Plan a 13-day Hunan, Guizhou and Guangxi road trip from Changsha to Guilin, with 12 nights, mountain bookings, village stays and family logistics.

A Hunan Guizhou Guangxi road trip works best as a one-way journey: Changsha, Zhangjiajie, Fenghuang, eastern Guizhou’s villages, Longji and Yangshuo, finishing through Guilin. Allow 13 days and 12 nights for this active version. The reward is variety; the trade-off is regular packing and several days built around road travel. For a gentler family holiday, add nights before adding more sights.

This is a planning guide for travel by car with a driver. Motorcycle rental, riding arrangements and a fixed package price are outside this itinerary. Specific vehicles, hotels, tickets and services belong in your dated travel proposal.

Is this the right three-province journey?

Choose this route when you want Hunan’s sandstone mountains and riverside towns, Miao and Dong cultural landscapes in Guizhou, and Guangxi’s terraces and limestone countryside. It has more changes of setting than a single-region holiday. It also gives you less time in each village than a dedicated Guizhou trip.

Your priority Choose this shape What changes
Mountains, villages and countryside in one journey 13 days, Changsha to Guilin Accept eight overnight bases and several transfer-focused days.
Older relatives, young children or longer village stays 15–16 days on the same route Add nights around Kaili, Zhaoxing or Longji instead of adding attractions.
Fewer hotel changes in a shorter holiday Choose Hunan or Guizhou–Guangxi Keep the area you most want; avoid squeezing the full corridor into a week.

Changsha is the arrival city, not a full city break in this schedule. Add a night there if a museum visit or food-focused day matters. At the other end, Guilin is the departure connection; two nights are spent in Yangshuo. Do not buy an early final-day departure until the transfer from your chosen Yangshuo hotel has been planned.

The 13-day route and all 12 overnight stays

The sequence below travels from Hunan into Guizhou, then south into Guangxi. Tongren is a possible stop on day 6; Jiangkou is the two-night base for Fanjing Shan. At Longji, select one village rather than treating the whole terrace area as a single hotel location.

Thirteen-day Changsha to Guilin route via Wulingyuan, Fenghuang, eastern Guizhou, Longji and Yangshuo, with twelve nights at eight bases
Thirteen days, twelve nights and eight overnight bases. Optional Tongren and Langde stops add no nights. Approximate place links, not driving-road directions. Select the map to enlarge.
Day and journey Main use of the day Sleep
1 · Arrive in Changsha Settle in; a short neighbourhood walk if arrival allows. Changsha
2 · Changsha → Wulingyuan Transfer-focused day; check the following morning’s forest-park gate. Wulingyuan
3 · Zhangjiajie National Forest Park One coherent mountain-viewpoint circuit, with booked transport directions. Wulingyuan
4 · Forest park / flexible walking day A shorter Golden Whip Stream outing or another park sector. Wulingyuan
5 · Wulingyuan → Fenghuang Road transfer, hotel check-in and an evening old-town walk. Fenghuang
6 · Fenghuang → Tongren → Jiangkou An optional Tongren city stop; finish near Fanjing Shan’s east approach. Jiangkou
7 · Fanjing Shan or a lower-level alternative Use the booked entry and the open visitor route; return to the same hotel. Jiangkou
8 · Jiangkou → Kaili Protect the day for driving, breaks and a straightforward check-in. Kaili
9 · Kaili → Langde → Zhaoxing One short Miao-village visit if departure and access allow; continue south. Zhaoxing
10 · Zhaoxing → Longji Village morning, then transfer to one selected terrace village. Longji
11 · Longji → Yangshuo A manageable terrace walk before the onward journey. Yangshuo
12 · Yangshuo countryside Choose one main river, village or tea experience; keep the afternoon flexible. Yangshuo
13 · Yangshuo → Guilin departure Transfer to the exact booked airport or railway station. No overnight included

Night count: Changsha 1 + Wulingyuan 3 + Fenghuang 1 + Jiangkou 2 + Kaili 1 + Zhaoxing 1 + Longji 1 + Yangshuo 2 = 12 nights. Day 13 is departure. An extra night for an early Guilin flight changes the trip length or must replace another overnight; it cannot be added invisibly.

The road calendar matters more than a neat mileage total. Keep days 2 and 8 free of prepaid sightseeing appointments. On days 5, 6, 9, 10 and 11, arrange the drive first and fit only the stated short visit around it. Ask for door-to-door estimates using your actual hotels, with meal stops, toilets, traffic and village access included. These are scheduling allowances, not measured driving times.

Days 1–5: give Zhangjiajie enough time, then move to Fenghuang

After arriving in Changsha, recover from your journey and keep the evening near the hotel. Travel to Wulingyuan on day 2. A hotel convenient for the entrance you will use is more useful than an address simply advertised as “Zhangjiajie”: the city and the forest-park area are different bases.

Use day 3 for a connected mountain circuit such as Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain, adjusted to the available transport. The forest park’s visitor notice requires entry reservations by gate and time, including repeat entry, and distinguishes upward and downward cable-car or elevator tickets. It also lists passports among accepted identity documents. Keep the original passport with you and match the name and document number on each booking.

Make day 4 deliberately lighter. A short out-and-back section of Golden Whip Stream gives a clear turnaround decision; walking through to a different endpoint requires the correct onward transport. Agree the exit and pickup point beforehand. Do not count on a vehicle appearing halfway along the walking trail. Our Golden Whip Stream and Tianmen walking guide helps compare the effort and connections.

Tianmen Mountain is a separate outing. If it is essential, replace day 4 and arrange its city-side transport, or add a night; avoid combining it with a full stream walk. Following the operator’s October cableway announcement, only the two-way C route operates from 13 October 2026 while the main Tianmen cableway is stopped. Use the current ticket instructions for your date rather than an older A/B-route diagram.

On day 5, move to Fenghuang and leave the old-town walk until after check-in. Ask the hotel for its vehicle drop-off and walking approach, especially with large cases. A quiet room away from evening activity may matter more than the closest river view. Keep steps and slippery paving in mind when choosing the evening route.

Three nights in Wulingyuan leave two separate days for the forest park.

Days 6–9: Fanjing Shan, a transfer day and one Miao village

Day 6 links Fenghuang with the Tongren area and Jiangkou. Keep a Tongren stop optional so it does not jeopardise a comfortable arrival. Two nights in Jiangkou allow the mountain day without immediately packing again, but they do not guarantee an extra ticket or a weather-free visit.

Fanjing Shan’s eastern approach is in Jiangkou and its western approach is in Yinjiang. They are not interchangeable hotel or ticket destinations. The tourism area’s capacity notice shows why booking the correct gate and entry slot matters: both sides can reach their limit. Its August sold-out date is an example of capacity management, not a statement about today’s availability. Check your actual date with the current Fanjing Shan operator, including how your passport booking is presented at entry.

Tell the planner your stair tolerance before choosing the mountain route. A cable-car journey does not make every summit path suitable for someone who struggles with steps. The day can end at a comfortable open viewing area without pursuing every high point. If the mountain is closed or unsuitable, use a confirmed lower-level visit around Jiangkou or Tongren, or rest. Heavy rain can also affect lower roads and riverside places.

Day 8 is the move to Kaili. Treat it as a road day with breaks, laundry and an uncomplicated evening meal. On day 9, one Miao-village stop is enough before continuing to Zhaoxing. Langde is the proposed choice; the Leishan county introduction places it in the Kaili–Leishan area. Finalise the access, visit length and onward drive together. If they make the day too long, add a Kaili night or omit the stop.

Ask before photographing people or entering homes and workshops. A welcome ceremony, craft session or performance requires its own arrangement; a village visit does not guarantee a festival. If offered rice wine, you can politely decline. Explain alcohol restrictions to the guide in advance so a welcome remains comfortable for everyone.

Days 10–13: Dong villages, one Longji base and Yangshuo

Spend the Zhaoxing morning around its lanes and drum towers before the onward journey. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s local route connects Zhaoxing with Tang’an and its terraces. That is a useful extension, not a requirement on this transfer day. Add a Zhaoxing night if you want Tang’an walking and a more substantial cultural visit.

At Longji, choose Ping’an or the Jinkeng/Dazhai area for the overnight and give the driver the hotel’s precise meeting point. The scenic operator’s visitor notice distinguishes the core viewing areas and different parking arrangements. Its National Day traffic controls were for that holiday; ask about the rules applying on your date. Confirm the final walking distance, stairs, luggage help and any hotel pickup before paying for a room.

Use day 11 for a short terrace walk that returns to your baggage handover point, then continue to Yangshuo. Pick an open path that suits the least mobile traveller. Fields change with farming activity and weather, so select the overnight for its setting and access rather than a promise of one exact colour.

Day 12 needs one main experience. On the Yulong River, choose a named route and agree where the driver meets you afterward. The river operator’s Longtan page, for example, distinguishes a one-way two-person route from a returning leisure raft. This is why “bamboo rafting” alone is not a complete booking. Passenger eligibility, weather, life jackets and the operating status must fit the actual service.

Alternatively, use the Qixianfeng tea-plantation guide to plan a separate picking, processing or tasting visit. Arrange the return journey as well as the outward ride; do not squeeze it between a raft departure and a long mountain walk. Keep day 13 for the transfer to the exact Guilin terminal shown on your departure booking.

Reservations and rain: decide what can change

Secure the major mountain days before making every hotel inflexible. A spare local day can absorb a change only when replacement tickets, roads and accommodation are actually available. Fog alone may hide a viewpoint; closures or dangerous weather require a different plan.

Booking or weather issue Keep this practical alternative Avoid this mistake
Forest-park entry or mountain transport unavailable Use a confirmed different park day or a gentle local day Assuming a hotel or driver reservation includes admission.
Fanjing Shan sold out, closed or unsuitable for your group A Jiangkou / Tongren visit that is open and safe that day Switching to a different mountain gate without a matching booking.
Heavy rain around terraces or villages Rest, a prearranged indoor craft visit, or an earlier hotel arrival Treating a riverbank, cave or flooded road as an automatic rainy-day option.
Yangshuo rafting suspended or passengers ineligible A safe countryside visit or a confirmed indoor tea session Assuming every raft route has the same rules or pickup point.

Choose refund and change terms you can live with. Keep the booking confirmation, cancellation deadline and responsible supplier together for each paid activity. A driver can help you reach the alternative, but cannot create park capacity or override a safety closure.

The vehicle, hotel and daily comfort checklist

Ask for one proposal covering the entire car journey and showing any driver or vehicle change between provinces. A local transfer on each booking page does not automatically form a continuous journey. For travellers considering driving themselves, first use our China rental-car guide to establish the licence and rental requirements.

Confirm in writing Why it matters on this route Information to supply
Vehicle, registered seating and luggage capacity A full passenger count does not establish suitcase space People, suitcase dimensions, stroller and any mobility equipment.
Driver, language and guiding scope Driving and explaining village history are different services English support needs and which days require a guide.
Interprovincial operation and one-way finish Changsha pickup and Guilin finish may change staffing and cost Exact first hotel, final terminal and travel dates.
Price inclusions and cancellation terms Tolls, parking, driver accommodation and local shuttles can be separate Required activities, preferred hotels and flexible items.
Hotel access and baggage handover An old-town or terrace address may not be a vehicle drop-off point Stair limits, room setup and porter or hotel shuttle needs.

Carry an overnight bag for the village stops, with medicines, chargers and tomorrow’s clothes easy to reach. Agree who holds the larger cases and where they remain secure; never assume a parked car is an included luggage store. Ask hotels about lifts, heating or cooling, bathroom layout and the route from reception to the room. Give each property your passport details through its agreed booking process and confirm check-in arrangements before arrival.

Children need appropriate restraints matched to their size and the actual vehicle, plus regular breaks. For older travellers, use short return walks, seated stops and an explicit decision to skip steep viewpoints when needed. If daily stairs or repeated packing are a major concern, add nights or shorten the route before booking.

Meals, dietary needs and prayer arrangements

Send allergies and dietary requirements before the hotel and village choices become fixed. Ask for mild cooking where preferred, but distinguish “not spicy” from a food allergy. Keep suitable snacks and drinking water accessible on transfer days; a scenic stop is not a guaranteed lunch venue.

For halal requirements, specify the standard you need. Fish or vegetables alone do not establish halal preparation: check stock, cooking fat, alcohol and shared utensils. Avoid treating a group village banquet as automatically suitable. Agree meals individually and leave time for an alternative if the kitchen cannot meet the requirement. Plan prayer around a suitable private room or another agreed space; the route does not promise a mosque at every stop.

Turn the route into a proposal for your dates

Send VeroTrip your dates, arrival and departure bookings, nationalities, group size, ages, walking limits and luggage. Add your must-see places, room preferences, meal and prayer needs, and which items you would replace if weather changes. Request a vehicle specification, the overnight list, door-to-door transfer estimates, ticket arrangements, cancellation terms and a clear inclusion list.

Our China road-trip collection provides other route ideas. For a shorter Guangxi focus, compare the existing three-day Guilin and Yangshuo private tour; its published scope does not include this three-province drive. Request a trip plan for the full corridor, with the services and price set out for your party before booking.
