Home / Guides / Shantou and Chaozhou Itinerary: 2–4 Days in Chaoshan

Choose a 2, 3 or 4 day Chaoshan itinerary with Chaozhou and Shantou, correct train stations, hotel bases, food planning and an optional Nan’ao Island day.

For a first Shantou itinerary that also includes Chaozhou, allow three days and two nights: start in Chaozhou, change hotels once, then finish in Shantou. Choose two days if you mainly want one city and its food; allow four days if Nan’ao Island matters to you. A late arrival or an early departure reduces the sightseeing time, so count usable days before booking hotels.

Chaoshan is a regional name, not a single town or railway station. Chaozhou offers an old-town and Han River focus; Shantou adds the Xiaogongyuan historic port district and a different city atmosphere. This plan keeps those two bases clear and treats Nan’ao as an optional coastal extension. You can reverse the order when your actual train or flight connections make that easier.

How many days do you need in Chaoshan?

Choose the trip length by what you want to enjoy slowly. Several restaurant queues, a bridge visit and an island drive can fill a day without leaving much time to experience any of them. For a first visit, keep one main sightseeing area and a few meal stops in each day.

Your time Best use of the trip What to leave out
2 days, 1 night Base in Chaozhou for heritage and food, or Shantou for the port district and meals. Nan’ao. Add the second city only with an early arrival, late departure and light luggage.
3 days, 2 nights One night in Chaozhou and one in Shantou; one hotel change links the two city visits. A separate island day, unless you replace most of the Shantou visit.
4 days, 3 nights Both cities plus either Nan’ao or a slower heritage day around Chaozhou. A long list of extra towns and islands. Keep the final connection protected.
Family or slower trip Use four days for the same two cities, with a midday rest and fewer restaurant targets. The assumption that an extra day must mean another destination.

Two nights in one hotel can suit travellers who dislike repacking, but it introduces a return journey on the second-city day. Compare that extra driving with one hotel change. For wheelchair users, older travellers and families with a stroller, check step-free room access and actual pavement conditions; a central address alone does not settle either question.

A practical three-day Chaozhou and Shantou itinerary

The following sequence assumes you arrive early enough to use the first afternoon and leave after sightseeing on day three. Reduce the first or last day if your tickets do not fit. The overnight stops are part of the plan: they save you from returning across the region after dinner.

Day and base What to do How to keep it comfortable
Day 1 — Chaozhou
Sleep in Chaozhou
Leave bags at the hotel, walk a short old-town circuit around Paifang Street and Kaiyuan Temple, and plan Guangji Bridge during its visitor hours. Use a seated meal break. Make any riverside evening visit optional rather than waiting hungry for a show.
Day 2 — Chaozhou to Shantou
Sleep in Shantou
Choose one remaining heritage stop or a relaxed breakfast; collect luggage and transfer. Check in before a short Shantou walk and dinner. Agree the pickup point before checkout. Avoid carrying suitcases through busy pedestrian lanes.
Day 3 — Shantou
Depart or add a night
Explore Xiaogongyuan’s arcades and surrounding streets, leave time for lunch, then collect bags and travel to your booked station or airport. Work backwards from the actual departure. Drop the last food stop if traffic or queues consume the buffer.

Chaozhou: put the bridge before the late afternoon food trail

Paifang Street, Kaiyuan Temple and the Han River are useful anchors for choosing your walking area. Plan Guangji Bridge separately: the visitor entry period, the floating section’s operation for river navigation, and any evening light programme are different arrangements. A time quoted for boats moving does not tell you when ticket admission ends.

Before setting out, check the dated visitor notice and the entry side on your ticket channel. Ask for the current last admission time, whether the floating section is connected, and the return route if only part of the bridge is accessible. Temporary river or construction arrangements can change the walk. If a crossing is unavailable, keep the old-town visit and view the river from an open public area; do not book the entire trip around a promised bridge spectacle.

For a fourth day focused on architecture, consider Longhu Ancient Village in Chaozhou instead of the island. It is a separate outing from the old-town walking circuit. Chaozhou’s account of Longhu describes its traditional buildings and village waterways. Arrange the return transport and respect private homes; an attractive doorway is not permission to enter. This is the setting shown in the featured photograph.

Shantou: give the port district a proper half-day

Xiaogongyuan is an area to walk, pause and explore, rather than a single attraction to photograph from the car. The municipal cultural authority’s description identifies its historic port character and arcade buildings. Start with a short circuit, choose one or two food stops, and leave room for a café or tea break. Galleries, exhibitions and performances may have their own opening or ticket arrangements.

If day two’s transfer finishes late, eat near your hotel and leave the old district for daylight on day three. An evening arrival does not need to trigger a second transfer just to complete a checklist. Keep a screenshot of the hotel name and entrance in Chinese for the return journey.

Get the right station and choose a hotel you can reach

Check the full arrival name before comparing ticket prices. Shantou Station and Chaoshan Station are distinct, as the city’s transport directory makes clear. Neither name is a substitute for your hotel address. A short rail segment between stations also excludes the road journeys at both ends.

Name on the booking What it means for this plan What to arrange
Chaoshan Station
潮汕站
A regional railway arrival; plan an onward transfer to the city where you will stay. Tell the driver or transport desk the exact Chaozhou or Shantou hotel, not simply “Chaoshan”.
Shantou Station
汕头站
A different railway station from Chaoshan Station; useful to compare for the Shantou end of your route. Check the booked train’s actual station, exit meeting point and hotel transfer.
Jieyang Chaoshan Airport
揭阳潮汕国际机场
An airport arrival requiring a road or other onward connection to your chosen base. Use the flight number and landing time; allow for baggage and a late-arrival meal.
Chaozhou or Shantou hotel The final destination of the arrival transfer; it may be inside a lane a vehicle cannot enter. Obtain the Chinese address, map pin, reachable drop-off and walking distance with bags.

For trains, compare the actual date and station pair on China Railway’s official booking information. Book with the traveller’s valid passport details and carry the same original document for travel. A booking screenshot helps you find the train but does not replace the travel document. Check available connections when sales open instead of relying on an old timetable or a social-media “three hours from everywhere” claim.

Traffic and buildings along an urban road in Shantou
Allow for the road transfer between your arrival station, hotel and sightseeing area in Shantou.

In Chaozhou, a hotel within comfortable walking reach of your chosen old-town stops saves repeated journeys, but ask about late-night noise, stairs and the car access point. A larger hotel outside the old lanes can be easier for luggage and rest; price in its extra transfers. In Shantou, compare an old-district base with a hotel convenient for your departure station. The best choice depends on which journey you want to shorten.

Before paying, send the property your party size, children’s ages and passport nationality. Confirm the exact room’s occupancy, beds, lift access, check-in arrangements and luggage storage. “Family room” does not automatically mean enough separate beds. On the city-change day, leave bags with the hotel only after agreeing collection arrangements. Do not depend on a station locker unless you have checked its current location, size, retrieval hours and payment method.

When to add Nan’ao Island—and when to skip it

Add Nan’ao for a coastal day when you have extra time and suitable weather. It is less compelling if your main interest is heritage and food, or if you have just spent several days on another coast. With three days, replacing Shantou sightseeing with the island is a real trade-off; squeezing both into a single departure day creates a fragile schedule.

For a four-day trip, one workable choice is to retain Shantou as your base for an island outing and return to the mainland before your departure day. An island overnight suits travellers who specifically want more coastal time, but adds another hotel change and makes the next day’s departure more dependent on the bridge. Agree the exact stops and return point rather than requesting an undefined “island circuit”.

Shantou’s Nan’ao Bridge operating notice allows traffic restrictions or closure in adverse weather and prohibits pedestrians, bicycles and motorcycles on the bridge. It also prohibits stopping there for photographs. Use a lawful road transfer and check the official account, 南澳大桥官微, for dated traffic notices. A separately operated ferry or boat trip needs its own operating check; an open road bridge does not establish that a boat service is running.

Keep the island day movable until conditions are clear. If access is restricted, use the time for a shorter Shantou city visit or another Chaozhou heritage stop appropriate to where you are staying. Do not turn a weather cancellation into an equally exposed coastal alternative.

Food, rest and practical alternatives

Make a small food list organised by the area you are already visiting. Choose a proper lunch or dinner first, then add snacks. A popular restaurant can absorb the time you set aside for a bridge visit, and several heavy meals are not compulsory for a successful food trip. Agree a queue limit with your companions and keep a nearby second choice.

Tell the restaurant about allergies and dietary requirements before ordering, including sauces, stock and shared preparation. For Muslim travellers, a beef restaurant or seafood menu does not establish halal suitability. Confirm the exact outlet’s meat sourcing, cooking ingredients and kitchen practices; if it cannot meet your requirements, use a suitable alternative agreed beforehand. Avoid building the day around an assumed mosque or prayer room: establish the actual location or arrange a suitable private space with your hotel. We do not list an unconfirmed local venue as an available prayer stop.

Travellers who prefer to avoid raw seafood can choose fully cooked dishes rather than follow social-media raw-marinated seafood challenges. Ask the staff to explain unfamiliar items and bring a translated dietary note. For long transfer days, suitable packaged food is useful when the intended restaurant is closed or the queue is too long.

If this happens Change the plan Do first
Rain, heat or tired children Shorten the walking circuit; add a seated meal or hotel rest. Check the actual indoor venue’s hours. Arcades help with shelter but do not make the whole route weatherproof.
Bridge access or an evening programme changes Keep the city visit and use an open riverside viewpoint; skip the timed spectacle. Read the latest visitor notice and identify the open entrance before paying or crossing town.
Restaurant queues are too long Use the second choice in the same area. Check dietary suitability again; popularity and a familiar dish name are not enough.
Island traffic threatens a train or flight Drop the island visit or return earlier; keep departure day on the mainland. Check the current road notice and your actual station or airport transfer.

Walking shoes matter more than a photogenic outfit on a day covering lanes, queues and station transfers. A shared bicycle or scooter is not a dependable default for every visitor: registration, payment, availability and legal requirements vary by vehicle and operator. Plan a walking-and-car alternative, especially with children, unfamiliar traffic or large bags.

Plan your Chaoshan visit with VeroTrip

Send VeroTrip your travel details: dates, arrival and departure bookings, party size, children’s ages, number of bags, preferred hotel standard, walking limits and dietary or prayer needs. Tell us whether the priority is Chaozhou heritage, Shantou food and old streets, or Nan’ao’s coast.

Those details let us help shape the route and identify the arrangements your enquiry needs. Ask for the exact hotels, vehicle and luggage capacity, driver or guide language, ticket responsibilities and meal arrangements in any proposed quote. This itinerary is a planning guide; individual admissions, food stops and an island extension depend on the arrangements you choose. If Beijing is another stop on the same journey, our Beijing food and prayer guide addresses its different local requirements.
