To rent a car in Xishuangbanna, use Jinghong as a clear starting base and choose the direction of each outing. Menglun’s botanical garden, Nannuo’s tea setting and a selected Dai village visit belong to different local plans. Choose one main direction for each touring day
Give the botanical garden its own day from Jinghong if plants, shade and time outside matter to you. Select a manageable visitor zone and include the whole outward and return journey. Do not promise both garden areas, every internal route and a second distant attraction. The private car reaches the permitted arrival area; admission, internal transport, a boat or specialist interpretation are separate services to confirm.

Pickup, hotel access and the local road plan
Nannuo Mountain is a different tea-focused outing. Choose a confirmed producer or a permitted village and forest walk rather than a list of unarranged household visits. A host’s willingness to receive you, the language and the actual tasting or demonstration need separate agreement. A three-day tea itinerary and a short return day offer different amounts of visiting time even when their maps share a mountain name.
For two days, keep a Jinghong night between the tea-mountain day and a selected Dai cultural day. Put the precise village or visitor venue in the written programme and agree access with any host. A performance, water activity, workshop or meal in a home should not appear as an automatic part of “Dai culture.” Respect working homes, clothing expectations and requests about photographs.
Jinghong’s airport, railway station, riverfront hotels and outlying properties have different approaches. Send the full Chinese hotel name, map pin and arrival details. Ask where the vehicle may stop and how bags reach the room. An airport collection and a garden touring day are separate service blocks unless your written plan explicitly combines them with a realistic arrival window.
Self-drive rental: branch acceptance and return
Driving yourself requires appropriate Chinese driving authorisation; confirm the current local procedure before booking.
For self-drive, confirm the actual staffed branch, vehicle transmission, payment security and named drivers before pickup. Inspect bodywork and tyres in good light and ask how assistance, damage reporting and later charges work. With an electric vehicle, practise a charging payment and identify the final return-charge option. Advertised range is not a promise for your passengers, air conditioning, roads and weather.
Keep walks and loading practical in tropical heat and rain. Leave time for water, a seated meal and a shaded break instead of filling the day with extra road mileage. Wildlife sightings and performances are not guaranteed by a car booking. Do not stop to approach wild animals or use an unverified forest track. National-border excursions are outside this local collection; a rental agreement and a domestic tour do not grant an international crossing.
A Jinghong pickup does not establish a one-way return in Lancang, Pu’er or another town. If adding Jingmai Mountain, compare a dedicated transfer and mountain stay with the rental company’s exact one-way terms. Those are longer approach roads and different overnight bases, not an extra stop after the botanical garden.
Ask the rental branch about the original passport and driving documents it accepts, permitted drivers, security payment, protection, excess and exclusions. Request the fuel or charge rule, mileage allowance, return inspection and later toll or traffic-charge process. Record the vehicle condition at both handovers. A card hold, damage protection and insurance are different matters; ask what each actually covers.
