For Mission Hills China golf, make the location your first decision. Shenzhen and Dongguan are in Guangdong; Haikou is on Hainan Island. Choose the Guangdong locations if golf is part of a Shenzhen-area visit or you want particular courses there. Choose Haikou for a separate Hainan stay built around volcanic landscapes and resort time. “Mission Hills” alone is not enough information to book a hotel, driver or round.
The second decision is the named layout. World Cup is at Shenzhen, Norman and Olazabal are at Dongguan, and Blackstone and Lava Fields are at Haikou. Ask for the course, correct clubhouse, date and tee time together. A hotel confirmation or a general golf voucher does not establish that your preferred course is included.
Shenzhen, Dongguan and Haikou compared
Use this comparison to choose a base, then check the exact venue through the operator’s Mission Hills contact directory. The brand has separate resorts, clubhouses and academies; make sure your conversation reaches the relevant location.
| Location | Named courses to discuss | Best starting question |
|---|---|---|
| Shenzhen, Guangdong | World Cup; other Shenzhen layouts according to your preferences and access | Does this hotel and pickup connect to the actual Shenzhen clubhouse for my round? |
| Dongguan, Guangdong | Norman or Olazabal, with different demands | If staying in Shenzhen, what transfer gets us and our bags to Dongguan before check-in? |
| Haikou, Hainan Island | Blackstone, Lava Fields or another named Haikou layout | Which courses are included in the dated package, and which require a separate arrangement? |
Shenzhen and Dongguan can be part of the same golf stay, but changing clubhouses still requires planning. Haikou belongs to a different travel leg. Do not book a Haikou round while assuming it is reachable on the inter-clubhouse shuttle used within the Guangdong operation.

Choose a course by the shots and day you want
A championship reputation is useful background, but the most enjoyable holiday round depends on tee choice, confidence, walking needs and current conditions. Give the booking contact your normal playing distance or usual tees, along with your handicap if you have one.
| Course and location | Character in the operator’s description | Question to ask for your party |
|---|---|---|
| World Cup, Shenzhen | Jack Nicklaus design with water and substantial bunkering | Which tees match our comfortable carry and the pace we expect? |
| Norman, Dongguan | Narrow fairways, native grass and varied terrain | Is this the right challenge for players who struggle to keep drives in play? |
| Olazabal, Dongguan | Strong bunkering and undulating fairways | Would a less demanding layout suit some members of the group better? |
| Blackstone, Haikou | Lava rock, trees, water and forced carries | Which tees and current playing arrangements fit the least confident golfer? |
| Lava Fields, Haikou | A more open setting with sand, exposed rock and broad fairways | How does it compare with Blackstone for our preferred style of round? |
The course pages for World Cup, Norman, Olazabal, Blackstone and Lava Fields explain the designs. Use them to discuss a shortlist, then ask about access and conditions for the actual dates.
Different players can reasonably disagree about difficulty. A forward-tee round can feel approachable to one golfer while long grass or difficult recovery shots overwhelm another. Avoid choosing entirely from a back-tee yardage, a social-media score or a claim that a course is the hardest in Asia. Ask what your own players will encounter.
If someone needs an easier physical day, distinguish walking from shot difficulty. The operator explicitly describes Haikou’s Stepping Stone as walking-only. A short par-three layout may therefore be unsuitable for someone relying on a cart. Confirm alternatives before paying rather than trying to solve the issue at the first tee.
Hotel booking, golf access and vouchers are separate checks
Ask whether your party may book the requested course under the proposed offer, and what information or qualifying conditions apply. A member’s price, a tournament programme or an old hotel promotion may not apply to a visiting non-member. Avoid treating a screenshot without its full terms and validity dates as a quote.
Start by sending the number of players, desired dates, preferred courses and hotel requirements. State whether a particular course is essential or whether the club may propose alternatives. Once an option is available, request a confirmation that identifies each round separately; “two rounds at Mission Hills” leaves too much unresolved.
Read any voucher exclusions by course name. An offer may cover some layouts but exclude the one you most want, or distinguish weekdays from other dates. If a hotel package includes golf practice, ask whether that means range balls, a lesson, a short course or a full round. These activities should not be treated as interchangeable.
For foreign visitors, have the booking name match the travel document and ask which player details are required, how to send them securely, and which payment methods the booking channel accepts. Do not send passport scans to an unverified personal contact just because an attractive rate appears in a post. Use the operator’s published contact route or an identified organiser handling your booking.
Find the correct clubhouse before arranging the pickup
The official Getting Here page describes inter-clubhouse connections for the Shenzhen and Dongguan locations. Treat it as the route reference, then confirm current operating hours, stops, seat availability and golf-bag arrangements for your date. A scheduled shuttle is useful only if it gets your party to the right check-in point with enough time to prepare.
Send the driver the confirmed clubhouse name and a location pin, not just the hotel name or the words “Mission Hills golf.” Ask the golf desk where to report, where equipment is handed over and when to arrive before the tee time. Allow additional time if you need rentals, a change of clothes or help communicating.
If your journey starts in Hong Kong, plan the cross-border transfer as a distinct part of the day. Establish the chosen route, travel-document requirements and baggage handling with the relevant providers before tying it to a tight tee time. A short-looking distance on a map does not account for the whole journey.
For Haikou, confirm whether pickup is from the airport, a railway station or a city hotel. Hainan has multiple stations and hotel areas; provide the actual arrival service and full property name. If combining the island with Guangdong, keep the travel day separate from a must-play round whenever possible.

Count hard golf cases as well as ordinary suitcases when booking a car. For a group, ask for the available luggage space after all passenger seats and child seats are in use. A stated passenger capacity is not a promise that the same vehicle can carry every player’s equipment.
Build a short stay around two good playing days
These examples give a starting rhythm rather than a fixed package or confirmed course sequence. Place the essential round on a full day and keep enough flexibility for weather, maintenance or a travel delay.
| Trip | Suggested arrangement | What to keep flexible |
|---|---|---|
| Three nights, Guangdong | Arrive; one Shenzhen or Dongguan round; a second named course; depart | The first evening and departure morning, plus any inter-clubhouse transfer |
| Four nights, Guangdong with a companion | Two rounds separated by a shared leisure day | Activities that depend on finishing golf at a precise time |
| Three or four nights, Haikou | Two chosen layouts with resort time around them | A second course preference if the essential layout is unavailable |
| A longer Guangdong and Hainan journey | Separate stays with a dedicated travel day between | Flight and bag logistics; avoid a round that depends on an on-time connection |
For eight golfers, request the playing groups and adjacent slots rather than one vague group reservation. Ask whether the order can be kept together, how carts and caddies are assigned and where everyone meets after finishing. For a solo player or a pair, ask about pairing with other golfers and whether a preferred arrangement is available.
Be clear about personal preferences, such as a non-smoking playing environment or assistance in English. Explain them before the round and ask what the venue can arrange. A preference does not guarantee exclusive use of a group, a cart or a particular member of staff.
Check maintenance and the complete cost before payment
Ask about scheduled greens aeration, sanding, temporary changes and any other work affecting your dates. A course can be open while playing differently from the photographs that persuaded you to visit. A dated answer lets you accept the condition, change the layout or reconsider the timing.
| Booking component | Require a clear answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Access and rounds | Course name, date, tee time, holes and player eligibility | A resort name or voucher title does not identify the actual round |
| Round charges | Green fee, caddie, cart, sharing policy, rentals and separately payable items | Two headline prices may cover different services |
| Stay and transfers | Room, nights, meals, pickup points, bags and return transport | The golf booking and the hotel offer may have different inclusions |
| Change conditions | Cancellation, weather suspension, unfinished rounds and course substitutions | A forecast or delay does not itself establish the refund you will receive |
For rental clubs, specify handedness, preferred shaft characteristics and the number of sets. Ask about the fallback if the exact set is unavailable. For your own clubs, check the operating airline’s policy using the packed bag’s weight and size, then arrange storage between hotel checkout and any later activity.
Plan a flexible return after golf. The playing time can change with conditions and the groups ahead; collecting bags, returning rentals and showering adds more time. A driver contact who knows how to adjust the pickup is more useful than an optimistic finish time copied from another traveller’s round.
Beginners, children and non-playing companions
For a beginner, request the relevant academy or a lesson explicitly, including duration, language, equipment and age conditions. A full round should suit the player’s ability and the club’s participation requirements. For a child, ask who must supervise and whether the proposed activity actually accepts that age group.
For a non-playing partner, compare the hotel’s usable facilities and nearby activities with the hours you expect to be away. Confirm access and booking requirements for any specific activity. Avoid assuming that the word “resort” settles childcare, pool access, transport or everything a companion needs for the day.
Arrange meals around the tee time, including breakfast before an early pickup and a practical meal afterwards. Muslim travellers should state the food preparation they require and ask about suitable options individually; a clubhouse menu should not be assumed halal. Agree a prayer break and a suitable private space with the hotel or venue where possible, without presuming a dedicated prayer room.
Choose the wider trip, then request the exact rounds
If you are still comparing regions, use our China golf planning guide. If the main decision is between Haikou and Hainan’s coastal bases, see the Haikou, Wanning and Sanya comparison. For a Haikou itinerary starting point, compare the Blackstone golf tour and Lava Fields golf tour against your actual travel dates.
Send VeroTrip the preferred Mission Hills location, dates, essential courses, golfer and companion numbers, usual tees or playing level, hotel preferences, golf bags and any language, mobility, meal or prayer requirements through Plan My Trip. Name one acceptable alternative if you have flexibility. The next useful step is a dated arrangement with clear course names and conditions, so the hotel and journey can be built around the rounds available to your party.
