Updated 22 October 2026

Plan Guilin and Yangshuo as connected but different bases: Guilin for the arrival and city stage, and Yangshuo for time among the river and countryside landscapes. For a first visit, four or five days is a useful starting point when the actual connections allow it. Choose one main river experience, then protect the hotel transfers, luggage arrangements and a flexible local day.

The most useful choice is not how many famous photographs you can collect. It is where you want to wake up, which river journey suits your group and how everyone reaches the next hotel or train. A quiet countryside stay can be a pleasure when meals and transport work; without those arrangements, the same location can feel isolated.

The opening image is an illustration of an imagined Guangxi countryside setting, not a photograph of a specific viewpoint or Vero Trip customers.

Choose Guilin, Yangshuo town, countryside or Xingping deliberately

Start with the arrival and departure, then compare hotel settings. You do not need a new hotel for each landscape. A night in Guilin followed by several nights in one Yangshuo base can keep the trip simpler, especially when a downstream cruise is a priority.

Base Consider it for Confirm before booking
Guilin city Arrival, a city visit and a practical start for a booked downstream cruise. Exact station or airport transfer, hotel entrance and road transfer to the booked pier.
Yangshuo town Dining and a town-based stay with arranged countryside outings. Room noise, exact vehicle access and the journey to the particular river activity.
Yulong River countryside More time in a rural setting and activities close to your actual hotel. Meals, luggage access, return transport and how far the property is from town.
Xingping A stay focused on its Li River setting and nearby plans. Station-to-hotel transport and the journey to Yangshuo town; the places are not interchangeable.

Ask for the actual Chinese address and vehicle entrance. A hotel listed under Yangshuo may be in town or in a countryside setting some distance away. Check where you will eat, whether the room is quiet, and how you return after dinner. A scenic balcony does not establish convenient evening transport.

Recent travellers described the trade-off clearly: one enjoyed staying near the countryside and a raft pier but found fewer nearby meal choices and a separate journey to West Street. Another needed to arrange transport in advance rather than depend on finding a ride at the moment of departure. Those are individual experiences, not a claim that all public transport is unavailable.

Choose a countryside base for the setting, then check meals, luggage access and the complete journey to your activities.

For children or older relatives, confirm room beds, stairs, the luggage walk and somewhere comfortable to rest. Check passport reception directly for the nationalities staying. The China family planning guide develops room arrangements, complete transfers and the daily rest pattern before you choose the region.

How many days do you need?

Count nights before sightseeing days. Three days and two nights usually leave one full day between arrival and departure; that is a short introduction, especially if the hotel changes. Four days and three nights can give two full local days. Five days and four nights can protect the river transfer and leave more time in the countryside.

Use extra time to slow down or add a distinct interest. If you want a separate hill viewpoint, tea activity or longer countryside walk, decide what it replaces or add a real day. A detailed five-day social itinerary is not proof that its pace, transport or weather will suit a different party.

Keep a distant extension outside the core plan until its transfers and nights are clear. A terrace region or another Guangxi city is not an effortless stop merely because it appears in the same province. The guide here keeps the Guilin–Yangshuo choices together, rather than turning every surrounding place into a compulsory detour.

Choose the river experience before the ticket

A Li River cruise, a shorter Li River raft and a Yulong River outing are different products. Ask for the river, route, boarding place, endpoint and craft. The phrase “bamboo raft” alone does not tell you the journey, passenger conditions or whether it returns to the start.

Experience What it gives you The practical decision
Downstream Li River cruise towards Yangshuo A substantial river journey that can link the two hotel bases. Correct boarding pier, vessel product, documents, luggage and disembarkation pickup.
A shorter Li River raft or boat route A selected river section with its own departure and endpoint. Exact pier pair, one-way or return, type of craft, eligibility and onward transfer.
Yulong River raft A separate countryside experience, with route-dependent weirs and duration. Chosen route, participant eligibility, document handling and return to the hotel.
A permitted riverside walk or countryside visit Landscape time without committing everyone to a water activity. Suitable path, access, conditions, turning point and vehicle pickup.

The Li River scenic area’s raft-route page lists particular pier pairs and distinguishes one-way routes from returns. Use that distinction before arranging a car. A booking for one river section does not create access to another section, and it is not the same as a downstream cruise from the Guilin side.

For any water activity, confirm who can participate, how boarding works, required safety equipment and the conditions for cancellation. Give the provider children’s ages and heights and any mobility needs. One photograph of a family on a raft does not establish that your selected route accepts the same passengers.

Use a downstream cruise as a planned transfer day

The scenic area’s downstream-cruise guidance describes a one-way journey ending in Yangshuo. It also separates the boat ticket from transport to the boarding port and any return road journey. Arrange the day from hotel to hotel rather than treating the river as a round trip by default.

Check the boarding port printed on the actual reservation: Mopanshan and Zhujiang are different places. Agree the hotel pickup with that port, the boarding deadline and the documents used for the booking. Compare the particular vessel product, seating and meal inclusions rather than assuming a star label answers everything.

Decide what happens to your suitcases. One recent traveller reported staff-assisted luggage storage aboard their boat, while official guidance says there is no pier luggage-storage service for this one-way journey. Those statements concern different things. Ask the booked operator about your bags on board and arrange the final collection; do not assume a storage service will let you leave luggage behind at the starting pier.

After disembarkation, confirm the exit, the walking distance with bags and the reachable vehicle meeting point. A recent account described delays finding a car near the pier. Do not turn that into a universal rule about a particular hotel doorway; agree the pickup for the current access arrangements.

Confirm passport booking through the actual channel

The scenic area’s 1 October 2026 ticket notice identifies the official WeChat service account, 漓江售票处, and says cruise bookings are made with real-name reservations. During that holiday it warned against arriving at the pier without a reservation and against unofficial promises of special tickets.

For your date, check the newest official notice and the actual available product. A holiday advance-sales window is not a permanent rule for every season, and an update time for remaining tickets is not necessarily the moment all new tickets are released. Confirm that the transaction succeeded before arranging a non-refundable transfer.

Foreign passport holders should ask the official channel how their document, contact number and payment will be handled. The scenic area publishes a foreign-visitor ticket service number, +86 19167711091. Use it to confirm the relevant booking and redemption process; do not enter an invented Chinese identity number or assume a domestic visitor’s self-service machine will read your passport.

Carry the original document used for the reservation and keep the confirmation available offline. If a provider arranges the tickets, ask what has actually been issued, which port and session it covers, and who assists if the document cannot be read by an automatic gate.

Choose a Yulong River route and its return together

The Yulong River operator’s site separates routes by pier. Its Xinglong route description is a return to the same pier, while the Jinlong Bridge route ends at Jiuxian. A shorter ride, a longer route and a return journey involve different time and pickup choices.

Ask about the current participant restrictions for the particular route, including age, height, health and mobility conditions. Operator pages for different products do not all describe the same craft or eligibility. Do not infer a universal child policy from an old multi-person leisure-raft page, or from a social recommendation for a two-person raft.

Two recent travellers reached different conclusions about their raft outing: one enjoyed a longer, quieter initial section, while another found a long sunny trip tiring. Neither experience creates a best route or time for everyone. Decide how much time your party actually wants on the water, and keep the rest of the day light.

Arrange the endpoint transfer before departure, especially if you arrive at a one-way route on independent transport. Keep valuables protected, follow the operator’s boarding and life-jacket instructions, and do not stand or move around for a photograph contrary to the staff’s instructions.

Keep a workable five-day sequence

The example below uses one Guilin night and three Yangshuo nights. It puts a booked cruise on a hotel-change day and keeps the final local day flexible. This is a planning framework, not a confirmed departure or a promise that a river product will operate.

Day Planning sequence Overnight
1 Arrive in Guilin, reach the hotel and take a modest city outing only if time allows. Guilin: night 1.
2 Transfer to the confirmed pier for a booked Li River cruise; meet the Yangshuo transfer and settle in. Yangshuo: night 1.
3 One suitable countryside priority, such as an eligible, operating Yulong River route, followed by rest. Yangshuo: night 2.
4 A flexible day: a separately arranged tea visit, another local interest or a weather alternative. Yangshuo: night 3.
5 Leave from the actual booked station or airport with a complete road transfer. Departure; no fifth night.

If your actual arrival makes a cruise the following morning rushed, add a Guilin night or use a road transfer on another day. If your departure airport or station requires an early start, consider changing the final overnight base. Protect the connection before adding a sunset viewpoint.

There is no need to book both a long cruise and a long raft outing to make the stay worthwhile. If one is your main interest, give it enough time and use the other day for a different experience. A slower countryside day can be the point of the trip.

Compare station and airport transfers door to door

Check the exact Chinese station name on every train search. Guilin, Guilin North, Guilin West and Yangshuo are distinct stations. Yangshuo station serves the Xingping area, rather than placing you directly in Yangshuo town or beside a chosen countryside hotel. A short train duration does not remove the road journey at either end.

Journey The distinction that matters What to arrange
Arrival by rail Guilin, Guilin North, Guilin West and Yangshuo are different stations. Match the dated train and Chinese station name to the actual hotel transfer.
Arrival at Liangjiang Airport Arriving in the Guilin region is not arriving at a Yangshuo hotel. Suitable onward transport, luggage space and a late-arrival plan.
Cruise day The boarding port is outside the hotel, and the downstream arrival is elsewhere. Both road transfers, bags, documents and an agreed final pickup.
Countryside outing A ride out does not establish a car will be available later. Return pickup or waiting, any parking costs and a way to finish early.

The scenic area’s transport page lists separate airport, station and pier connections, including services adjusted to arriving trains or passenger demand. Check the dated service before depending on it; do not convert a listed example into a guaranteed frequency for your arrival.

For a private transfer, give the actual hotel, party size, suitcases and child-restraint needs. Agree whether the vehicle waits during an activity or returns at a set time, and which costs change if you finish late. A taxi available in town is not proof that a car will be waiting at a rural viewpoint after dark.

Let rain change the activity, not just the clothes

One recent traveller completed a cruise in wet weather but decided against a raft outing because of cold and splashing. That is a useful alternative to insisting on every preplanned activity. Check the operator’s conditions and any navigation notice before travelling, and follow an official suspension even when the rain seems light at your hotel.

Make a practical replacement: a shorter permitted town walk, an agreed indoor-focused tea experience, a suitable indoor visit or a hotel rest. A cave, viewpoint or drive still needs its own current access assessment; being different from a boat does not automatically make it a suitable severe-weather alternative.

Keep cancellation and change terms with the booking. If water conditions alter the route, ask what is offered and what costs are refundable before accepting the substitute. Do not assume every river product changes or resumes together.

Choose countryside activities to fit your group

A walking or cycling day should specify the route, surfaces, traffic exposure and return. An e-bike recommended by a domestic traveller is not an automatic recommendation for an overseas visitor; check the vehicle category, local rules, suitable equipment and your ability before renting. A road transfer with a shorter walk may be the better choice.

For a tea interest, use the dedicated Yangshuo Qixianfeng tea-visit guide. Picking, processing and tasting are different activities; a landscape admission does not reserve an English-speaking host or return transport. Give the tea visit its own time rather than squeezing it between a long cruise and an essential train.

Plan meals and breaks as part of the countryside day. Explain halal preparation, allergies, vegetarian ingredients or a prayer break specifically. Rice noodles and fish dishes can contain broths, fats, sauces or cooking alcohol that matter to your party; a familiar dish name alone does not settle those requirements.

Request a plan around your actual dates

Send Vero Trip the arrival and departure services, preferred hotel setting, group size, nationalities, children’s ages, luggage, walking limits and food or prayer requirements. Say whether the main priority is a downstream cruise, a particular raft route, a tea experience or simply more countryside time.

Compare the published five-day Guilin and Yangshuo route with the Guilin destination collection. Request the actual hotel nights, road transfers, boat or raft product, admissions, guiding language, meals and change terms for your proposal. The right plan makes the river, the room and the next connection work together.
