Plan a first Beijing trip with realistic hotel nights, passport reservations, a Great Wall outing, airport transfers and practical choices for different walking needs.

Updated 22 October 2026

For a first trip to Beijing, start with five days and four nights if you want the Forbidden City, one Great Wall outing and time for the city itself. That usually creates three full sightseeing days when arrival and departure occupy the other two. Keep one central hotel, organise date-sensitive reservations first, and choose the Great Wall section and walking length before booking transport.

A shorter stay can still be rewarding when it has a clear priority. Beijing becomes tiring when every famous place is treated as a quick stop: security checks, large grounds, road journeys and the walk from a station all take part of the day. Plan around the visits you most want rather than trying to complete a landmark list.

Choose the length by full days, not the package name

Write your actual arrival and departure times beside the hotel nights. A late flight on day one and a morning train on day three leave one full day. Calling the stay a three-day Beijing holiday does not create three days for sightseeing.

Stay length Usable time if arrival and departure are travel days A sensible focus
3 days / 2 nights One full sightseeing day. Choose the imperial centre or a Great Wall outing; fitting both needs favourable transport times and a tighter plan.
5 days / 4 nights Three full sightseeing days. One imperial-centre day, one Great Wall outing and one city or garden day.
6 days / 5 nights Four full sightseeing days. Separate the Summer Palace from neighbourhood exploring, or keep a flexible day.

If the Forbidden City is essential, check its calendar against your stay before deciding which day belongs to the Great Wall. The Palace Museum normally closes on Mondays, with national-holiday exceptions and possible special closures. A flight schedule that leaves only a Monday in the city needs a different choice or a longer stay.

For a longer China journey, give Beijing its own realistic nights before adding Xi’an, Shanghai or Yunnan. Avoid placing an indispensable museum booking immediately after a long international arrival: a delayed flight should not undo the one visit you travelled for.

Choose a hotel for access, rest and the final approach

Compare a small number of central areas against your actual activities. Staying near a useful metro station can help, but the correct exit and the final walk matter as much as the district name. Save the hotel’s Chinese name, full address and telephone number before arrival.

Area to compare Why it can work Check before booking
Wangfujing / Dongsi and the eastern central area A central base for an imperial-city day and separate neighbourhood outings. Actual station exit, street crossing, room access and taxi stopping point; central does not mean every landmark is walkable.
Qianmen and the southern central area A base with old-city streets and access towards the Temple of Heaven area. Pedestrian-lane vehicle access and your luggage walk; do not assume a car can reach a courtyard doorway.
A hutong guesthouse around the northern old city Neighbourhood atmosphere when it is an important part of the stay. Stairs, sound insulation, private bathroom, heating or cooling and the final approach with bags.
An airport or railway-station hotel A practical choice for a particular early departure or late arrival. The correct terminal or station and actual transfer; the transport hub’s name is not a central sightseeing address.

Ask the property to confirm reception for your passport, bed arrangements, lift access and the room features you need. For a courtyard stay, request a clear description of the approach from the vehicle stop. A charming lane can be awkward with a pushchair, several suitcases or a traveller who cannot manage steps.

Keep the same hotel for the core city stay unless a particular departure makes a change worthwhile. Moving rooms to save a small amount of sightseeing travel can consume the afternoon you hoped to gain. An airport hotel is useful for an airport problem; it should not accidentally become the base for every central-city outing.

Make Palace Museum booking the first date decision

The Forbidden City is the historic palace complex; the Palace Museum is the institution whose admission you need. Use the Palace Museum’s official English visitor information and its booking link. The museum states that same-day tickets are not sold. Enter passport details carefully and keep the booking confirmation with the original document used.

Check the current release window, available date and session before paying for another service built around that visit. A third party’s promise to “sort it out on arrival” is not a museum admission. If booking through a provider, ask for the actual date, visitor details and confirmation rather than relying on a general itinerary description.

The city’s guidance for overseas visitors directs passport holders to the official English booking channel and the staffed document-checking channel at the Meridian Gate, the south entrance. Plan your approach to that entrance and a separate pickup after the visit; do not expect to walk back out through the entrance to meet a waiting car.

For a child, use the admission category that actually applies to the child’s document and age. Do not assume a free-admission statement intended for a particular identity category applies to every overseas passport. If the form cannot accept your details, ask the official service channel before making a second, inconsistent reservation.

Arrange Tiananmen Square separately

The square, the Palace Museum and neighbouring institutions have their own arrangements. A palace ticket is not a blanket reservation for everything around Tiananmen. Use the current official process for the square if you want to visit it, and allow time for the instructed approach and security checks.

A Beijing municipal FAQ for international visitors explains passport booking and assistance when a non-Chinese phone number cannot use the website. It also describes limited arrangements attached to specified neighbouring reservations; these should not be expanded into a rule that any nearby attraction ticket grants access.

Flag raising is a separate timing and access decision. Decide whether that very early start matters enough to change the rest of your day, then check the relevant reservation requirements. A social post saying someone entered without a reservation is not a dependable method for your visit.

Give one Great Wall section a proper outing

Choose one section for the day. Mutianyu is in Huairou, while Badaling is in Yanqing; they are different journeys with separate ticket and transport arrangements. Choose according to your party’s walking comfort, preferred access and the actual service proposal, rather than combining two famous names in one rushed day.

The city’s Mutianyu visitor introduction describes cable-car access as well as public transport involving a change in Huairou. For an independent trip, check the actual departure, interchange and return arrangement for your date. A route description does not promise a direct city-centre bus at the time you want.

Lift access and the walk along the wall are separate choices. Choose a section and turning point that suit the whole party.

A lift can reduce the climb to the wall without making the wall flat. Ask where it arrives, which section you intend to walk, where the steep steps begin and how you return. Do not choose the farthest tower simply because a photograph looks attractive. A short visit with time to sit and enjoy the view may be a better fit for children or a mixed-mobility party.

Confirm whether admission, the scenic shuttle, a particular cable car or another descent option are included. They are distinct items. Ask what happens if wind, weather or an operational change affects the chosen equipment. Stay within the currently open visitor area and follow staff directions.

Use a five-day framework without filling every gap

This example uses four nights in the same city hotel. Put the Palace Museum on an available opening date and move the other full days around it. Day four is deliberately a choice: the Summer Palace deserves its own time, and is not an automatic extra after several central-city attractions.

Day Main plan Overnight or departure
1 Arrive, reach the hotel and take a short local walk only if comfortable. Beijing, night 1.
2 An imperial-centre visit built around the actual Palace Museum booking; arrange the square separately if desired. Same hotel, night 2.
3 One Great Wall section, with the access option and walking length chosen for the party. Same hotel, night 3.
4 Choose the Summer Palace and a modest evening, or a city day with Temple of Heaven and one neighbourhood. Same hotel, night 4.
5 Depart; add a short visit only if the confirmed transport schedule leaves enough time. No fifth hotel night.

The published five-day Beijing heritage, hutong and Great Wall tour offers a different outline, including Summer Palace and hutong visits on one day and a Temple of Heaven visit before departure. Compare it against your flight time and preferred pace. The written quotation determines hotels, guiding, transport and included admissions.

With an extra night, use the additional full day for the visit you otherwise have to remove, or keep room for weather and rest. Another night should create a more comfortable holiday rather than simply adding several more distant stops.

Group the city by areas and energy

For an imperial-centre day, allow the palace visit to be the main event. For a neighbourhood day, select one hutong area and explore slowly rather than using several taxi journeys to collect street names. Respect residents’ doorways and do not enter a courtyard simply because the gate is open.

The Summer Palace is a separate northwest-city outing. Decide whether you want a garden walk, buildings and cultural interpretation, or a longer day around the grounds. Seasonal facilities and individual exhibitions can differ from general park access; check the specific item before including it in the plan.

At the Temple of Heaven, distinguish the park grounds from access to the principal historic buildings and any combined ticket. This matters when comparing a short park visit with a fuller sightseeing stop. Leave space for meals, toilets and the walk back to transport, rather than planning only the time spent beside the most recognisable building.

Check the airport, station and payment method

Beijing Capital Airport, PEK, and Beijing Daxing Airport, PKX, are different gateways. Send the actual flight number, date and terminal with a transfer enquiry. For a train, use the full station name shown on the ticket; “Beijing station” in a message is not enough to arrange a pickup for another station across the city.

Keep arrival arrangements simple if you have young children, bulky luggage or a late landing. Compare the full door-to-door journey: terminal walking, transfers, stairs or lifts, the final hotel approach and the time public services operate. Obtain a current transfer estimate for the actual address rather than treating a generic airport-to-city time as a guarantee.

A February 2026 Beijing transport FAQ describes overseas Visa and Mastercard support for subway ticket machines and direct gate payment. Check your card or device’s compatibility, and keep a staffed ticket-purchase option if a transaction fails. That transport arrangement does not establish acceptance by every shop or restaurant.

Plan meals, rest and walking needs in advance

For each major outing, agree when you will eat and where a seated break fits. Bring manageable day bags and check the venue’s rules for storage and prohibited items. Do not arrive at a large security-controlled attraction carrying suitcases unless the operator has confirmed a suitable storage arrangement.

Describe mobility in practical terms: comfortable walking distance, ability to use steps, standing tolerance and whether a pushchair or wheelchair is involved. A route called “easy” online may still include climbing or an out-and-back return. Recent Beijing walking comments included exactly that mismatch; ask about the complete route, not only the attractive middle section.

For Muslim travellers, use the separate Beijing food and prayer guide for those decisions. Confirm the actual restaurant, meal requirements and room or prayer arrangements. A district’s reputation or the presence of a mosque does not establish the suitability of every meal in the itinerary.

Keep alternatives for weather and unavailable tickets

Autumn photographs can help you choose a setting, but fixed peak-colour dates and claims of empty paths are unreliable. Wind and rain can change the scene, and a very early photograph does not establish a venue’s opening time. Choose one park you would enjoy without peak leaves rather than travelling across the city to chase every predicted colour window.

What changes Useful response What to confirm
Palace Museum tickets unavailable or closure announced Move to another available date, or choose a different open museum or city walk. A substitute museum may also require booking; a park view is not entry to the palace collection.
Rain or strong wind on the Great Wall day Reassess with the operator and move the outing if possible; choose an available indoor visit. The selected section’s opening, lift operations and ticket or vehicle change terms.
A child or older traveller tires sooner Shorten the route, use agreed rest stops or return to the hotel. Exit, pickup point, toilets, seating and whether the party can split safely.
Autumn colour differs from social photographs Enjoy one park or neighbourhood for its wider setting. Dated local reports; a predicted peak week does not guarantee colour or quiet.
A phone number is rejected by a booking form Use that venue’s official international or staffed assistance channel. Passport details, booking confirmation and availability; a workaround for one venue may not apply elsewhere.

Before paying, ask which bookings can move, which costs are fixed and how a change is agreed. An indoor substitute needs its own availability check. A plan that contains a realistic alternative is more useful than a promise that every headline attraction will work on the first attempt.

Send the details that make a Beijing proposal workable

Send Vero Trip your dates, flight or train details, nationalities, party size and children’s ages. Include your two or three essential visits, walking needs, luggage, preferred hotel style, room configuration and food or prayer requirements. Say whether you prefer independent city transport, private guiding or arranged transfers for particular outings.

Use the Beijing route collection to compare published outlines, then request a proposal that names hotel nights, daily transport and guiding, admissions and any lift tickets. Check how reservation availability affects the sequence before confirming. The result should be a holiday that works for your dates and your party.
