To rent a car in Dali, decide first whether you want a private driver for selected outings or a self-drive rental for a wider journey. Your hotel base is the next decision: Xiaguan, Dali Old Town and the different Erhai shores do not share one convenient pickup point. Choose two or three meaningful stops, then arrange the vehicle around them.

AI-generated fictional car-hire planning scene; the people, vehicle and location are illustrative, not a confirmed fleet, real clients or an exact named attraction.

Choose the side of the lake before choosing the car

A car earns its place when your day includes dispersed villages, a hotel change or luggage that makes several transfers awkward. It earns less when the whole programme is an old-town walk. Three Pagodas and a selected old-town area make one focused cultural day. Xizhou and Zhoucheng make a different village and craft plan. Combining all of them with a complete Erhai circuit usually trades away the time you wanted at each stop.

Choose a Dali car plan
Plan Route shape Time to protect
One local day Dali base → Three Pagodas → selected Old Town walk → same base No hotel night; legal road access and walking remain separate.
Two local days Xizhou day / Dali night / Zhoucheng day One Dali night; craft hosting is separately agreed.
A change of hotel Actual west- or east-shore property → agreed stops → new hotel Declare bags and avoid treating the whole lake as one pickup area.

Pickup, hotel access and the local road plan

Use the actual Dali railway station or Dali Fengyi Airport shown on your ticket when requesting collection. Send the hotel’s Chinese name, address and the side of Erhai where it stands. If your hotel is in a pedestrian lane, obtain a legal loading point and the remaining walk. Ask who will help with large bags; a private car booking does not mean the vehicle can stop outside every courtyard room.

An Erhai road journey and a visit to the managed ecological corridor are different things. Plan to park or be dropped at a permitted access point, then walk or use an authorised local option. Do not arrange a car to drive along paths reserved for other uses. If one traveler cycles while another prefers a short walk, agree the reunion point and time before separating; the driver cannot necessarily follow beside the water.

For self-drive, ask the actual staffed branch to accept your driving documents, overseas payment method and named additional drivers. Establish whether collection is in Xiaguan, near the railway station or at another office. A convenient-looking Old Town listing can still involve a transfer. Photograph the car at handover and return, and leave time for the inspection rather than treating the rental return time as the departure time of your train.

Self-drive rental: branch acceptance and return

Driving yourself requires appropriate Chinese driving authorisation; confirm the current local procedure before booking.

If returning in Lijiang, specify the exact branch and obtain written acceptance of the one-way arrangement. Include its extra charge, permitted road area, fuel or charging rule and the final transfer to your hotel or station. Renting in Dali and leaving the key at a Lijiang hotel is not an agreed return. When the one-way terms do not suit, compare a private sightseeing transfer or a train with local cars at each end.

For a two-day village visit, keep one Dali overnight between the touring days. A tie-dye session needs a host appointment, and the time for rinsing, drying or collecting the piece matters. Reserve an ordinary meal break even if you want to sample village snacks. In rain, shorten field paths and exposed lake walking; request the effect of a route change on the vehicle booking before the day begins.

An automatic car can simplify the controls, but it does not solve old-town access, parking or an unfamiliar lakeside approach. If choosing an electric vehicle, practise the payment and charging process at handover and identify a practical return-charge stop. Do not plan a remote first driving stage immediately after arriving tired.

Ask the rental branch about the original passport and driving documents it accepts, permitted drivers, security payment, protection, excess and exclusions. Request the fuel or charge rule, mileage allowance, return inspection and later toll or traffic-charge process. Record the vehicle condition at both handovers. A card hold, damage protection and insurance are different matters; ask what each actually covers.

Compare the two arrangements
Question Private driver Self-drive rental
Who drives? An agreed professional driver provides the named road service. Each person who drives must be authorised and accepted by the rental agreement.
What do you arrange? Route, seats, luggage, waiting, contact, guide if chosen and final drop-off. Branch, documents, security, vehicle condition, parking, fuel/charging and return.
Where does it end? The hotel, station or airport actually included in the proposal. The exact return branch or other handover expressly accepted in the rental order.

Private-car booking checklist
Item Agree before confirming
Vehicle and time Passenger and bag capacity, child seats if required, pickup/finish, waiting, additional stops and overtime terms.
Driver and guiding Driver contact and communication plan; guiding language and accompaniment only when separately specified.
Transport costs Fuel, tolls, parking, driver overnight expenses where relevant, one-way and outlying-pickup supplements.
Visits and rooms Admission, scenic shuttles, host appointments, meals, hotel nights and room arrangements individually identified.
Changes Cancellation, weather/closure changes, delays and treatment of unused services in the accepted terms.

A private vehicle is not unlimited hours or unrestricted road access. Compare the complete arrangement for your party and date. Ask who operates the vehicle and what booking and insurance terms apply. Admission, meals, specialist guiding and hotel rooms are included only when your accepted proposal lists them.

Questions before you book

Can the driver take us onto the Erhai corridor?

Arrange the permitted road drop-off and the onward walking or authorised local transport. A private vehicle does not grant corridor access.

Is a complete lake circuit necessary?

No. Choose the shore and villages you actually want. A smaller area can leave more useful time outside the car.
