Choose a Yangtze River cruise by direction, ship, cabin and the complete transfer at each end. The classic Three Gorges journey links Chongqing and the Yichang region, with several nights aboard. It is a different experience from a short Chongqing city cruise or a visit to the First Bend of the Yangtze in Yunnan.

Start with the number of nights you can give the river, then compare actual sailings. A broad label such as luxury cruise does not tell you the cabin size, meals, shore excursions, language arrangements or final disembarkation transfer.
Downstream or upstream?
Victoria Cruise Lines lists the common direction choices as four days from Chongqing to Yichang and five days in the reverse direction; its upstream itinerary specifies four nights. These are useful planning patterns, while your chosen ship’s written itinerary remains the authority for its actual dates and nights.
| Direction | Common planning pattern | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Chongqing to Yichang | Four days and three ship nights | Boarding evening and final transfer |
| Yichang to Chongqing | Five days and four ship nights | The Yichang meeting point and Maoping transfer |
| Round trip or longer route | A different cruise product | Do not assume the classic one-way schedule |
| Short city cruise | An evening or brief river experience | It does not replace a multi-night Three Gorges voyage |
Choose the direction that supports the wider journey rather than assuming one is always superior. The extra upstream night can suit a slower schedule; downstream may fit a shorter route. Check the actual sightseeing and arrival arrangements, including whether the relevant gorge viewing occurs in daylight.
A four-day cruise is not four full days of sightseeing
A typical downstream plan counts the embarkation evening as day one and the disembarkation and transfer as the final day. Protect those edges. Arriving in the boarding city the previous day can be a useful buffer, especially after an international flight or a long rail journey.
During the cruise, divide your time between the deck, shared spaces and the excursions you actually want. You do not have to join every optional outing to enjoy the river. Leave enough rest for early starts and the physical effort of shore visits.
At the end, calculate the journey from the actual disembarkation point to the city or station. A ship arriving in the Yichang region may use Maoping with a road transfer. Do not select an onward train using the ship’s arrival time alone.
| Stage | Confirm in writing | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Before boarding | Exact ship, pier, check-in window and meeting point | Piers and transfer plans can change |
| First evening | Dinner arrangements and briefing | A boarding night may not include dinner |
| During the voyage | Included versus optional excursions | A headline fare may exclude land programmes |
| Disembarkation | Pier, dam visit if booked and final city transfer | The onward connection starts after these stages |
Cabins and the real cost
Compare cabin category, usable space, bed layout, deck and location near public areas. Ask whether a balcony is private and included in that category. A larger image of a suite should not be used to judge a standard cabin.
For three people or a family, request the actual extra-bed arrangement and the resulting space. Check single supplements, children’s terms and whether rooms can be adjacent or connected if needed. These are ship-specific details rather than features every river cruise shares.
Ask for the complete cost: cruise fare, excursions, service charge, transfers, beverages, optional entertainment and any upgraded dining or amenities. Victoria’s own conditions separate cruise fare and shore programmes, demonstrating why an offer’s headline price needs careful reading. An operator promotion is not automatically a Vero Trip offer.
Excursions, language and walking effort
Request the named included excursions and the current optional list for your sailing. A small-boat tributary visit, a temple with steps and a dam excursion make different demands. Ask about walking, boarding and alternatives for someone who stays aboard.
Confirm the language of briefings and shore interpretation on the actual departure. An English website does not establish that every activity is presented in English throughout. If a private guide is required on land, clarify how that fits the ship’s group arrangements and timing.
River and traffic conditions can change an itinerary. Victoria’s upstream conditions explicitly allow substitutions and caution that some gorge viewing may occur outside daylight. Choose the cruise for the whole experience rather than one supposedly guaranteed excursion or photograph.
Documents, luggage and terminal transfers
Use the exact passport name for the cruise booking and confirm which documents are required for the ship and any reserved land visit. Carry originals securely. Keep the ship contact, boarding details and transfer meeting point available offline.
Ask about steps, ramps and porterage between the vehicle, pier and ship. Water levels can alter the approach. A lift inside the vessel does not establish a step-free route from the street or access to every deck and excursion.
Pack a small bag for valuables and essentials while the main luggage is handled. Keep layers and a rain layer available for the deck and shore visits. Establish dietary requirements with the operator in advance and ask what can actually be accommodated.
A wider China route with a cruise segment
Our 15-day China route with pandas, Chongqing and a Yangtze cruise contains boarding on day ten, two further river days and an exit through the Yichang region on day thirteen. Use it as a broader route starting point; the exact ship, cabin, excursions and onward connection need a current written proposal.
Questions visitors often ask
Will the cruise ship pass through the ship lift?
Do not assume that. A dam visit, ship-lift experience and the vessel’s navigation arrangements are distinct. Check the specific product and any optional excursion.
Can I catch a train immediately after disembarking?
Allow for the final excursion if booked, road transfer, station procedures and a buffer. Obtain the confirmed city-arrival arrangement before choosing the train.
What should I send Vero Trip?
Share your route direction, dates, cabin needs, walking comfort and the journeys before and after the cruise. A useful proposal should specify the actual sailing and all material inclusions.
