Give the heritage railway a full day, with the correct boarding point, Bagou town time, two Leshan nights and a complete return plan.

Updated 5 November 2026

Give the Jiayang steam railway its own sightseeing day, preferably between two nights in Leshan. Choose the actual boarding station, the booked train journey and the time in Bagou before arranging the road transfers. A ride, a town walk and a meal make a coherent day; a mine visit or lake cruise is an additional choice.

Jiayang is in Qianwei County in the wider Leshan area, rather than beside the Giant Buddha. It suits travellers interested in industrial history, slower rail travel and an old mining settlement. It is a sightseeing railway visit, not a high-speed connection between the cities on your China itinerary.

What makes Jiayang different?

The railway grew out of coal transport between the mining valley and Shixi. The scenic operator’s history records its opening in 1959, later development as a visitor attraction and visits by overseas railway enthusiasts. This is a preserved industrial landscape with a working steam-railway tradition, rather than a theme-park replica of a modern train.

That history helps explain the appeal: the engine, the railway’s relationship with the hills and the settlement that grew around the mine belong to the same story. Watch from the places opened to visitors and allow time for Bagou after the ride. A longer list of paid activities is not necessary to make the day worthwhile.

A historical account of overseas visitors is not a ticket reservation for your date. Foreign-passport travellers should have the chosen service confirm the document category and collection or inspection procedure before payment. Bring the original passport used in the accepted booking. Never enter invented Chinese identity-card details to get through an unsuitable form.

Choose the station and the journey together

Use the Chinese place names when agreeing the pickup: Yuejin Station, 跃进站, and Bagou, 芭沟, also called Bajiaogou or 芭蕉沟 in historical material. A quotation that only says “Jiayang train” leaves the road driver and passenger with too much to guess. Ask for a map pin for both the boarding point and the collection point after the visit.

The operator’s October social-media notice announces updated train information, so older internet timetables are a poor basis for buying connecting tickets. Select the current departure offered for your date, its direction, terminal and return arrangement. A short service from a different station must not be treated as the same journey merely because both use a steam engine.

Choice What it gives you What the booking must identify
A booked train journey with Bagou time The ride followed by a separate look around the former mining town. Starting station, finishing station, town free time and onward collection.
A shorter ride offered for your date A smaller railway commitment when the approach and schedule genuinely save time. Exactly which section is ridden and which viewing stops are absent.
A railway-focused longer stay More space for heritage interests and changes in the operating programme. Accommodation location, accepted sessions and transport between them.

Distinguish a one-way ticket from a return ticket, and both from a package with other attractions. If you finish in Bagou, the next movement must be explicit: a booked return train or an agreed road collection from the actual accessible meeting point. Do not discover at the end that the vehicle is waiting back at the first station.

Book the train around the day you can actually manage. Leave room for getting from the drop-off to the correct ticket point, document inspection, toilets and boarding. An advertised ride duration describes only part of the outing; it does not cover the approach from Leshan, a meal, the town or your complete return.

Choose a few places along the railway

The operator’s English heritage presentation introduces Mifengyan’s railway manoeuvres, the curved track through fields at Caiziba, Liangshuituo’s viewing setting and the former mining settlement of Bajiaogou. Use those names to ask what your chosen service actually visits. They are not a promise that every train stops everywhere.

Mifengyan (蜜蜂岩) interests visitors who want to understand railway operation. If your service includes an opportunity to observe, follow staff directions and stay out of the working track area. A photograph is not a reason to step beyond the managed viewing position.

Caiziba (菜子坝) is the field-and-curve setting to discuss for landscape photographs. Flowers are seasonal, not an inclusion in a train ticket. Choose the railway because you want the railway, with the crop and colour treated as a possible bonus.

Liangshuituo (亮水沱) is associated with the managed steam-viewing experience in the heritage presentation. Ask whether it forms part of the selected service. Weather, light and the operating programme determine what happens; a rainbow or a particular plume cannot be guaranteed.

Bagou / Bajiaogou gives the ride a human setting. Walk a manageable section of the former mining town, pause for a meal and look at the streets and buildings from public visitor areas. Leave operational or residential spaces alone. A short guided explanation can be more rewarding than hurrying between every old building.

Three days and two nights with a Leshan base

For a first visit, a Leshan hotel for both nights keeps the baggage plan simple. The railway day is the one full local day. This is a suggested framework to adapt to the accepted train programme, not a statement that a particular transfer or hotel has been reserved.

Day Main plan Overnight and boundary
Day 1 Reach Leshan, check in, have a local meal and keep the evening gentle. Leshan, night 1. Arrival and onward hotel transfer are separate arrangements.
Day 2 Travel to the agreed railway station; take the booked service, visit Bagou as arranged and return. Same Leshan hotel, night 2. Protect lunch and the complete collection journey.
Day 3 Breakfast, collect stored luggage and leave for the next base. No further hotel night assumed. Use an actually workable onward connection.

Keep the first evening close to the hotel rather than adding a major attraction after a long arrival. On the railway day, use one confirmed train programme as the anchor. Fit the town and meal around its actual timings, and leave a margin before any fixed return departure.

To visit the Giant Buddha as well, add a third Leshan night: use a separate full day for the selected land or river visit and depart the following day. The Leshan Giant Buddha day outline explains those two formats. That existing outline starts and ends in Chengdu and does not include Jiayang; a Leshan-based version and the extra railway day require a different written arrangement.

A same-day return from Chengdu may be possible with an early, accepted programme and suitable road arrangements, but it uses more of the day for travel. Compare the complete door-to-door plan before choosing it over Leshan nights. Do not add the Giant Buddha, Mount Emei and Jiayang to one day to avoid a hotel change. The Leshan and Mount Emei planner helps separate those larger visits.

Keep the mine and lake as separate choices

The operator’s description of the wider scenic area distinguishes the railway and mining-town area from Suoluo Lake’s wetland landscape. A lake cruise is not part of the rail journey by definition, and an underground experience is not the same physical undertaking as walking through Bagou.

This introductory plan stays above ground. A mine visit requires its own current admission, suitability and operating information before it is selected. If a member of the party does not want it, agree a genuinely workable above-ground alternative and meeting arrangement. Do not leave someone waiting alone at an unspecified exit.

Choose a lake extension only when its transport, sailing and finish fit without squeezing the railway day. If industrial heritage is the main interest, protect more town time instead. If countryside scenery matters more, compare the two options before reserving the train, rather than assuming everything can be purchased on arrival and fitted in.

Comfort, luggage and a different-weather plan

Steam railway visits can involve loud whistles, moving machinery, boarding steps, waiting and time in the open air. Tell the booking service about difficulty climbing into a carriage, hearing sensitivity or a need for frequent seated rests. Ask about the actual carriage and boarding assistance; the presence of a train does not establish step-free access.

For children, explain the whistle and keep them beside an adult at stations and viewing stops. Choose a programme with a proper lunch break and time for toilets. Hats, practical shoes, water and a light rain layer are useful. Follow carriage instructions about windows, belongings and where passengers may stand.

Leave large bags at the hotel only after storage is accepted. Take a small day bag with documents, water, essentials and rain protection. If travelling onward rather than returning to the same hotel, confirm luggage space and where it remains during the ride; no vehicle or station storage is included merely because it appears convenient on a map.

Rain may make outdoor waiting and town walking less pleasant, while a railway suspension can remove the purpose of the outing. Agree the change and cancellation terms before reserving a dedicated vehicle. A shorter town visit or a different Leshan day can be discussed, but should not be substituted automatically for the train you wanted.

What to put in the written price

Ask for the correct train ticket, any guided explanation and language, road vehicle hours, collection points, luggage capacity, parking and road costs to be itemised. Identify the meal arrangements and the cost of any mine, lake, local shuttle or extra activity. Hotels and personal insurance are separate unless explicitly included.

For a customised Vero Trip proposal, use Plan My Trip to send your dates, group size, children’s ages, Leshan or Chengdu hotel, onward transport and whether the priority is the ride, town history or photographs. Add any boarding or walking limits. Price on request; no English guide, specific carriage, train departure or transfer is confirmed by this guide.

Questions about visiting Jiayang

Is Jiayang the same as the high-speed railway to Leshan?

No. The heritage railway is a separate sightseeing visit in Qianwei County. Plan the journey to its actual boarding station in addition to your intercity train. The China rail boarding guide covers the separate national-rail journey.

Which station should I put in the transfer request?

Use the station shown on the accepted Jiayang ticket, with its Chinese name and map pin. Yuejin and Bagou are different meeting points. The collection after your final activity needs its own location, especially for a one-way rail journey.

Can I visit without entering a mine?

Yes, build the request around the operating train service and the open above-ground town areas. This suggested plan does not include an underground visit. Check the selected ticket and any bundled charges before paying.

Should I combine it with the Giant Buddha on the same day?

Separate them when both visits matter. Use the railway day for its transfers, booked ride, town and meal. Add a Leshan night and a dedicated Buddha day rather than making both experiences depend on an unusually quick road journey or short queue.
