Overview

Quick Answer

6 days from Chengdu back to Chengdu. Self-carried camping through Genyen’s southern valleys.

Carry your own camping system through the Genyen pasture and southern lake country on a route locally described as the outer circuit. The itinerary passes Rizhao Jinshan and Hangda before crossing Black Lake Pass to Luolongba and Niangka Lake. Three camp nights create a sustained mountain journey between village stays. verotrip describes the named route clearly, rather than implying that this itinerary circles the entire Genyen massif.

Why Choose This Journey

Daily Itinerary

Leave Chengdu early for the long overland journey via Kangding, Yajiang and Litang to Genyen Town. Expect a full day in the vehicle, with the scenery becoming more open as the road climbs onto the plateau. Settle into the confirmed local accommodation and prepare for the walk-in. This rapid approach requires suitable acclimatization before the core programme begins.

Overnight: Genyen Town guesthouse
Today’s pace: Approximately 650 km; a very long road day

Transfer to the trailhead near Ranrika and walk toward the small lake known as Genyen Heart. Continue across Yingge pasture and the open slopes toward the Xiaoza valley. The camp offers a mountain-facing setting, although sunset colour depends on the weather. Arrive with time to organize equipment and settle in; this is a high camp with simple facilities rather than a resort stay.

Overnight: Rizhao Jinshan camp
Today’s pace: Approximately 18 km; sustained high-altitude walking

Visit the accessible part of Lenggu Monastery in accordance with local practice, then begin the walk through forest and open pasture toward Hangda. The southern face of the Genyen massif comes into view when the weather clears. Follow established paths through grazing land and leave space for local herders and livestock. Settle into camp with time for a quiet evening beneath the mountains.

Overnight: Hangda camp
Today’s pace: Approximately 11–15 km; starting point dependent

Leave Hangda for the high lake country above the southern slopes. Pass through the Black Lake area and cross the pass before continuing via Luoren Lake toward Luolongba. The mix of altitude, uneven ground and a high overnight camp makes this a demanding stage. Keep the party together and allow enough daylight for the descent and camp setup.

Overnight: Luolongba camp
Today’s pace: Approximately 18 km; around 8 hours; pass around 4,850 m

Climb toward Niangka Lake for views of the mountain basin, then descend through the Reti valley. Stay with the guide on the agreed path, allowing enough time to reach the road pickup after the lake visit. Transfer back to Genyen Town, where a guesthouse night provides space to dry equipment and reorganize the pack before the long journey to Chengdu.

Overnight: Genyen Town guesthouse
Today’s pace: Approximately 13 km; around 6 hours plus transfer

Depart early from Genyen Town and travel through Litang, Yajiang and Kangding toward Chengdu. After several days in the mountains, this final stage is primarily transport. Road conditions can extend the drive well into the evening, so keep your arrival plans flexible and avoid a same-day flight or train. A Chengdu hotel night can be added to your quotation.

Overnight: Not included; Chengdu night recommended
Today’s pace: Full-day road transfer, often 10–11 hours
