property about parking, room layout, heating or cooling and the route from the car to reception. A central hotel may suit evenings on foot, while a more distant property can add repeated driving. Choose around the local day rather than a generic “Aksu area” room description.

Hotan: add time for history and the actual craft visit

If Hotan is important, give it time beyond the connection day. A museum visit, a selective town walk and a specifically arranged craft encounter are different activities. The first requires the museum’s dated visitor arrangements; the last requires the actual workshop or producer to accept visitors.

For Hotan Museum, ask about the current exhibition, foreign-passport entry, language support, closures and the correct entrance before planning around it. A third-party “scan your Chinese ID and enter” description does not answer the foreign-document case. Keep a town-based alternative if the visit cannot be arranged.

For textiles, carpets or other craft interests, request the named site, what the visitor may see, whether a demonstration is included and any purchasing expectation. A working production space is not automatically a public attraction. A staged tourism performance and an operating workshop should be described honestly in the proposal.

If considering jade or another valuable purchase, compare the actual item and seller terms independently from the tour. Ask for the material description, documentation, final price and return conditions in a language you understand. Do not treat a shop visit, an entertaining demonstration or a guide’s introduction as proof of quality or investment value.

Make every intercity connection a real travel block

Choose transport after checking the dated service and complete door-to-door journey. Railway stations, airports and hotel locations need exact Chinese names. A short flight duration or the existence of a railway line says little about a practical departure, transfer or arrival on your date.

Part Write down Avoid assuming
Train Date, exact Chinese stations, ticket identity details, luggage and hotel transfers. Every regional station or city name refers to the same boarding point.
Flight The actual dated service, airport, bags, connection and final hotel arrival. A short airborne duration gives a full sightseeing day.
Road Actual accepted roads, car/driver, breaks, arrival and a usable earlier stop. A map line is a tested comfortable day for the party.
Overnight transport Berth/seat arrangements, bags, station pickup and the next room. A transport night counts as both a hotel night and a full day of rest.
Next booked visit The time left after the full arrival and any delay. An essential cave or museum appointment fits immediately after a long sector.

For the Aksu–Hotan section, compare the actual road routing with the dated railway or flight options that can be booked. Do not assume the line connecting the two cities on a route illustration is a short sightseeing transfer. Keep a full travel block and add an intermediate night when the chosen mode and party’s pace require it.

If using an overnight train, rewrite the hotel-night count and arrange luggage, the actual station pickup and the next room’s access. A night on transport is not a hotel night or a full rest day. Avoid an essential museum appointment or a fixed flight immediately after an uncertain long connection.

Duku closure: keep the southern trip independent

The Xinjiang transport authority’s 10 October 2026 report records the winter closure of G217’s Duku Highway from 8 October. The closure prohibits ordinary public vehicles. A construction or maintenance exception does not create a tourist-driving exemption.

For a future summer trip, wait for the actual reopening and current operating rules before adding the mountain crossing. Do not infer the 2027 date from the previous season. If a Kuqa-area attraction has an approach affected by the closed road, ask the responsible authorities and operator about that exact access; do not generalise the closure into either “all Kuqa is closed” or “every nearby attraction is reachable.”

Keep a south-focused itinerary with accepted roads and local cultural visits, or postpone the mountain-road portion. A road closure is a reason to change the plan, not to look for an unofficial track. The Urumqi planning guide covers another urban stay if you are redesigning the wider journey.

Foreign passports, interpretation and daily comfort

Send the actual nationality and passport type to the responsible booking parties through the agreed secure process. Ask each selected attraction how names, numbers and original documents are handled. A successful payment does not establish that a reservation contains the correct identity details.

Confirm each hotel’s actual booking and registration arrangements, the room and required original document. Discuss family bed layouts, steps, bathrooms, late arrivals and luggage with the property. An attractive room photograph does not settle those practical conditions.

Choose interpretation deliberately. An English-speaking city guide, a cave institution’s scheduled explanation and a driver’s language ability are separate services. Ask who handles the transitions and what can be explained at a protected site under its own rules. Allow time to understand one place rather than collecting several brief stops.

For halal meals, allergies or prayer needs, plan the actual restaurants and road breaks. Do not infer preparation from a dish name or the region alone. Respect residents and staff, ask before close portrait photography and follow any restrictions at cultural or religious locations.

What changes Useful alternative Keep clear
Kizil visit or passport process cannot be arranged A confirmed city exhibition or another accepted local visit. The exact institution and language; no unassigned cave entry.
A mountain road is closed A southern cultural route on accepted roads, or postpone that road portion. A construction exception is not ordinary tourist access.
The Hotan connection consumes too much time Retain Kuqa and Aksu or remove another region. Local days and proper rest matter more than completing three names.
A workshop cannot receive visitors A confirmed public cultural venue or a different town outing. A production site and a staged visitor demonstration are different.
The group needs a quieter day Keep one suitable visit, meals and time near the chosen base. Do not recover time by adding late driving or removing breaks.

Send a brief that gives each base a purpose

Send dates, arrival and departure cities, nationality, number and ages of travellers, interests, comfortable road-day length, walking needs, luggage and food or prayer requirements through Vero Trip’s planning enquiry. Say which two or three bases matter most and whether cave art, history, craft visits or landscapes is the main reason for travelling.

Request a proposal with actual city nights, dated connections, named visits, passport arrangements, guide language and alternatives. Compare the Kashgar city stay and the published Southern Xinjiang itinerary by their real geography; they do not automatically include Kuqa, Aksu and Hotan or confirm every service described here.
