Compare Erhai cruise styles, departure piers and return arrangements. Plan the whole Dali day without relying on old schedules or temporary ferry routes.

Choose an Erhai cruise by its departure pier, finishing pier and onward land journey. Those three details matter more than the boat photograph. A one-way sailing can be a useful part of a Dali day, while a return excursion may suit someone who wants a simpler outing from one base. Confirm the actual product for your date before arranging either.

There is a useful newer option to investigate: Dali Tourism Group announced a boat-and-around-Erhai-bus combination in April 2026. It addresses the question many visitors leave too late—how to continue after the boat docks. It does not mean that every boat ticket includes a bus or that a bus will take you to any lakeside hotel.

Pick the experience before the vessel

Decide whether you mainly want time on the water, a shorter cruise alongside a land visit, or a one-way journey towards your next stop. Each can work, but each needs a different plan. A sightseeing product should not be treated as a frequent ferry simply because it travels between two shores.

Read the route as a journey rather than a list of attractions. Check which places you pass, which involve landing, how long you can remain ashore and whether you continue on the same vessel. Seeing an island from the deck and visiting it on foot are different experiences.

For a relaxed day, choose a manageable sailing and one main land visit. If villages, cafés, workshops or the ecological corridor are your real priorities, more time ashore may serve you better than a longer cruise. A view from the lake complements those visits; it does not replace them.

Know which pier is on your ticket

Dali’s modern city, old town and lakeside villages create different starting points. Use your hotel’s actual address when comparing access. Save the pier’s Chinese name and its boarding location on a current map, then check whether ticket collection happens at the same place.

Name to recognise What the operator material establishes What you still need to check
Dali Port, 大理港码头 The operator identifies it with Xiaguan, the modern city area; it also appears in the 2026 boat-and-bus announcement. Exact boarding point, check-in location and access from your hotel.
Longkan, 龙龛码头 This name appears in older operator route comparisons. Whether your chosen current product actually departs from or returns here.
Taoyuan, 桃源码头 The operator places this pier in the Xizhou area. Whether it is your final stop, an intermediate stop or unrelated to your booking.
Shuanglang, 双廊码头 The 2026 combined-product announcement names the pier in Shuanglang Ancient Town. The onward bus stop or vehicle meeting point after disembarkation.

These names help you interpret a booking; they do not form one universal route. Do not substitute a pier that looks closer on the map. If two websites give different departure points, settle the discrepancy with the actual operator or seller before paying, rather than merging their descriptions into one itinerary.

For a one-way cruise, put a second map pin at the finishing pier. Check how everyone and their luggage will get from there to the hotel or next visit. The return journey deserves the same attention as reaching the boat in the morning.

What the 2026 boat-and-bus announcement changes

On 25 April 2026, Dali Tourism Group described a combined product introduced by its Erhai cruise company and Chengguo tourism. The announcement says the around-Erhai bus serves both Dali Port and Shuanglang pier, linking a one-way boat journey with the land network.

This is a useful product to compare when you want to avoid arranging a separate road transfer after sailing. Ask which boat route and bus entitlement are sold together on your date, where you board the bus, and whether the intended connection is practical after disembarkation.

Check validity and use rules explicitly: the permitted travel day, any reservation or seat requirement, the direction of travel and the final usable departure. A promotional phrase such as “one ticket” does not by itself establish unlimited rides, a guaranteed immediate connection, hotel pickup or a refund for a missed bus.

If you already hold a bus pass, compare its terms with the proposed combination before buying another product. Keep the boat and bus booking details available offline. Our Erhai sightseeing-bus guide explains the land journey and stop choices in more detail.

Compare the whole outing, not just sailing time

A cruise starts before boarding and ends after you have reached your next stop. Include hotel access, ticket collection, check-in, any island stop, disembarkation and the land connection when judging whether it fits your day. The time printed for the sailing is only one part of that sequence.

Plan Good reason to choose it Keep the rest of the day realistic
Return cruise plus a local walk You want a straightforward lake outing from one boarding area. Confirm that it returns to the same pier and leaves time for your chosen walk.
One-way cruise plus land return The endpoint fits a place you want to visit. Check the bus combination or arrange the road transfer before sailing.
Longer cruise as the main activity Time on the water is the purpose of the day. Avoid adding a complete lake circuit and several distant villages afterward.
Land-based lake day You mainly want village streets, food or a shorter lakeside stroll. Choose a compact area and leave a boat trip for another suitable day.

If you have a fixed train or flight afterward, work backward from the terminal arrangements and the road transfer. Do not rely on the advertised docking time as your arrival time at the station. With an important departure, a separate cruise day gives more room for adjustments.

Why old route descriptions can mislead

The local tourism distribution company’s comparison of longer and ecological cruises is dated 15 March 2017. It demonstrates that products have used different routes and endpoints, but its departure times and durations are not a current timetable. A page being available today does not make every operating detail on it current.

There is an equally clear example with the water bus. A February 2025 notice described temporary services between Xiaguan and Jinsuo Island, and between Taoyuan and Shuanglang. Its stated trial ran from 29 January to 1 March 2025. That notice alone cannot establish a year-round service for your visit.

Use dated announcements to identify a product worth checking. Then obtain the actual route, availability and boarding instructions for your date. Apply the same approach to an evening cruise: an old launch story does not establish tonight’s departure or a suitable late return to your hotel.

Read the inclusions before comparing prices

Separate the sailing from land transfers, island entry, reserved seating, onboard food and optional activities. Ask whether an island mentioned in the description is simply passed, visited with admission included, or offered as a separately paid stop. The same applies to any bus connection.

Dali Tourism Group’s general cruise description discusses Bai three-course-tea song-and-dance presentations. Treat that as something to ask about on the selected sailing, rather than assuming every vessel has the same programme. Confirm its language, timing and inclusion if it is important to your choice. A group presentation is different from a private workshop or conversation.

Establish where you may sit with the ticket you are buying and which extras, if any, cost more. Compare the full payable amount for the same product, not unrelated headline prices from different years. Do not assume a student, senior or other attraction concession also applies to a boat service.

Passports, boarding and comfort

Before paying, confirm that the booking channel can accept the documents held by everyone travelling. Overseas visitors should ask how passport names and numbers are entered and what must be shown at check-in. An identity-card form is not a reason to enter invented details or use another person’s document.

Check whether an electronic confirmation is sufficient or whether a ticket must be collected, and obtain the required arrival time from the booking instructions. Save the order details and pier name offline. If a child needs a separate ticket or document, establish that before arriving at the queue.

For mobility needs, ask about the specific gangway, steps, onboard seating and toilets, and any landing included in the route. A comfortable lounge does not guarantee a step-free journey from the road to your seat. If disembarking at an island would be difficult, ask whether staying aboard is permitted; do not assume that option exists.

Bring sun protection and a layer for an exposed deck. Keep phones and hats secure, follow the crew’s instructions and use permitted seating and viewing areas. Do not promise yourself a particular mountain view or sunset: cloud, light and lake conditions shape what you see.

Luggage, bicycles and changed sailings

Confirm baggage terms before bringing a large suitcase. For a return outing, leaving luggage at an agreed hotel storage point may simplify the day; for a one-way journey, the plan must explain where the bags go. Keep valuables, documents and essentials with you.

A cycling plan needs its own handover. Ask whether the boat accepts the bicycle and whether the rental agreement permits a different return location. A passenger ticket does not establish bike carriage, and a one-way sailing does not return a rented bicycle to its shop.

Before travel, check operational notices and the cancellation or rescheduling terms for your exact product. If the sailing changes, confirm the effect on any bus connection and separately booked island visit or meal. A land-based alternative could be a shorter walk and an old-town visit, rather than attempting to recreate the entire boat route by road.

Fit a cruise into a wider Yunnan route

Our existing six-day Kunming, Dali and Lijiang route has an Erhai and Bai-culture stage on day three, following travel from Chuxiong. Its daily plan calls for choosing the cycling, village or boat section specified for the departure. Use it to discuss a cruise within the available afternoon; it does not establish every lake activity as included.

Ask for the exact sailing and land connections in the written proposal before adding another stop. More time at Erhai can require changing the balance of that day. For a stay based entirely in Dali, our Dali travel and hotel-area guide helps you choose a convenient base.

Frequently asked questions

Does an Erhai cruise go all the way around the lake?

Do not assume it does. Read the route and endpoints on the actual product. A cruise, the around-Erhai bus and a full road circuit describe different journeys.

Can I board at another pier if I arrive late?

Only if the operator confirms a change. A different pier may serve another route, and a later departure may have different conditions. Contact the seller through the booking channel rather than travelling to a second pier on speculation.

What should I send Vero Trip to plan the day?

Use Plan My Trip to send your date, hotel address, party size, children’s ages, walking needs, luggage and any fixed onward departure. State whether you prefer a return cruise or a one-way journey. Tickets, transfers, guiding language, meals and cancellation terms need to be identified in your written arrangement.
