5-Day Xi’an, Datong & Beijing Heritage Route
Overview
Connect Xi’an, Datong and Beijing in five carefully paced days, using rail where a suitable date-specific service exists. The route gives the Terracotta Warriors and Yungang Grottoes clear priorities, with the final capital stay kept light. It is a compact multi-city journey, not a promise to see every major Beijing landmark as well.

What makes this route work
Plan one night in Xi’an, two in Datong and one in Beijing between touring days. The Xi’an-to-Datong connection can consume much of a day and may require a transfer; verify it before retaining a same-day museum visit. If that connection does not leave a workable itinerary, add a day or change the route instead of inventing a convenient train.

Choose the pace and optional elements
A rushed Great Wall visit before a flight is not the default final day. Make it an extension when you have an additional Beijing night or a sufficiently late, independently buffered departure. This version uses the final morning for a manageable local visit or departure arrangements.
Meeting, meals and the service agreement
| Item | Planning basis |
|---|---|
| Start and finish | Xi’an → Beijing. The written plan names the actual meeting and final drop-off points. |
| Duration and nights | 5 Days. 4 hotel nights between the touring days; accommodation is included only when specified in the confirmation. |
| Meals and dietary requirements | Meal stops follow the route. The restaurant, dietary standard and any included meal are specified separately; photographs do not establish a kitchen’s preparation practices. |
| Guiding and transport | Guide language, vehicle or shared arrangement, intercity tickets, internal shuttles and admissions are identified individually in the dated proposal. |
Use this as a route for a date-specific proposal. Tell us your dates, party size, luggage, walking needs and food requirements before services are selected. Only the services specified in the written confirmation form part of the arrangement. Personal travel insurance, immigration requirements and independent travel to or from the route need their own arrangements.

Daily Itinerary
Xi’an arrival/hotel → selected city landmark → Hui lanes
Begin from the arrival time you actually have. Choose one city landmark, such as a short wall section or the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda area, then leave room for a meal and a brief Hui-lane walk. A late arrival means a hotel evening instead. Confirm the next day’s train connection and museum reservation before finalising how much sightseeing can fit.
Stay: Xi’an. Meals: as specified in the dated itinerary; a meal stop in this outline is not an automatic meal inclusion.
Xi’an → Terracotta Warriors if time permits → booked rail connection → Datong
The intercity connection controls this day. Visit the Terracotta Warriors only when its reserved entry and both road transfers leave sufficient station time. Otherwise move the museum to an added Xi’an day before departure. Travel to Datong by the confirmed service or connection and continue to the hotel. This is not sold on the assumption that a short direct daytime train will always be available.
Stay: Datong. Meals: as specified in the dated itinerary; a meal stop in this outline is not an automatic meal inclusion.
Datong → Yungang Grottoes → optional Hanging Temple area → Datong
Make Yungang the main cultural visit, using the currently open cave route and a manageable pace. The Hanging Temple area is a separate road excursion; retain it only if the day and party’s walking ability suit it. Ground-level viewing can be preferable to the narrow upper structures. Return to the same Datong base so luggage need not be handled during sightseeing.
Stay: Datong. Meals: as specified in the dated itinerary; a meal stop in this outline is not an automatic meal inclusion.
Datong old city → rail station → Beijing hotel
Choose a short old-city or Huayan Temple visit when the train time leaves room. Collect the luggage and travel to Beijing on the reserved service. Allow time for station procedures and the hotel transfer. Keep the evening local rather than planning a second full sightseeing day after the train.
Stay: Beijing. Meals: as specified in the dated itinerary; a meal stop in this outline is not an automatic meal inclusion.
Beijing hotel → optional local cultural stop → departure point
Use the final morning according to the actual onward journey. A local walk or one appropriately reserved sight may fit; an early departure needs a direct terminal transfer. Mutianyu and a fuller Beijing programme are additions requiring more time, not automatic inclusions. Finish with luggage collected and a separate allowance for the airport or railway station.
Stay: No final hotel night assumed. Meals: as specified in the dated itinerary; a meal stop in this outline is not an automatic meal inclusion.
