Travel across northern Xinjiang using a route built around the S21 Desert Highway, the Altay region, Hemu and Kanas, then continue through Sayram Lake and Ili. The eleven-day programme includes a Duku Highway crossing when its seasonal operating conditions permit.

A named scenic highway is not a year-round guarantee. The final itinerary must identify the available Duku and Ahe road sections and the alternative route if access is restricted. Expect long driving stages, and confirm the last return to Urumqi before booking a tightly timed onward flight.

Daily Itinerary
Arrive in Urumqi and transfer to the hotel for the start of the scenic-highway circuit. Confirm the group's meeting time and luggage arrangements, with daily essentials accessible during the long vehicle sections. Keep the first evening free to rest rather than using it for a distant attraction before tomorrow's northbound drive.
Travel toward Altay using the S21 Desert Highway section specified for the departure. View the changing desert and northern landscape from the vehicle, stopping only at designated places that fit the journey. This is a substantial road day: rest stops, meals and the overnight arrival take priority over unscheduled detours.
Follow the Altay and Ahe Highway section selected for current road conditions, with the approach toward Hemu built into the plan. Use permitted stopping areas for mountain and valley views. The road is a transport route as well as a scenic experience, so weather, access controls and the destination arrival determine the number and length of stops.
Spend time in Hemu after coordinating local visitor transport and luggage access. Walk the open village lanes and suitable valley paths, allowing pauses for the landscape and everyday setting. Longer viewpoints depend on the group's pace and conditions; homes and working areas remain private unless a visit has been agreed with residents.
Travel to the Kanas Lake area and follow the scenic transport circuit included in the tour. Choose a manageable sequence of lake or river viewpoints with enough time for walking and transfers between them. Keep any optional boat or additional hill visit separate from the core programme unless it is confirmed in the booking.
Leave the Kanas area for Kuitun after completing the local scenic transport connection. The distance makes this primarily a travel day, with meals and rest stops built into the schedule. Do not assume that every attraction passed along the road is a visit; the group must preserve time for reaching its overnight accommodation.
Continue from Kuitun to Sayram Lake and begin the agreed lakeshore circuit. Short walks and selected viewing stops provide a change from the vehicle days, while wind and temperature determine the length of outdoor blocks. The guide sets the final stop according to the location and access of the night's accommodation.
Use the remaining Sayram Lake visiting window before travelling to Yining. Allow time for the road connection and a comfortable hotel arrival in the Ili valley. Any city walk is fitted around that arrival, and a named cultural activity or specialist meal is included only when it appears in the final programme.
Travel through the Ili valley to Nalati and explore the grassland route confirmed for the group. Use the operating scenic transport and selected walking stops rather than trying to cover every circuit. This day also positions the group for the possible Duku Highway section, so the overnight location and next day's road plan must be settled together.
Use the planned Duku Highway crossing only when the relevant section is open and suitable for the group's vehicle. The final route must identify the section, the overnight base and an alternative road connection if access changes. Allow for slow mountain-road travel and permitted rest stops; a closure cannot be solved by promising the same sightseeing on an unconfirmed shortcut.
Return to Urumqi from the final overnight base and complete the booked departure transfer. Choose the onward ticket only after the road or other transport connection and a dependable check-in margin have been established. If conditions or the selected route make a same-day departure unreliable, add a Urumqi night or revise the connection before confirming the tour.
