The China–Laos railway can connect a Yunnan trip with Laos, but an international rail ticket is only one part of the journey. Confirm your exact boarding station, the booking channel for your departure country, passport and entry requirements, and the current border procedures. Avoid putting a non-refundable flight or an essential long-distance connection immediately after the train.

Choose an international service, not just a train toward the border
A train within China to Xishuangbanna or Mohan is not automatically a through ticket into Laos. Likewise, a domestic Laos ticket does not by itself include the international segment. Search your intended origin and destination together, then inspect the train number, date, stations and any ticket conditions.
Do not assume every international service begins at the same Kunming station. Read the issued ticket: Kunming (昆明) and Kunming South (昆明南) require different transfers. On arrival in Laos, the railway station may be outside the area where your hotel is located, so book the final road journey as a separate step.
Where to buy and what to check
China Railway’s international passenger instructions identify 12306 for departures from China and LCR Ticket for departures from Laos, alongside designated station windows. The published instructions require a valid passport and describe paper-ticket collection. Check the instructions displayed for your actual booking; do not assume the domestic Chinese e-ticket process applies unchanged.
| Before payment | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Passenger record | Passport spelling, number and validity for each traveller | Booking and travel documents must match. |
| Journey | Departure country, exact station, date and international segment | Similar city names do not create a through ticket. |
| Collection and boarding | Whether a paper ticket is required, collection location and reporting time | An online confirmation may not complete boarding preparation. |
| Changes | Current refund and change rules for this ticket | A domestic ticket rule may not apply to an international booking. |
Complete any identity verification before the date you hope to buy. Confirm the currently offered advance-booking window in the booking system; an itinerary can be planned before seats are released, but availability should not be described as confirmed until a ticket is issued.
Passport, entry permission and the return journey
A train seat does not establish permission to enter either country. Check official immigration or embassy guidance for your nationality, passport and direction of travel, including whether the specific land-border crossing accepts your intended permission. Do this before purchasing non-refundable travel.
If you leave China and intend to return, check that your Chinese entry arrangement covers the new entry. Do not treat a previous admission stamp as a guarantee of re-entry. Families should check each traveller’s documents individually, including children travelling without their own seat.
Keep travel documents accessible throughout the day. Have the destination hotel name, address and contact details offline, and follow the border staff’s directions about forms and inspection. Give yourself time to resolve a document question at the station rather than arriving at the last minute.
Pack for a day that includes border formalities
Choose luggage you can move yourself. Keep valuables, medication you are permitted to carry, water, a layer and essential documents in a small bag you can reach quickly. Ask railway staff how luggage is handled during the current border process and be ready to follow instructions with all your belongings.
Check international baggage and restricted-item conditions for the full route before departure. Food, plants, medicines, batteries and sporting equipment can raise separate transport or customs questions. Domestic train acceptance does not settle cross-border import rules; keep questionable purchases out of the trip until their acceptance is confirmed.
Build a route with breathing room
For a first cross-border journey, staying near the departure city the night before reduces dependence on an incoming flight or long road drive. On arrival, plan a hotel transfer and a simple evening. Treat the timetable as the scheduled service rather than a guarantee that every border or road connection will finish to the minute.
A rail itinerary should also allow time in the places you are crossing. If Yunnan is the main purpose, combine Kunming with an achievable number of overnight stops instead of adding distant destinations merely because a map shows a rail line. Our Yunnan rail itinerary planner covers the domestic route-planning decision separately.
Frequently asked questions
Can I board using only an app screenshot?
Do not assume so. Follow the collection and boarding instructions supplied with the international booking and carry the original passport used for it.
Does a ticket to Mohan include onward travel into Laos?
Only if the issued itinerary actually includes the international destination. A domestic ticket to a border-area station is a different purchase.
Can Vero Trip guarantee my visa or admission?
No. Entry decisions belong to the relevant authorities. We can discuss how a Yunnan itinerary fits around your confirmed travel arrangements through Plan My Trip; verify international tickets and entry permission with the responsible providers and authorities.
