Overview

Explore Datong over two sightseeing days, giving Yungang Grottoes its own main block before a separate trip towards the Hanging Temple and Yingxian Wooden Pagoda. This tour starts and finishes in Datong. Travel from Xi’an is an additional connection to arrange before the first touring morning, rather than an included short transfer within Xi’an.

Your route at a glance

Part Plan Overnight
1 Datong → Yungang Grottoes → Huayan Temple/old city → hotel Datong
2 Datong → Hanging Temple area → Yingxian Wooden Pagoda → Datong No final hotel night assumed

What makes this route work

Stay one night in Datong between the touring days, with any arrival-night accommodation arranged separately. Divide the plan between Yungang and the old city on one day, and the road excursion on the other. Temple interiors, upper walkways and tower access follow the current site rules, so exterior or courtyard viewing may be the appropriate visit.

Choose the pace and optional elements

The Hanging Temple’s steps and narrow upper structures will not suit every traveller. A ground-level view and a shorter road day are valid alternatives. Do not assume that the Wooden Pagoda can be climbed or that a closed cave at Yungang will open for a private party.

Meeting, meals and the service agreement

Daily Itinerary

Datong → Yungang Grottoes → Huayan Temple/old city → hotel

Begin from a Datong hotel or an arrival that leaves a genuinely usable morning. Visit the currently open visitor route at Yungang, allowing time to look closely at the sculptures instead of covering every cave. Return to the old city for lunch and a selected Huayan Temple or Nine-Dragon Screen stop. Keep the evening free for a short local walk and rest. The intercity journey from Xi’an should already be complete before this sightseeing day starts.

Stay: Datong. Meals: as specified in the dated itinerary; a meal stop in this outline is not an automatic meal inclusion.

Datong → Hanging Temple area → Yingxian Wooden Pagoda → Datong

Make the road excursion towards the Hanging Temple, choosing the current visitor option suited to your mobility. High-level access is a separate capacity-limited decision, not a guaranteed part of the title. Continue to the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda for the permitted viewing areas without assuming an ascent. Return to Datong or finish at a separately agreed onward point, keeping enough time for the road journey and any final station transfer.

Stay: No final hotel night assumed. Meals: as specified in the dated itinerary; a meal stop in this outline is not an automatic meal inclusion.
